The Good, The Bad, The Coyote Ugly
Wrapping up Week 8.....
THE GOOD
*Edson Buddle's hat trick.
*Marcelo Gallardo's change of direction and well-placed goal.
*TFC Coach John Carver, on Columbus's tactics: "They've come to spoil the game. They've come to take their time. They've come to fall over and dive all over the park, and I think that's what they did. Any team to go six wins out of seven and have a game plan like that surprises me a little bit."
*Carver, on being lectured by the fourth official: "They want me to sit down in the dugout with me arms folded and me legs crossed and just be a nice little boy. Well, no ... I'm a passionate guy ... and if that is taken away from me, then it's not worth me being here and being a part of this. But I'm not going to let them win, that's for sure."
*Defender Jimmy Conrad's team-leading third goal, all off set pieces from Carlos Marinelli, for Kansas City, which has won only twice at New York in 17 tries.
*Dallas drawing more than 22,000 and all six weekend games attracting at least 13,000.
*Kheli Dube's first career goal, six minutes into his first start for New England.
*Chivas USA's first-ever victory over DCU and first-ever comeback victory.
*Toronto 2-0-2 at home with one goal allowed, and a five-game unbeaten streak heading into two meetings with D.C. United this week.
*Chivas winning despite the absence of nine injured players, including six defenders.
*Jorge Flores, who earned a roster spot during an open tryout last year, scoring his first career goal.
*David Beckham's cross to Buddle to complete the hat trick.
*Columbus's six-game unbeaten streak.
*Danleigh Borman's second goal in a week for New York and second amusing goal celebration in a week.
*Bobby Boswell's first goal since 2006 and Houston's second straight win after two losses and a tie.
*TFC captain Jim Brennan, on Michael Wilbon's condemnation of streamers being thrown during corner kicks: "I saw the PTI guy talking and all that, and he talks out of his ass anyways. You know it's part of the game. They do it all over the world and down there [United States] they complain because they watch their sports and they sit in the stands and really don't do much."
*Hollywood United, an amateur team led by TV star Anthony LaPaglia, qualifying for the U.S. Open Cup.
THE BAD
*DCU's six goals conceded in the final 15 minutes of games.
*San Jose shut out for the sixth time in eight matches. (Although James Riley put the ball into the net Saturday -- his own. And it was awful.)
*Dallas's atrocious defending on Buddle's first goal, in which he beat four passive defenders.
*Chicago just 2-2 at home while 3-0-1 on the road.
THE COYOTE UGLY
*Adrian Serioux's brutal sideline tackle (and red card) on Beckham, who waves bye-bye to the Dallas midfielder.
*DCU's late collapse.
*Riley's own goal.
*Red cards to New York's Dave Van Den Bergh and Coach Juan Carlos Osorio.
*Ricardo Clark's twice-deflected shot for Houston's first goal.
*Dallas Coach Steve Morrow: "It was an embarrassing performance. We're all ashamed of ourselves in the locker room and, ultimately, I'll take responsibility for that as a coach. But, obviously, we're going through a rough time at the moment."
