Just like the friendlies, Torres looks great...until the crucial moment.

Liverpool are beginning to take the game to Villa though.

1-0 Liverpool. Own goal. lol.

Torres is playing well. He's had some nice opportunities he should've buried but I'm impressed by him so far.

Its good that gerrard is being used in the centre. He's not bad on the right, but he's a much more neffective player when he plays in central midfield.

If you're a Liverpool fan, are you not a bit pissed off that your team has spent tens of millions of pounds this summer...and you've put out last year's side with Torres?
i think what annoys liverpool fans more is that they're always buying decent squad players instead of making big name signings. They signed torrres, but thats the only big name signing they made. All the other signings were avergae, they're no better than the players Liverpool already have.

Liverpool look impressive.

Still though, if I was a fan I'd be thinking "fuck the £30m we spent on Babel, Leiva, Banayoun and Heinze" (well, the money's clearly available for Heinze anyway) "why didn't we buy Mancini and Bent along with Torres?"

Then I think they could mount a real challenge.

Thats pretty much what I think. Why buy several average players instead of a couple of big names. People like babel and benayoun are not going to make Liverpool a much better team. they just add to the squad depth and Liverpool already had a big enough squad.

They can pick up players like Voronin on a free to add to the squad, I bet they could have had Distin if they really chased him.

Villa coming back into it. I'd say this game is a million times better than last season, but you can't multiply zero.

The incredibly creative Blackburn supporters have come up with a new chant. It's called "Santa Cruz is coming to town".

Look out for that piece of genius as the headline for every Blackburn match report in tomorrow's papers!

EDIT: McCarthy is ok apparently. I think we'll rest him for Thursday though, it's the UEFA Cup qualifier against MyPa. We shouldn't need him, we have Santa Cruz, Roberts, Derbyshire and Rigters.

Yeah I'm still scratching my head with that one, we was linked with Mancini and Queresma.

MANCINI AND QUERESMA

First 10 minutes of the second half, Villa are the better side, particularly through Young. If it stays at 0-1, I can see Harewood coming on for the last 15 minutes and causing problems.

Torres' link up play is great, if only he had a finisher around him.

If I was O'Neill I'd send on Harewood for Petrov, go to a 4-4-2.

Well we've got 3 ideas for the formation now, but I'm probably right.

I thought it'd be Pennant going off for Babel, let's see if he can prove me wrong and do well down the wings.

If Liverpool had a good goalscorer then he would make a brilliant partnership with torres. I thought kuyt could step up his game and score more often, but from what ive seen from him today, I dont think it can happe. He works hard, but he's expected to score goals more often.

Get a haircut, Voronin!

Babel's made an impact, more than Pennant did. Though to be fair, Villa did change their system at the same time.
