Official Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess thread

I've been having a great time with this game so far except
right now I'm in the City in the Sky and the design sucks. Well maybe because all you get is a double claw shot and it really doesn't change it up too much from when you got the clawshot earlier in the game. Each dungeon you have had cool new uses for the special item you find. This one is just a small enhancement.

I dont know, it was my favorite item thus far. Using it made me a believer, it feels so cool.

A problem with a game of this scope is that theres so many elements introduced, and thus there are so many potentially cool thing the player can think of that could have been implemented- but then you realize its pretty much impossible to make full use of all the items in this game.

For example, how cool would
some minigames with the spinner be? Ie races, obstacle courses, etc. A shame such an incredible item is underused. Also the dominion rod- howbout some robo-wars type challenged, where you are able to control a statue and challenge someone elses statue in a ring? Another item with awesome potential, only used it custom circumstances

But again, with such a huge scope, its unrealistic to expect everything to be utilized to its potential. Even if they had an extra year, I doubt they would have run out of things to add.

Some people were saying this comes second to RE4 in terms of visuals. The graphics and animation here aren't even as good as Wind Waker (which looks exactly like a real cartoon). The Metroid Prime games are also ahead of this. The music is good, remember this is a game not a movie, midi makes the soundtrack interactive.

...
I was skeptical about the graphics at first, but after playing it, it really is above RE4 in everything, except perhaps, the models complexity. Lighting, textures, effects, are done much better in TP and with a much larger scope too.

Anyone have any tips for the GC version of rollgoal? It just seems.. impossible. Level1-7, specifically. It seems physically impossible to get enough of an angle and speed to clear that second half-pipe, then stop the ball on a dime. Has anyone cleared this, and how?!

It's simply a matter of tilting back just right, right after the ball clears the half-pipe. You have to put a decent amount of tilt back on the analog stick. It's not really hard with some practice. I cleared
level 8-8, the last level. It repeats the same 8 boards eight different times, but each new round gives you less time to finish. The final reward is not that great, so after you finish 1-8, you really don't need to play anymore if you don't find it fun. But I had a lot of fun with it
.

Yeah, I LOVED the seventh dungeon, largely because I thought the item was awesome. So much fun to use.

I just noticed the band in Castle Town. That's a nice little touch.

I just beat the eighth dungeon. I think I'll go finish up the game right now and do extras later (I still have 26 heart pieces, about a third of the bugs, half the poes, and some sidequests and minigames left).

Although I've understood most of the story, there are some things I'm still confused about. >_>
Why does Midna say that she wants to return her world back to normal? As far as I know, isn't it the same as it always was? How was it changed? Was it that combining Twilight and Light created "darkness"? If so, what is the difference between twilight, and actual darkness (in this game)? Why didn't the Twili in the Palace of Twilight attack Link? Also, was Zant's neck snapping just symbolism showing that Zant couldn't come back anymore as Ganandorf died? Or did Zant actually kill him somehow? If he did, how would he have done it? He was already dead. >_> It didn't seem like Zant had any power over Ganandorf... but at the same time, it seemed like Zant's neck snapping actually affected Ganandorf... if Zant's eyes just closed, it would be much less ambiguous.
And how did Midna get that first piece of fused shadow that ended up being her helmet?
Meh... it just seems like so many things weren't fully explained.

Just finished the fourth dungeon. I really liked the boss and it more than made up for the disappointing boss of the third dungeon.

I totally, easily rolled through dungeon 6 and loved it. After the dungeon, I especially loved the
Clint Eastwood spaghetti western inspired part when you had to eliminate the 20 thugs that had taken over the village
:lol

I just beat the game. I played through it slower than most people (60 hours), and I'm not even close to finished with the extras - I still have to get about a third of the bugs, 26 heart pieces, about half the poes, and a couple of other sidequests in minigames. I generally ride instead of warping, so I'm sure that added some time.

What I liked:
- Hyrule Field is huge, and very fun to just ride around shooting and slashing stuff. The best overworld in the series.
- The story has some issues, but is overall enjoyable.
- I love the hidden skills. Great fun to use.
- AMAZING art direction throughout the game.
- Amazing boss fights.
- Midna was a great character. I also liked a lot of the supporting cast (the yetis, the kids, Telma, Agitha, etc.)
- Plenty of great minigames. Fishing, canoe archery, the bird game, the STAR challenge, all fun.
- Even if they are easy, lots of cool enemies.
- The DUNGEONS. Definitely the best in the series.
- So many awesome cutscenes. My favorite was the one where we first saw Ganon.
- All major characters (
Ganon
, Link, Zelda, Zant, Midna) are very well-designed, and a lot of the minor ones are too.
- Carrying a dying Midna to Zelda is masterfully executed. A very emotional sequence, marred only by the stupid combat music.
- Castle Town feels very alive. I would have liked to be able to talk to more of the people, but it still does a great job of capturing the hustle and bustle of the city.

What I didn't like:
- I think the game was gorgeous overall, but there are a few areas where the textures hurt the look.
- Music isn't up to par with OoT or MM, though there are still some fantastic songs (Hyrule field, piano song, etc.) Not being orchestrated isn't a big deal to me, though.
- The story was overall enjoyable, largely thanks to Midna and the presentation. However, the pacing of the plot drops off in the middle (it moves steadily forward for the first few dungeons, then stops going anywhere for awhile, and doesn't pick back up again until the 8th.
- Horseback combat is so much fun, it's a pity it wasn't fleshed out more. Why have only three major sequences, and stop with orcs on boars? Why not have Lizalfos on Dodongos, Stalfos on undead horses, maybe even Darknuts on mammoth-sized beasts?
- Combat was generally too easy, though extremely fun thanks to the skills. I honestly think that enemies should have all had their damage doubled. Bosses in particular were noticeably easy, though the fights were spectacular. That said, I haven't finished the Cave of Ordeals (the 5-redead floor killed me).
- The story generally leaves too many loose ends open. Why were the kids kidnapped? What's with Zant snapping his neck? Ganon wasn't fully explained either
- Some items weren't used enough. Wouldn't a minigame built around the spinner have been awesome?
- Last two dungeons are overly short. The eighth has a nice atmosphere, but I don't think it's very much fun to go through. The ninth is fairly fun, though.
- The ending isn't up to par with OoT, MM, or WW. However, all those games have fantastic endings. Even a semi-weak Zelda ending is still a good ending by most games' standards.

I think that even with the extra year, the game still felt a bit rushed in a few areas. However, no game is perfect, and this comes a lot closer than most games of its scope. Even though I listed a lot of flaws, they don't really hurt my overall opinion of the game that much. It is one of my favorite games ever, and it is very rare that I'll say that about a game.

Zelda Good & Bad

Positives
1. Boss design is absolutely godlike. It's like a poetic metaphor sometimes. It is a beautiful example of art.
2. The Link missions were awesome. There needs to be more.
3. The end temple boss music fanfare is going to be eternally remembered.
4. The Wii Projectile Aiming is awesome!!!!!
5. The wolf mechanics are very strong, and it would be a shame if EAD threw them away. Too bad they couldn't be used in an independent game.

Negatives
1. Texture design is horrendous. It boggles the mind how these textures were even allowed as a 4th generation GameCube title, let alone a Wii game. At least Wii Sports shows me that EAD's Library Teams have updated their middleware to sport some nice resolution textures on the Wii. It is just a shame that Zelda does not benefit from this.
2. Audio production is weak. Some of the songs are very nice in quality and composition. Some of the songs are boring and technically unimpressive. Voice acting is needed. I know some of you nerds want to defend Zelda by saying it never had voice acting, or that voice acting can be horrible but every game on the NES and SNES did not have voice acting. Zelda should. I mean Kameo is a good game, but it destroys Zelda in the audio department for both voice and music.
3. The intro play session of the game is horrible. Akward and slow.
4. The Cinematics were gorgeous, but they didn't seem well-paced. I think the game does not do a good job at explaining why Link is even on this journey. I wish there were more.
5. I think Zelda should have dungeon crawler levels that are all action based, that is where EAD could make the action difficult. Perhaps keep the puzzle temples neutral in action difficulty.
6. NPC's and towns are pathetic in this game. Why can't there be other heroes and villains in the game. It is just Link, Zelda, Evil Villain, and a bunch of morons and chickens. Well the once exception is that circle of heroes in the tavern. They are pretty cool.
7. Rupees. It is shocking that EAD made such a mistake with the abundance of useless rupees. How about some cool treasure and items.

I know there may seem like more negatives, but it is just because i have such high aspectations of Nintendo, EAD, and the Zelda franchise. The game is brilliant, but you can taste what it could have been.

I agree with absolutely EVERYTHING you just said. The positives of this game are simply too numerous to list, which makes everything that wasn't as fantastic stand out all of the more. I even mentioned how cool a minigame built around that item would have been.

Again, with a game this massive, they could have kept adding things forever, and its unrealistic to expect everything to be as fleshed out as ideally as I would have liked.

Holy crap, the cave of ordeals gets harder the second time you try to beat it.

FOUR Iron Knuckles at the end.

I didnt even think about trying that,
is anything else changed? 4 iron knuckles is nothing really bad

Mike M said:
Do you get anything worthwhile for going through it the second time?

I don't believe so. I feel that when I do go through this game a second time, I'll feel a lot less "bogged down." I don't know how to explain it, but knowing that I already have a save file pretty damn near 100%
just need 22 more Poes
lets me feel that I can take my time, enjoy the atmosphere and game much more.

Was I the only one who loved the eigth dungeon? I found the atmosphere to be absolutely incredible, and really quite creepy, particularly
when the hand chases you to get the sol
. Made me panic. Sure, it was a bit small, but I wanted to fight
Zant
so bad that I was kind of glad the dungeon was quite small in size. Dungeon 9, though, they should have been bigger. When I walked into the room with the
Iron Knuckle just before Ganon's room
I was really quite surprised (and disappointed) that the end came so quickly. Though the events just before that were great, and the sharp change in the music really increased the nerves and anticipation.

Anyway, I recall Nintendo claiming that working on the Wii version allowed for improvements to be made to the Gamecube version as well. I wonder what these were? I for one as guessing RollGoal,
the Zelda energy ball fight
, and the
Panzer Dragoon sequences
.

Alkaliine said:

I'm still conflicted about this one. Like you said, the mood it sets out is really great, especially when
some of the twilight creatures take on their real form
, but gameplay-wise it's nothing special. The part with the
sols
was pretty haunting yes, especially with the threatening tune.

Since spoiler tags work again, my remark on the final dungeon:

Did anyone else think that the solution to some of the puzzles in the beginning of this "dungeon" were pretty well hidden? I was trying to get the map and it took me a long time to even notice the pile of leaves that was lying there, and the diagram to the solution. Then in the castle I didn't see that you could shoot down the portrait, revealing the torch lighting order. Maybe I was blinded by the desire to kick Ganon's ass, but I didn't see it for a while. It was kinda funny that you get through all these dungeons and large areas with ease, only to be stuck at these little puzzles.

I realize now that those puzzles could be so easily solved by just turning into wolf form and taking the
ghost hints
.

I noticed today that
guards start to hassle you if you run around castle town in wolf form long enough, and they actually drop items and rupees if you beat them
This one is probably obvious and picked up by everyone, but if you get on Epona from the back, you'll get a running start.

So, anyone else know little extras, special dialogue or other crap? I read somewhere that if you talk to some cuccoo in Ordon village when things are fine again, he'll mention that he's afraid he'll be eaten at the feast that night or something. The game is probably filled to the brim with this kind of extra content.

Nope.

The Mailman is in the last fairy room for some reason though.

What does he say?

Anyway I just played the
bird
game for the 1st time, as well as the
canoe
game. Theyre actually funner than they look. second one is pretty challenging, I keep getting 24 pts.

I just played through an hour of Wind Waker today (nephew was visiting and he wanted to play it).

I noticed a few things. First, I find the graphics in Wind Waker to be better to those in Twilight Princess. Second, after getting used to the Wiimote controls you simply cannot go back to the GC controls. I have not played the GC version of Twilight yet, but comparing it to WW the Wii version is far superior. It felt so much better, at least for me, to waggle to swing the sword.

I am interested in seeing how other polished games feel on the Wii. Too bad Nintendo cheaped out on the graphics.

Anyone know what the
giant pillar in Lake Hylia next to the cannon house is supposed to be for? I got up there, and all there is is a chicken that says it's too far to fly. No hidden grottos or anything.

just finished... wow... it doesn't matter how i really feel about the game, every single gamer sould play this one... 40+ hours

Oh yeah, one really minor nitpick I have: I like the effect when Link's tunic gets wet, but when it's raining, his tunic looks dry. :\

Link is such a badass, he's actually dodging the raindrops as he moves.

It's too fast for you to see, though.

Im going around collecting secrets/poes/heartpieces now. Whats amazing about Zelda games (and this one more than the others) is that completing the game feels like just a thin slice through Hyrule. You go back, and notice areas you didnt even know existed before, secret caves and mini-dungeons, and a ton of awesome little tricks, puzzles and areas to get heartpieces.

I was just screwing around, thought Id take one of the owl statues on an adventure with me, give it a tour across the Eldin bridge, and unexpectedly I got rewarded for it. Also, if anyone has not gotten to the top of the Eldin bridge watch tower- do it, the view kicks ass.

I've already managed to find 11 heart pieces, but I've spent a lot of time just wandering around blowing up rocks, searching for mini dungeons. Some of the mini dungeons are really great...

But now I'm stuck trying to catch that damn
red fish
. I caught it once after a couple of minutes, didn't realize what I needed to do... So now I've been trying to catch another for about 30 minutes. They all surround the lure, but they don't bite. Any tips?

Not really. Just wait for the bobber to sink fully, then pull. Like you, I also caught it 3 times and was at a loss about what to do. When the solution struck me I felt like hitting myself. I guess its because I assumed I was supposed to use it as bait, and was trying to take it.

I am stuck help me:)

I am stuck in the sky temple, I can't find the room of the big boss.

Tell me where I need to go (I am in the room with all the ropes, the room outside the big dungeon key)

Guess it kinda sucks that there's an action/adventure game that can stump you, huh.

I assume you got the boss key...
Go all the way back to the huge central room- actually you dont need to, you just drop down the fan grate you stopped in the boss key room- it takes you all the way back there (That was actualle a HOLY SHIT moment for me, grappling down and realizing I was back in the central room. Genius.) From there, head North from the main room, and youll have to grapple across the windmills. Youll have the turn on the huge fan to get them turning first- Ill let you figure out how to do that.

A poe is there at night.

Just finished the game, definitely the best game of this year and one of the finer games ever made. Has it surpassed OOT though? Hard to say at this point, OoT has the nostalgia bonus.

I loved the final boss battles with Puppet Zelda, then Ganon, then Ganondorf again on horseback, then Ganondorf again in a duel. Talk about an epic boss fight. Now I had read an endgame spoiler before finishing the game, hearing that Midna dies. Wtf was that about? I heard so many people saying it from all different sources and it didn't end up being true.

I kept on hearing stuff about a main character dying, for a while I was convinced that Link was going to be reverse Moses and bring down the flood on himself.

Okay, here we go. As I mentioned yesterday, I have some very mixed feelings after finishing the game.

Positives:

-Dungeons and their designs for the most part were excellent (especially mother****ing 4, 6 and 7)
-Hyrule field is huge and fun to explore
-Cool new items (I'm looking at you temple 4)
-Perfect difficulty imo
-Lots of sidequests

Negatives

-The story was okay, but there were lots of lose ends that I didn't get
What was the deal with the kids getting kidnapped, and what eventually happened with Ilia? She just seemed to lose her importance all of a sudden after Dungeon 6
-Mother****ing
Zant! He came from being a pretty cool, evil bastard to just some stinkin toolbag clown monkey thing. Seriously, I felt like I was fighting Majora's Mask again. Ugh.
-The music. There were very few tracks that I felt were really good in the game. Everything else was just straight up bad (battle music) or just really forgettable. The fact that it was very low quality midi didn't help much either. Relative to the hardware, I felt it was worse than what the N64 was able to do.
-Some parts of the final battle.
I didn't like beast Ganon very much.

And after finishing the whole game, as frighteningly odd as it may sound, I didn't get a the same feeling of accomplishment as I did with OoT, or hell even WW. Heck, it seems like it underdelivered. Of course, I tried to play the game in the hurry, and I skipped nearly every sidequest in the game, and only did the mandatory things. The first Zelda game that I've ever played like this so far. The others I would do quite a bit in the game (sidequests, minigames, exploring, etc) before I'd beat the game. So that has something to do with it, I guess.

Heh, I just
Set one on fire and waited till it went out. One took longer to go out.
So I did that four times...

Anyone got a short story synopsis btw? I always forget half.
[edit]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Twilight_Princess[/edit]

And a thought:
Does the Master Sword being in the Temple of Time prove this is the Young Link timeline? As Young Link never pulled the sword from it's place. And in the adult Link time line it probably vanished along with himself?

/edit
Hmmm, I missed this part:
Link is then seen riding towards his home town after staking the Master Sword in the Sacred Grove.

What's the deal with the Magic Armour? I did all the quests and bought it for 600 and all it does is drain away all my rupees in less than half a minute? That seems so useless, or am I missing something? :(

On my way to the 7th dungeon. Clocking in about 45hours or so already and still enjoying this loads. :)

Bug alert! Anyone come across this and fix it? I'm at the 4th dungeon.
I walked through quicksand, climbed out last second, and now Link and Wolf Link are constantly 'walking through quicksand', even on solid ground
.

Just had a go at the bob fishing. Stupidly easy if you've ever been fishing in real life. Hilarious that it took a solid 10 minutes of pestering my little brother before he'd actually try what I suggested!
