Official Mario Party 8 Thread of EXCITE

Amir0x said:
all three of those last games you listed are also GCN converted... unless that was your point.

I guess the first official batch will be with the Mario Galaxy and Brawl, and the Forever Blue/Disaster Day

Eh since when was Metroid Prime 3 originally designed for GCN? The first time we saw it was in that little video in 2005 and that was running on the enhanced debug Gamecube, which had nothing to do with the game at all. The only Wii Metroid that was running on the GCN was the Wii version of Metroid Prime 2 that was shown behind closed doors to the press, to demonstrate the controller when it was unveiled!

I'm not buying another Mario Party until they add back in the mini-games from Mario Party 1 that would burn the skin off your palms. That was some hardcore ****.

I may still buy this.

I think I still have those free gloves Nintendo gave out to curb blistered palms stored away in some junk box somewhere...

The game aspect ratio is only 4:3 ?? Is this true?

Yes, it is true no widescreen apparently.

According to IGN, the menus display in widescreen, but once you get to the board, there are checkered bands on each side. I guess N still thinks the population of widescreen users doesn't justify fiddling with the game engine to fill up a widesreen. Once they make their millions on this rushed version, there will be no excuse.

Why is every review looking at Mario Party as "just another Minigame compilation" ?
I just dont get it. Mario Party is a boardgame where you have at the end of the an "event"(which is apparently a minigame)
Aaaaah I just dont get it. Maybe its also for you a minigame compilation but I just cant describe how the feeling for me differs from Rayman/Wario Ware whatever.

Also just to stay on topic - I played like one Mario Party game for N64 - it should be renamed Mario Luck. After playing someone and going through the board and shit and landing on one of those slot machine things or whatever that can make you lose all your stars, or give them to someone else, etc - wow that game has no purpose whatsoever. The incentive to win is a little ridiculous because no matter what you do it really doesnt matter.

A simple question is why Nintendo doesn't call up Hasbro/Parker Bros or whatever and collaborate on a Mario themed Monopoly game? Put in some online functionality, maybe some other Hasbro/Parker Bros games or whatever (no clue what others there are) - wouldn't that kick all kinds of ass? Would be better than the Mario Party games. Have an 'original' Monopoly mode where you play the game straight up with Mario themed things, then a 'wacky' mode where you can do Mario Party/Wario Ware minigames in game in community chest/chance cards, to get out of jail, build houses, etc to change the game. I think that would be some cool shit. Mariopoly = $$$$$$$$$$

I could have sworn they said that Metroid Prime III was moved to Wii from GCN, since it was like the first Wii game we ever saw, but maybe you're right.

Really looking forward to this after blowing through Wario Ware last night...

I can see people bashing Mario Party for having way too many iterations of it, but this is the first one for the Wii.... Wii-mote was born for mini-games.

Guess it helps that the only Mario party I played was for 10-15 minutes, one of the old N64 versions.

While I can see your point, it's always the new Mario Party that my gf (and some of my friends) look forward to the most. A blast to play with 4 people. Mario Party 7 gets as much or more playtime as Wii Sports when we meet up regularly.

Wait. "Over 30 new mini games". Meaning there's less than 40 mini games total, or that there are that many repeats? The last game had about 50 4-player games (excluding Bowser/DK mini games).

Bah my Gamestop isn't getting the game in for another hour yet.

Amirox can you update the OP with # of playable characters as well as game boards? (I believe it's 14 characters and 8 boards, 1 being unlockable)

Dodged a bullet here, talked the girlfriend out of buying the game. I have to rent it this Friday though.

I did play the original few as a drinking game with friends though, good stupid fun.

I haven't played Mario Party since the N64 days and I can't remember which one I played (all the numbers seem to blend together). So I'm considering renting this one even though the idea of badly thought out wiimote controls bugs me.

If I changed titles based on first-time experiences from the Nintendo fan beltway - specifically involving noted hyperbole and EXCITEment - then i might as well name every Wii game thread EXCITE. The Official GODFATHER Thread of EXCITE. The Official Red Steel Thread of EXCITE. Heck, even that steaming pile SONIC would have been named EXCITE! No shame!

Nah, I'll keep the EXCITE renaming to EXCITE TRUCK 2.

If I can get someone else in my family to buy a second Wii Remote (do you need the Nunchuk for this game?), I may consider buying this. Mario Party has never been that good for single player, and i'm not paying for both the game and a second controller.

The only Mario Party I've owned was the first one, but I think I'm going to get this despite the bad reviews. The series doesn't really feel old to me since I haven't played most of them, and it sounds like it would be fun enough with friends.

and thank you

alright, just played a 15 turn game with my roomate. My initial impressions:

The graphics are beautiful. I havent seen enough to say its better than Gamecube, but the pirate level is well designed and has background from super Mario sunshine. The pacing seems a bit slower than Mario party 7. You have to use the pointer to select things in a menu style, since you no longer have shoulder buttons and analog to do that (only use the wiimote).
You have to tilt the wiimote up to hit the dice, something Id have preferred with just a button, since it feels slightly clunky. It plays exactly the same as previous, and I havent explored the modes yet, but it seems like there are plenty to go through. the characters are all slightly inproved from Gamecube version although I ****ing hate Daisy's voice in this one.
Now to the minigames. IGn was right in that certain ones, like the airplane shooting and the clock time match game can get annoying if you lose contact with the sensor bar and its noteceably laggier than Wariowares implementation but youll get used to it pretty fast. Its not as frenetic as a result and I have to play some more to see if this really affects my enjoyment of the game. Also, they replaced orbs with candy, which is basically the same thing. Otherwise, Bowsers still there to piss in your cheerios.

So far though, its been fun. Im glad I bought it.

As of now, 7/10.

yeah, put another in the column of "haven't really overloaded on Mario Party." We played the shit out of 4 and I barely remember playing a little bit of 5. I think I bought 6 but never played it. Not even once (borrowed it to my brother and never got it back). Skipped 7. So the last MP that we played like crazy was 4. I think a 3 game break is adequate enough to get back into it.

I think de facto "boycotting" the 4-7 games (by virtue of having no interest in them) has made Mario Party 8 feel very fresh to me. If you have friends or a sig. other and haven't played the games in years, you'll enjoy it.

I wasn't going to get the game, but for $29.99 at Circuit City, I caved in. I hope it's good. Yes, that's $29.99 not $39.99.

Hold up - is this at all CCs or is it some wacky local promotion? That's a killer price.

Just bought it and Shadowrun (yes, I know my tastes might be different than yours), but I don't want to play it solo, so I'll post impressions after my wife gets home and we bang a few out. Games, of course.

You could say the same about any sports game, be it Madden, Winning Eleven and such. Actually, there's more renewal between each MP. I bought all of them since MP2. I've often friends at home, and it's probably the game that everyone can enjoy. But the fact is we love discovering new games (even if it's mostly cosmetical) and new boards. One MP each year (or 18 month) is really welcome.

By the way, it's not so "random" (most of the time, the same players are winning... There's just enough random to make the others have their chance).

30 NEW mini-games. Rest are general retreads from older Mario Party games.

:lol There was a line of at least ten people waiting to get this game at Circuit City right at 2 p.m. There were also two other guys that wanted Forza Motorsport 2.

Anyhow, I played maybe an hour of the game so far. I've played some of the Mii-related games, gone through two boards, only unlocked a handful of mini-games, and have bought an item to place in my "parade" or whatever it's called in the game.

My friend got kind of disgusted when he went through a board and saw that we had to wait and watch the COM do their mini-games before our turn would start. However, I checked under the menu (hitting the + sign) and there was an option that enabled you to turn those off.

I've played a mini-game where you need to tilt the controller to sort different colored blobs. I've also played ones where you use the remote to circle around a giant eye until it gets dizzy. There's ones where you need to hammer nails, saw logs, and paint, and there's ones where you need to slam the remote down (Mortal and Pestle style in Wario Ware: SM). I've also played a couple minigames that just use the D-Pad and 2 buttons.

There's a lot to unlock in this game. Extra characters, new mini-games, toys, etc. can be bough. It might take a long time to unlock most or all of the mini-games, though, as you have to go through the boards multiple times.

One board (Goomba's) is a straight shot down a beach that's filled with Pianta's and a rich Goomba that rewards you with a star at the end. This is the simplest of the boards. Another board takes place in a mansion with multiple turns and dead ends that take you back to the start. I've really enjoyed the DK and train boards of the four I've played so far.

There's a lot to unlock, but unless something really ruins the experience, I don't see how this is a 5/10 game, especially if you haven't bought a Mario Party game in years. Yeah, there's been a couple of minis that don't have the controls down as much as you'd like them to, but there's also several more that you realize would suck if just analog sticks and buttons were used.

It's a 7/10 game and when more people are around for you to bowl over, leech coins from, and look like Wii-tards as well, the game only gets better. If you haven't bought a Mario Party game in a while and maybe you'd want to give it a shot at $40 then check out Circuit City this week.

CC has an unadvertised deal of buy 2 Wii games, get an additional $20 off. I just went in with a co-worker and we each bought one so it came out to $29.99 each.

Ok. Ive just put several hours into this game with two friends and Im bumping my score up. Its a SOLID 8.5/10. Ive enjoyed this one more than the previous ones and graphics wise, make no mistake, THIS LOOKS GREAT. Everything visually is a step up from anything cube did with the series and the boards feel very lively and interesting. The core gameplay is exactly the same and for me thats a very good thing. with a game like this, it doesnt have to change much to stay fun. Minigamewise, there are a few misses, but overall, the games are solid and work well. Once you get used to the pointer (about 5 minutes) it becomes a cinch to play this game as quick as the previous ones. and the "**** you" candies are great. The special effects and overall feel of the game really do feel somewhat Next-gen in nature and the animations are superb. Bowser still levels the field and overall its a very solid followup to the series. In other words, if you dont mind this game playing like the previous ones and just want some fun new boards and updated visuals and of course wiimote games, then I recommend you to disregard the bad reviews. This game is well made and I definitely recommend it without a second thought.

Picking it up tomorrow. You've convinced me. Prolly trade in Madden 07 and Elebits for it.

good mario party game (I like 1, 4, and 7 if that means anything), plenty modes and extra mini games too. Wish they had brought back the bonus volleyball game. Missed opportunity with the bowling game, they let you use your miis yet it sucks compared to wii sports bowling.

Frys had the game for sale ($40) so i picked it up, since me and some friends from work get together about once a month for a gaming night, and mario party is always a fun way to end the evening of gaming.

Well i popped in the game and so far my impressions are "its alright". Now i have a 1080p Bravia TV (16:9) and to my shock and horror the game has no widescreen? WTF! Nintendo?!? Stop regressing. Its bad enough you don't go higher than 480p but its 2007 step the %($@ up. Then on top of that on my TV its just a jaggy hell. Seriously Its early PS2esque. Its very disapointing visually because of these two factors

I was by myself so i started up the solo challenge game, and went through the first board. Didn't play too many mini games as only duels occured. But from the ones i played, most were pretty fun. The exception was the "saw, hammer & nails" one. I swear the saw mechanic was broken. I couldn't get that freakin thing to cut.

I'll get more of a playthrough on friday when my friends come over.

on an SD TV the visuals are very pretty actually. I wonder if IGN didnt review this game on an HDTV too. It has to be played on SDTV to look as good as I saw it. And trust me it does.
