Official Metroid Prime 3 Corruption Hands-on Thread - ALL Previews here

When has Nintendo allowed much media of any of their games to be produced by media outlets pre-release with their Wii titles? I think they're still paranoid of the "graphics" difference between their premier Wii titles and 360/PS3 titles. That could also be why there was a lack of footage shown at the media briefing, too (besides time constraints).

WTF... people... I had beat MP2 echoes up to 85% so far hahaha. I have sky temple keys 5-9 but since I am out of sync I don't even know where to begin looking for the first four. Oooops =P. Suddenly I have Metroid Prime fever, heh
Check your logs. The section called the key bearers has clues to their locations.

Especially given how crap they look blown up on a 20 ft screen.

The main reason I'm hyped for this is, honestly, for once I think they nailed the controls. Something never felt quite right about the controls in Prime 1 and 2, although they weren't bad or even mediocre. Well, that and they finally did what I always wanted them to do and make the beam upgrades stack like in Super Metroid. It always annoyed me when you had to backtrack through some areas (especially in Prime 2) where you had to kill tough enemies to unlock a door (less annoying in Prime since the beams all have unlimited ammo, but still tedious when you face off against the hordes of enemies you have to constantly beam swap against). The actual backtracking wasn't bad, it was just that the combat could feel really slow (again, especially in Prime 2 unless you empty out the light/dark beam ammo) and that got on my nerves a lot. Usually in the 2d Metroids, when you backtrack through areas, you have beam upgrades that allow you to blast old enemies way faster. Hopefully this applies to Prime 3 as well.

The other thing I'm hoping they do is put in some crazy platforming secrets, probably using the grapple beam. I kinda felt like Prime 1's secrets were lackluster, while Prime 2's were slightly better.

i never thought MP1 select screen could be topped, but it has been. damn that sounds excellent, so epic and mellow... worthy of a final chapter! :D :D before i was gonna get this game just because it's Metroid Prime... but now I NEED THIS.

Damn! After reading all these positive reviews, I am really excited for MP3: C. And you can put me in the group who disliked the backtracking. I like MP1. It just has that feel you know. But oh man... so much backtracking. Retro made the right move in my opinion cutting down the backtracking. Another thing I like is the Halo reference. Halo is one of my favorite FPS next to Goldeneye. So any connection with Halo is good in my books. August can't come soon enough.

Am I the only one avoiding videos on MP3 besides the official trailers.

I try not too, but the monkey on my shoulder makes me click the links. :(

He picks his moments though. Mass Effect I'll be flying into blind. :D

wow, that looks incredible. I wonder why no other publication has shown that?

WIsh the quality of the movie was better though.
Maybe they weren't allowed too, and this video is shot by one of the many corporate ninja's I hear so much about.

They didn't seem to be that busy during E3. Nobody was fired, Reggie still has his head.

I agree though. In the right hands two GCN's can do some pretty stuff. Maybe not the best, but pretty nonetheless.

In my experience with comedy, too far is never enough.

Might be why they won't let me back in the Chuckle Shanty.

I can't believe you many people are fretting over what 1up are saying. There's no need to worry people - this a demo level. Of course it's not going to contain backtracking and puzzles and secrets. It's a straightforward, action-packed part of the game designed to provide insight into the controls. Nothing to worry about. Remember the Metroid Prime E3 demo back in 2001? That was completely straightforward - in fact these MP3 demo levels are less so. No need to worry.

As I said in another thread, that title screen music kicks complete ass. So good. I got chills.

What i don't understand: Why would 1up jump to such conclusions? They have experienced writers on their staff and surley they all know that every prime game was demoed with action packed segments.

I'm not gonna attack 1up or anything because I enjoy a lot of their games coverage, but this seems extremly premature, especially looking at the history of the franchise and what the developers have said about this game. They've gone out of their way to say that it's an adventure game first and does contain all the elements that make a metroid game unique.

Also, the sky town segment has nothing in common with Halo. The general lack of combat in that demo and the rich art on display all reminded me of the other prime games in a big way.

So yeah, I haven't played the game, and they have, but I've watched a ton of videos and I just don't see what they're talking about, nor do I see any reason to doubt retro's promises about the overall content of the game.

Spoiler time. After that part in the portion Jackie played, you fight Rundus in a boss battle. He's corrupted by Dark Samus. He has this bad ass ice ability where he "surfs" around stage with an ice trail, kinda like Samuel L. Jackson's character in The Incredibles. He also can cause ice formations to rise from the ground, can freeze Samus with an ice beam, and tossed ice chunks. I don't suck at Metroid, but it took me 25 minutes to beat him. It's that hard. Very fast paced, the way to damage him is you have to stun him with a ton of hits, break off his armor suit with your grappling beam, and then damage him while he goes nuts in some hyper mode of his own firing all manor of ice projectiles. Near the end, he gets in the middle and swings a huge ass ice "club" weapon and tosses it at Samus. There was no effective way to "side-dash", but I managed to pull off a mini-one. Unfortunately, I actually died right before I could defeat him, so I couldn't see what else was after. The debug menu also showed a ton of other level names and areas...unfortunately I can't remember them and I wasn't allowed any form of camera (nor would I have wanted to do that as I was their guest).

I like how the title screen from MP1 was biological ( cells and stuff ), MP2 was Technical ( like a high tech computer, how the letters appeared, gray ) and MP3 is mhh... ghostly? can't get the right word, somebody help?

The blue/purple explosion is a clear reference to Samus' corruption which will be this game's leit motif.

Extraterrestrial? Celestial?

The title screen music didn't blow me away.... It's nice though, kind of ear grating. I like watching the environments though. They are so big

Well looks like they're going the whole Halo-route with the presentation of this game, it'll probably work wonders for them.

On a serious note it does look pretty good, the controls being the main point of interest for me. I'm a primarily PC gamer and absolutely cannot stand console FPS's with dual analog.

:lol Goddamn. I hope I'm not the only one who thinks the title theme is shit.

I didn't think it was that bad. But no, it did almost nothing for me but hurt my ears.

Metroid Prime 1 theme was the absolute best. Very haunting, creepy.
Metroid Prime 2 was great too when it broke into a choir.
This one...

New boss fight video from the first demo level (and it continues on to the 2nd level which is an upgraded version of the E3 2006 demo).

Awesome video.

Grapple beam now grapple lasso.
When samus enters her ship and you press the new heading button on the center console, a basic map for the level on the planet below pops up asking you to choose your landing site. There is only one landing site available at that time but I would assume planets will have multiple landing sites based on this info :D

The music is epic and incredibly dramatic at the same time. When Mark Pacini said that the OST would have been like Ben-Hur's OST, it was not joking !

Pacini is a robot confirmed.

I like the title music.

They should put echoes as an promotional bonus (with wii controls). Not many people got to play that game, and it would be a neat boost for the launch.

Watching these clips is reminding me that Retro must have some of the best artistry in the industry, and they are so organic in comparison to so much of the stale crap that gets released today (I'm not just talking about visuals either, but soundtrack as well). Incredible stuff.

What do you think they're going to do after Prime 3?

I'm going to take a shot and guess that either they're going to do Icarus, or they're going to be Nintendo's shooter studio (i.e. make an FPS instead of an FPA), an online multiplayer game of course. With the talent they have at the studio (much of which came from a shooter background) it's likely the best course of action and the fruits of their labor will pay off, I'm sure. Man, am I going to miss the Prime games, though.

Wii 2 will probably have another Metroid game from Retro, however, depending on the sales of Prime 3.

It would be interesting for them to handle a Zelda game. But not going to happen.
**** that noise, let them make a totally original IP they really deserve to work on something original.

they are a really talented group.

All they would do anyway is take the Oblivion engine and make a Zelda graphics mod.

I thought in past demonstrations the whole hand interactivity mechanic with levers/switches etc was done with the nunchuck?

Wii game.

I haven't played the other Prime and I persoanlly LOVED the title screen for MP:3.

One quick question, do I need to know anything about the Metroid univers, play the other Metroid games, especially Prime 1 and 2, before I play MP:3?

Prime 1 and 2 have a bit of a storyline connection involving a major enemy and a constant nemesis/problem, but the story in both games is so thin that you probably wouldn't notice very much when you were playing prime 3.. This one will conclude the story and there will probably be moments where you go "wtf??" but I doubt if it's so dependent that it will hurt the game much..

On the other hand, prime 1 and 2 are particularly excellent games, especially the first one, so I would never recommend skipping them... But if you really dislike the idea of playing them, it would probably be ok.

As for the older metroids... Super metroid is magnificent and the original metroid is great but dated in some annoying ways. Neither of them would be nessecary to enjoy the prime series. The story in those is even more abstracted and less a part of the game than in the 3d versions. I've never messed with the handheld metroids, but people tell me that some of them are excellent and I think one of them (not sure about the name) serves as a good surrogate for metroid 1 since it uses the same world and story only with mechanics from super metroid.
