i am having trouble with hitting the ball. not really with getting wood on the ball but here is what i dont understand:

lets say the pitcher is throwing a fastball low and i have a guy on 3rd base with 1 out. now i want to hit a deep fly ball to score the runner. but if the guy is throwing low, and i push up on the stick and swing, will i still connect with the ball and lift it up? seems if i hold down on the stick i hit a grounder. but if i aim up i totally miss. anyone have some insight on hitting?

The left stick handles the cursor placement (where you're swinging at) and the right stick can be used to coax a certain play into happening. Pressing up on the right analog stick goes into fly ball mode - efficient for scoring the runner in from 3rd on a pop fly. Pressing down on the right analog stick goes into grounder mode - which is self explanatory.

"Plate Coverage Indicator is the bomb!!!" What it essentially does is give you an indicator of where you are aiming your bat when you swing. This one feature singlehandely should shut down the players throwing junk pitches as this makes it very easy to track pitches way outside the strike zone. Love this game!! :D

How are you guys playing this game? I know there are the hardore, but man, I just can't see going through a 162 game season.

MLB 07 hooked me so bad I was playing 3-6 games a night. At that clip, seasons just fly. =P

That's not counting Road to the Show.

It's not difficult to play 10 games in a row.

After playing the demo i think i'm a convert! It's really a great playing baseball game. The pitching is pretty rewarding when you get the hang of it and the batting actually forces you to work counts and be patient. Love the demo and i will get the game ASAP.

I'm a pretty terrible batter, but does this game have anything left of 07's guess pitch system? I played the demo and it's not like 07. In 07 you'd guess the pitch and if it was right you'd see where it was coming. Is there any option like this in this one?

Wasn't there a guess pitch system in the demo? Hit R2?

There was but you had to guess where it was going to be. Oh well, I just really liked that feature and helped my Road to the Show guy bat .500. :lol

You hold R2 and press the face button of the pitch you're guessing. You can also point the stick in the direction you think the pitch is coming. You'll get a flash of red right before the pitch if you guessed correctly.

Check the options and there are options to change the type of guess pitch. What you're looking for is "Classic" or something like that. However, it's no longer a big lock on reticle, it's a small red dot where the pitch will be.

It's like, Classic 1/4. Something like that.

That actually sounds bad. If people can't throw in the dirt or throw high cheese, then the scores will get ridiculous.

As per the usual, despite hearing claims that Game X (in this case MLB 08) is available early in all kinds of places across the US, no store within 30 minutes of my house had the game. I think this makes me 0 for 35 in attempts at getting a game before the street date. For the obscene number of douches and idiots that live on Long Island apparently none of them work in retail.

Guess I'm waiting until Tuesday.

I'm not entirely sure what Shawnwhann means there, but in my experience playing with the plate coverage indicator actually makes me worse at hitting. Instead of tracking the ball I end up focusing on that yellow blob on the screen. But hey, if it works for ya...

It sounds odd. Almost artificial. One of the things I like about MLB is that it plays pretty close to a real game and captures the essence of the pitcher/batter duel. If there is some way to set a monitor to watch for pitches out of the strike zone, I hope it is not used in the league.

Oh, no its not anything like that. The "plate coverage indicator" is just the yellow oval you can turn on or off in the hud that shows where you're positioning the bat. I guess the dude was saying it helps him pick off bad pitches without swinging at them. How Im not sure, like I said I stink with it. :lol

So anyone have the PSP version yet? I've learned from Gamefaqs that it still doesn't have a franchise mode (or umpires on the field). But did they at least fix the bugs from last year?

See here is a problem with the Roster updates... Tonight I got the update, started a new season... fine... all is good... Santana is on the mets, ect.... Roster is up to date...

Now, as of 5 minutes ago I log onto Sports Connect and it asks if I want to download a new updated Roster and it gives me a breakdown of whats new. What players moved from position players to bench players, ect.... it also gives detail about how the roster updates are going to work this season...Not only will it update rosters, but it will also update player attributes, so if they are doing good in the real world they will do good in the game, and vice versa... It also captures any DL updates... who's hurt, who has come off the DL ect... So the problem now is, with all these different aspects, they obviously want you to download the rosters each week, so you can enjoy the game to its fullest, but it seems once you start a new season, you cant update the rosters anymore...

Rest easy gents....the plate coverage indicator is not usable in online games. Not that it is some big cheese feature anyway.... :(

For some reason alot of features from the single player game aren't available in the online game. For example, you can't switch any views like to my fave "behind the pitcher" when you are pitching, no "L2" pitcher status module for putting relievers in the bullpen (you gotta pause and go through menus...), and no plate coverage indicator. When the "Guess Feature" is on, it isn't a big deal but when it's off that tool is great for keeping up with people that throw junk. Since we are likely not having the guess feature on for the league, it's going to be a big adjustment to those of us that play alot of online games.

Still love the game alot, but digging in here has exposed some holes...

Dah! Bummer! So, both players use the batter's view for pitching and batting? Eh, oh well. I'll practice that.

Eh, it's pretty easy to say you can't. Pretty much once you start your own season, you're starting your own "world". Your season will play out differently than the real life season, so it's understandable and makes sense to me.

I have always wanted a game to do this! (Mostly a football game). But the season thing kills it, what the hell. Maybe its meant for online play only which would suck. The problem with the season thing is any moves you do would totally mess up the roster update so i can see why it wont work but I always hoped some company would figure out a way to do it. I always wanted to play a season where whats happening in the game and the real world matched.

Exactly... Then again I guess I could see the issues with that... If you dont play your games on the same schedule as the real life team, and then you get that roster update, and lets say Derek Jeter in the real world in a game against the Angels, hurts himself and is on the DL for 3 weeks, and this happened in a game in June, but in your season, its only April still and you get the update, now Jeter is out, when he should still be in.,....

It just sucks, because in the game, it specifically asks you, "DO YOU WANT TO SAVE THIS ROSTER TO USE LATER IN OFFLINE PLAY"

So doesnt that make you think they want you to update your rosters when new weekly ones come out.....

Sony better put their animation resources towards batting stances next year. Freakin coverguy has generic man stance. Unbelievable!

True you would have to play with the season for it to really work. With a baseball game it wuld be really hard but I think with football its doable. Make a special season mode, seperate from the normal one, that runs on the schedule, you only play one game a week ( you can play it at any time) and besides your team, the stats, scores and injuries happen exactly as they do in the real NFL. Obviously your team would beat teams that in the real world maybe won that week so the playoffs wont be the same but I think thats cool, its like an alternate take on this year, everything else is the same in the real world except what your team does. Once it reaches the playoffs it would probably have to stop cause the teams wont match.

As for that option, I guess its for use for those that start a season later, its so you can start it with the latest roster updates. I understand that trades and stuff would interfere with your personal league but I wish there was a way to just get the stats update. I hate it when you play a season and in the real world a once good player is crap or a new rookie becomes a sensation and in the game that is not portrayed correctly at all.

That's just way too many problems in even attempting that though. There is truly no way it's possible.

All of the roster updates are for the purpose of online play (aka, start your online league or whatever with the starting day line ups and go on from there), keeping them up to date for whatever reason, (exhibitions, so forth to jump in a play with the teams as they are at that point in the real life season) and for those sim hogs who wish to pick a roster update to start from.

The moment you start your own "world" (franchise, season, online league, etc), that's it. It's your world. What happens there, happens.

I understand what you are saying, but then why put in the instruction manual and in the game, that the rosters can be used online or saved to use later in offline mode... Perhaps they mean just in a quick game or exhibition game????

So for those who own it, if you've hit homers, does the ball bounce around in the crowd and/or bounce off walls? Last year it would go through stuff...

Wow, I am going to burn my 1 game of the month budget so early.

And btw Zep, might I direct you to PhillySucks.com, the greatest sports website.

Yes the ball physics and collision detection is there, hell even on foul balls when you try as a player to catch the foul ball, you reach over in the stands and the crowd is reaching for the ball also, its a joy to see.

Plate coverage indicator isn't cheese, its just a indicator for a batter who chases ball out of the strike zone, it will show how for of a reach he has. Its great to know these types of things especially for a good pitcher batter duel.

Got the game earlier day from Walmart. Played my first game on the difficulty above Rookie, I forget what it's called. I was the Braves playing against the Rockies. Ended up winning 1-0 in 15 innings. It is so friggin hard to get hits in the game.

I ended up getting a bunt single in the 15th due to the pitcher being bugged and just standing there looking at the ball as it rolled and stopped near the mound. Then on a hit and run play, Chipper Jones drove one down the right side foul line for the game winning hit. Tim Hudson was the player of the game even though he never made an appearance.

A patch soon would be nice. Lots of people playing online already. Over 180 people as of 3pm this afternoon and the game isn't even officially out. The in-game messageboard already has complaints of cheaters and cheesers. :D

regarding the league:

once we start the league does our "league universe" stay the same? what i mean is will our league be affected by the roster updates? are trades available for online leagues? anyone know?

Trading isn't available. And I'm pretty sure the rosters are like madden...It's just now they are weekly.
