Official Naruto: Rise of a Ninja thread - Dattebelieve it!

So, I pretty much can't stand the anime, but I do think this game looks pretty damn spiffy.

Worth a rental, at least?

My inner child wants this game so bad, but the shame I would feel to tell my wife I spent $60 on a Naruto game.

So I've played up through the entire bridge battle now, and noticed that earlier I never got the
Beat Kakashi
achievement. What's up with that? Glitch?

Absolutely love this game, never seen a Naruto episode but this game is a tonne of fun. Certainly different from the usual games I play.

Visually spectacular to boot.

That achievement isn't part of the plot. You get it when you challenge him and win.

Will I like this game if I get it? All I know is Naruto is some popular anime but i have no idea what its about or I care for. Is this game just made for fans?

Is Shikamaru, Shino and Hinata in this game? And will the Japanese DLC cover all characters?

Shikamaru will be a free DLC very soon, they said post launch. The community manager for UBISOFT said that the "entire" game will be in Japanese.

Damnit, this game is addictive - played for hours on end again last night without even noticing the time go by - I mean, I had high hopes for the game based on all of the vids I saw and all, but still, Ubi managed to surprise me with how faithful and polished this game is!

bloody hell, mate

That guy's ears must need cleaning - Naruto pronounces it properly everytime as "rah-men", as it should be... he says something different about ramen everytime he eats...

And yes, the Japanese voices will cover 100% of the game, right down to the NPC's and villians - the post is on the page before this one...

For all the "this is not just another anime fighting game" hype, it sure is a lot like a fighting game. The exploration is cool, just wish the fighting engine wasn't just another fixed area 2d plane 3d fighter. Do like the hand seals though.

Didn't that 3rd PS2 naruto game have an exploration element to it as well?

other characters say it differently, I heard one say it was the "a" sound in cat.

Which is surprisingly difficult. Dude pulls off Lightning Edge like it's nothing.

I got this Achievement by focusing most of my upgrades on increasing raw damage, and foregoing using jutsus entirely against Kakashi, relying on basic combos instead.

I'm kinda annoyed by how so many of the missions are "run out into the same forest you've been in 20 times before and collect this glowing thing."

i find jutsus almost impossible to pull off in any fight due to the time it takes, even after a big knockback i dont have time for the "bubble" to reach the required size so i just rely on punch, punch, punch, kick, block.

Buy some better combos. A lot of them have even bigger knockbacks

The ramen shop owner says "Rammin". It's pretty stupid.

Also, kind of annoying that everyone pronounces Naruto's name differently. "NA-ru-to" & "Na-RU-to".

Oh well, hopefully won't matter much longer with the Japanese DLC coming.

If you thought the story was horrible in the anime/manga, then you'll hate it here. The way it's cut up makes the original look like Shakespeare. I guess they figured that the people who were going to play it had already seen the story a million times. In what I've played so far, they have wasted plenty of cool gameplay opportunities, too. :\

The gameplay itself is mediocre, but it looks like it'll get better as you progress. Advice: don't do the shop quests until after you get the double jump. :P I did all of them without it and that was a pain in the ass. BTW, if those coins are so damn valuable, why is there 1 in every trashcan in the village? ;)

The platforming outside of the village is bad because of the shoddy camera and floaty controls coupled with weird gravity/physics. I also hated having to gather steam to run, but you get a speed button later on. Inside the village, however, it's fun finding ways to get to the top of buildings just like in Crackdown. I think I got some coins that I wasn't supposed to get yet (pre-upgrades) because you can treat the platforming like a puzzle.

Most of the quests so far are fetch quests. I hope it gets better, but I'm guessing most of it will be similar. Fetch quests with the occasional horribly designed filler bandit/extra character popping up once in a while.

I just did the mission to get some woman's husband back from the land of waves and now I can't find any more missions. Am I required to do the races? Someone give me a hint here.

so wait ... do you own the game or not?

beating Kakashi and unlocking that "ace student thing" was easy like no other.

I found that if you are ever in a pinch, just jump and doing a viewtiful joe style kick at the enemy, knocks them back and gives you time.

That was a quest. I believe you are at the part where you have to find Konohamaru. He's in one of the alleys

This is my biggest complaint in the game. As I've seen the Naruto anime and know the story well, it sucks to see how rushed so much of the story is and to see where they missed out on perfectly good opportunities to add more gameplay and character development for the story.

I also hate seeing so many anime cutscenes in the game. Fans saw this stuff years ago. I really wished they had used in-game cutscenes replicating this stuff. And the lifeless character models really disappoint as well. I was hoping they'd be a lot more animated. Mouths not moving is almost unacceptable.

Other than that, I'm still really enjoying the game, and look forward to seeing Ubisoft fix their mistakes in the inevitable sequel.

I don't think that's it. I see Konohamaru hanging out with Moegi and some other kids but, he doesn't say anything.

Good to see you didn't make a new topic for this. IGN's review says those who've never seen Naruto can enjoy the game. It starts up at the very beginning of the story.

Almost? The GNT series had no problems with animating lips to voice lines. That shouldn't be acceptable at all really.

That being said, I'll still probably pick this up as I'm a sucker for a decent anime fighter.

Fiancée rented this (she's playing it right now) and I'm surprised to say that it isn't an outright horrible game. It actually looks decent!

I'll give it a try over the weekend but for right now Team Fortress 2 beckons.

Man, I've been running around for hours and nothing will happen. WTF. I saw the Gara cutscene and I rescued Moegi from the fake thieves and then I did a couple of missions that sent me to pick up 20 herbs and get this woman's husband from the land of waves. Now what? I found my way into the forest testing area but there was no one there. _-_

there are a lot of bad choices made in this game, almost too many to count and things that would have been flowned on in the N64 days.

Can you be more specific? I'm assuming you mean gameplay elements..

This game is very...lazy.

For every "oh my good cool" moment, there's a lot of really, really stupid decisions. The final boss fight is how the rest of the game should have been. Instead it tries to do a lot of things that it ultimately does not succeed at.

It's...solid. Not spectacular, but the best single-player Naruto adventure out there. I'd buy a sequel, since I can't imagine how they wouldn't add the obvious improvements.

Also, the post-game is really fucking broken:
Since the Third refreshes your memory clips, and he's gone in the post-game, you can never get them back.

Climb up the tree next to the red sign in the testing area.

there are a number of things, too many to list right now

Camera is one of the problems, random fights is another, not being able to swim is another, and the fact that you are forced to run along the same path over and over again.

it is so stupid, they make you run down this path to do an objective, then a teleporter pops up that lets you warp back to Konoha only to find out THE NEXT DAMN OBJECTIVE IS IN THE SAME DAMN AREA! so you have to run all the way back through that stupid forest area again to the same damn place.

and I actually thought that as the game went on the fighting system would evolve and become better, but it actually has become worse. Several situations at this point had me pounding away at the enemy knocking his health down only to have him use Rage and extend the fight and knock off a chunck of my health.

using clips from the anime to move the story along is also a huge mistake and just seems lazy. If anyone plays this and hasnt watched Naruto, they would be lost because they edit together several episodes into a 10 second clip and you go from A to Z missing all the other bits.

the game isnt awful, I havent finished it yet, im gonna go back into it tomorrow, but unless it blows me away in the final few hours then I would rate it a 7/10 or something. It is not the best Naruto game out there, it is a good start to what could be a great Naruto game series if there is more effort into the next one.

Honestly, at that point in the game do you really need them?

Honestly, so early into the game (helped the ramen shop owner find the money to open), I cannot say anything but good things about the game's various components: graphics, presentation, sound fx+music, gameplay, etc...

Screen tearing is very very minor and the game manages to have a stable frame-rate with several characters on screen, huge draw distance, well approximated collision detection with grass blades and plants, great texturing on objects, characters, and the far background. The game has also a pretty clean image quality and nice shader effects (I personally like the water effects quite a bit).

To sum it all up in a single sentence: it does show that the game was made with passion. It is the first thing that came to my mind when I was playing the game last night: I have to say that it is not common to see an anime based game so well polished overal, they did put quite a bit of effort into this project.

If you can buy it, do so... it can be a good start for the Naruto franchise in Ubisoft's hands: it is their first Naruto game and they already got so much stuff right (personally I LOVE the anime cut-scenes and I am glad they did not just replicate them with 3D graphics... I would have wanted more cut-scenes actually and longer ones too :D). Plus it is a good game to play if you are new to the anime/manga and if you are a fan of the show IMHO.

Also, the idea of memo-clips (used to help you restore your health and strength) is golden and one of the things that really make you feel like you are inside the Naruto world. I also like the way jutsus are performed: a very flexible and yet intuitive system. As some Skate players noted, sometimes motion sensing (be it SIXAXIS or Wii Remote) is not the silver bullet that solves all problems by itself: you can be efficiently creative with a normal game controller too.
