Official NFL Thread Week 2 - Saints are America's Team!

All Cadillac needed was 1 yard to win the game. He got 70 instead...lol. The stats are skewed because of the huge run. Miami was up ten when Taylor scored. It's going to be a great game and I can't wait to see how Mcgahee does.

The stats count either way, but yeah they are misleading. I was at the game and a dominant running attack by Caddy certainly wasn't the reason we lost. The rubes on ESPN would have you believe that Caddy took over the game and ran it down out throats.

Your exactly right Slo. All ESPN kept showing was the Cadillac run, as if he tore through the D all day. Vikes O cost them the game not their D. Their D kept them in the game and actually put up 6.

Pfft, welcome to the Bucs Week 1 loss to Washington last year. Portis had a 68 or so yard run to start the game, and then averaged like 2-3 yards a carry after that for the rest of the game yet you would have thought Portis was raping us all game from ESPN and other NFL media. So if I had to take it last year, you can take it this year. :)

CADILLAC RAPED THE VIKINGS!

Monday, Sep. 19th
NY Giants at New Orleans, 7:30 p.m.
Washington at Dallas, 9:00 p.m.

Baltimore at Tennessee 1:00 p.m. - Anthony Wright wants the starting job and he will play like it, then when he has it secure, he will start to suck again. The titans are easily my most boring team of the year..

Buffalo at Tampa Bay 1:00 p.m. - "Whatchoo talkin about" Willis McGahee will run wild, and the Bills D will pop a flat on that Escalade

Detroit at Chicago 1:00 p.m. - One of the 3 headed wr demons have to catch at least one TD pass and Kevin Jones will get the other. The cubs will score on a field goal at the end of the first half. thats it.

Jacksonville at Indianapolis 1:00 p.m. - Peyton didnt look too graceful on sunday night and I think that the gritty Jags can sneak a win in. they always play a close game.

Minnesota at Cincinnati 1:00 p.m. - I hate the vikings because Dante has to get his effin roll on, so I will pick against them all year in hopes that they never score a passing touch down and I dont have to see his semi retarded ass punch at an invisble speed bag...

New England at Carolina 1:00 p.m. - The ORIGINAL America's team will continue win and piss off all non patriotic fans nationwide.

Pittsburgh at Houston 1:00 p.m. - Willie Parker is the truth and I think the Texans cant handle the truth right now.

San Francisco at Philadelphia 1:00 p.m.. - TO out to destroy his old team

Atlanta at Seattle 4:05 p.m. - Atlanta's D will leave Matt on his "hassle"back.. queue rimshot...

St. Louis at Arizona 4:05 p.m. - St Louis needs this more than Leonard L. needs a forty... thats REAL bad...

Cleveland at Green Bay 4:15 p.m. - No Jevon, no problem, although I do want Romeo to get his first win.

Miami at N.Y. Jets 4:15 p.m. - Are the Jets really as bad as they looked against my team? And were the Dolphins as good as they looked against the broncos?

San Diego at Denver 4:15 p.m. - Both teams need this W, and Gates coming back should get SD this win.

Kansas City at Oakland 8:30 p.m. - obviously

N.Y. Giants at New Orleans 7:30 p.m. - SPIRIT of USA BOWL 1

Washington at Dallas 9:00 p.m.- blah

I look for some serious bubble bursting this week.... teams that are giving their fans false hopes about going 16-0 and teams that thought their shit dont stink..... The Chiefs will have to prove to me that they can stop Moss, hopefully Surtain will be up to the challenge. Priest and Larry should be good to go, and the D as a whole better be ready to put in even more work.

Sunday, Sep. 18th
Pittsburgh at Houston, 1:00 p.m. -
Detroit at Chicago, 1:00 p.m. - /Snore
Minnesota at Cincinnati, 1:00 p.m. - Tough Call, I'm bettin Vikes bounce back.
Jacksonville at Indianapolis, 1:00 p.m. - I like the Jags this year but not at Indy.
Baltimore at Tennessee, 1:00 p.m. - Better results for the Ravens this week.
New England at Carolina, 1:00 p.m. -
Buffalo at Tampa Bay, 1:00 p.m. - I have no clue at this point.
San Francisco at Philadelphia, 1:00 p.m. - I thought the 9er's looked solid last week, but at Philly off a loss? no thanks.
St. Louis at Arizona, 4:05 p.m. -
Atlanta at Seattle, 4:05 p.m. -
Miami at NY Jets, 4:15 p.m -
Cleveland at Green Bay , 4:15 p.m. - Double Snore
San Diego at Denver, 4:15 p.m. - One of these two is going to be in a deep hole to start the season. Denver's a tough place to play but I'm picking SD.

Kansas City at Oakland, 8:30 p.m. - Too many injuries and players suspended for the Chiefs to stay in this shootout.

Monday, Sep. 19th
NY Giants at New Orleans, 7:30 p.m. - Guess :\
Washington at Dallas, 9:00 p.m. -

edit: looking at that now it's far too many road teams. I'll have to make some changes. I did terrible the first week at 9/16 and don't feel much better so far

Please, the Bucs made a QB who threw 39 Touchdowns last year and is one of the top 5 or so in the league look like a little girl last week.. you think a guy starting his second game is going to be able to do anything? Even if McGahee gets 100 (he wont), the Bucs defense will stomp out any issues and the offense will put the ball in the end zone at least 3 times.

Easy victory.

.............. I dont know what this is all about.. but I guess that anger fueled his game for sunday so I hope that he takes another skank to the bar this saturday and his girl finds out and shows up, so he can be ready for sunday night...

PS

I do not condone woman beating! he should pay if he really did beat on his lady.... I am sure that this is not the first time he has done it, so he should be reprimanded... .

McGahee will get 180 yards because he's that damned good. Meanwhile, Williams will be stopped for 61 on 23 carries(How's that for a prediction?) and Griese will remind everybody that he is, in fact, Brian Griese. Plus, the Bills special teams and/or defense scores at least one touchdown.

I need some fantasy advice:

Ind Def vs Jac
or
Chi Def vs Det

I went with Indy last week on a feeling and netted 21 points. What do you guys think?

tough tough choice man... DET can break out at anytime with their wide receivers, but look at what Jimmy smith did last week, thats a toss up right there... Indy was playing the Baltimore Boellers... Jac is a better team offensively... toss up if u ask me... i would go with CHI's Def.

I'd suggest Chicago.

The Jags offense doesn't turn the ball over much, that's why Byron over throws into tight coverage a lot, he's afraid of interceptions. Plus we can really gun down the field a TON better than the Ravens. This will be a fun game:P

we should just start Campbell already. Brunell blows. I don't care if he had a good preseason, it was against 2nd stringers. He is done. If the coaching staff doesn't like Ramsey, then start the rookie. Shit he can't play any WORSE than the other 2 fuckers. What Gibbs REALLY needs to do is find some good offensive mind out there, maybe like a WR or QB's coach, to help spice up the offense. We also need a number 1 reciever badly, but that will have to wait til the offseason.

I just don't think Campbell's ready yet. What little we saw of him in preseason did not impress me. I think we had a chance at a winning season with Ramsey -- now, I don't think we'll see .500. Too much turmoil, too many mixed signals. Like I said earlier, I've lost faith in Gibbs with this decision, and he's going to have to prove himself to me now. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not holding my breath.

Still, I'll be there every home game, supporting my team as part of the Twelfth Man.

So...when the Bucs scored 2 TDs (via the REAL Alex Smith), the (highly, and undeservingly vaunted) D wasn't to blame? when Galloway had almost 100 rc. yds on 3 catches at the end of the first half, it was the offense's fault? When Caddy had 70 yds by the end of the first half, Culpepper was missing tackles?

And about the Caddy run, yeah it inflated the stats, but take away a huge run from virtually in RB in a game and they won't look like they had an impressive afternoon.

Oh, and the stats inflation also works as deflation. See, before that run Caddy had like a 2.99 ypc avg right? But he racked up almost 70 yds by the end of the first half, IIRC. If you want to include/exclude then yeah, you can manipulate any stat. Looking at the first half, Caddy ran wild. Looking at the whole game minus the 71 yd run, Caddy got stopped. Looking at the whole game, Caddy owned.

I predict that McGahee will HAVE to run wild, there's no other option for the Bills. If the Bucs shutdown the run and force the Bills into a passing game - Moulds and Evans be damned, there will be picks ahoy for the secondary and Lossman will be in tears. For me, it's not about McGahee getting 100's of yards, cause it's a must - it's totally binary, Bills can't win this game on Lossman's arm. McGahee either runs wild and Bills win, or he doesn't and they lose.

Yes, the Vikings D was to blame. Specifically in giving up 3rd and long all game long. The Bucs basicallly just threw to whoever Brian Williams was covering for the first. In Madden we'd call this a money play, in real life we call this bad defense.

Oh, and the stats inflation also works as deflation. See, before that run Caddy had like a 2.99 ypc avg right? But he racked up almost 70 yds by the end of the first half, IIRC. Ok, I have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. That 70 yard run could also deflate stats? Huh?

Look, you guys won. We lost. You deserved it, we didn't. Caddy just wasn't the reason.

I haven't seen a single person say Caddy was the reason. Even over at ESPN. The defense (if you've read the articles) is who gets credit for the victory. Caddy is just someone they gush over for his performance, in no way is he credited with being the reason the Vikes lost....I'd love to see the article if it's been said in one....because I agree with you, it was a defensive performance, and general demonstration of our rookies' potential, if anything.

About the 70 yds thing, I was saying that the last run inflated the stats yes, but prior to the second half he had great stats already. The second half is what brought his YPC down. I was pointing out how pointless it is to remove certain plays to justify/disprove a stat.

Yeah. And you gotta admit, 100+ yards for a Rookie, in his first game of the season is pretty fucking good. Specially for tampa bay, tehy been lookin for a good back for years.

Larry Johnson arrested http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/4867584

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Larry Johnson turned himself in to face an assault charge after an altercation with his girlfriend at a bar, the latest in a series of troubles with the law for the Kansas City running back and other Chiefs players.

Police Department spokesman Darin Snapp said Johnson was cited Monday for domestic abuse assault. He posted bond and was released, with a court date set for Sept. 20.

Snapp said Johnson's girlfriend came into the bar early Saturday and saw him with another woman. The 25-year-old girlfriend, of Overland Park, Kan., then walked away, Snapp said, but Johnson text messaged her on her phone and asked her to meet him downstairs.

He then grabbed the woman by the arm and pulled her to the front door, where Johnson asked the manager to make her leave, Snapp said. The manager said he couldn't do that.

Snapp said Johnson became irate after his girlfriend confronted the other woman. The running back grabbed his girlfriend by the shoulders and shoved her to the floor, the police report said.

The Kansas City Star reported on its Web site Tuesday that the girlfriend denied that she was pushed or dragged to the door. Snapp said the woman told police she didn't want Johnson arrested, but wanted the incident documented.

Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said the incident will not affect Johnson's standing with the team. Johnson, a backup to starter Priest Holmes, ran nine times for 119 yards against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Johnson was charged in December 2003 with aggravated assault, a felony, and misdemeanor domestic battery for allegedly brandishing a gun during an argument with an ex-girlfriend at his home. He entered a diversion program and was required to complete 120 hours of community service, attend an anger management course and stay out of trouble for two years.

If it's determined he committed a criminal act, Johnson County prosecutor Paul Morrison said his office would file a motion to revoke the running back's diversion.

Johnson is the latest of several Chiefs players in trouble with the law either at bars or because of alcohol.

Earlier this year, cornerback Eric Warfield pleaded guilty to a third offense of driving under the influence, a felony. He was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of this season.

During training camp, backup quarterback Todd Collins was involved in a scuffle at a restaurant and bar near River Falls, Wis.

In earlier incidents, kicker Lawrence Tynes was charged with breaking a bouncer's nose in a River Falls bar fight. Defensive tackle Junior Siavii and safety Greg Wesley also were arrested during camp after allegedly getting into a drunken confrontation with police in a Minneapolis hotel.

Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said his players know that anything they do - or are accused of doing - will be magnified because of who they are.

"I think we do as good as the best job in the National Football League of making sure players are aware of their vulnerability, their profile," Vermeil said. "There's no place to hide in Kansas City. Our fans know our players. To use common sense and to be aware of the problem areas. Stay out of the bad areas. Be aware of certain things."

Damn, Larry Johnson ran wild over the Jets Sunday.

Finally... some common sense is posted among all the hilarious stuff I've read from delusional Bears fans rampaging this thread. Only thing I have to disagree with here is that the Lions running game is better than you give credit for. And our run defense on the edges has been a concern, but if one of the best RBs in the league in Ahman Green couldn't run outside with much success, what makes anyone think Thomas Jones/Adrian Peterson or Cedric Benson could do better?

Kruza

How bout an offensive line that doesn't include a 7th round rookie. Green Bay is in shambles. The Bears are a lot more well rounded team than GB. The defense will keep us in most games, and Orton now has a game under his belt now. I'm looking to see some rythm and some good plays made by him Sunday. As far as Benson, he probably won't run much but they'll see what he can do. 8-10 carries probably. Thomas Jones should get 15 or so. It's gonna be all about creating a few drives Sunday and grabbing yards. I wouldn't expect the same performance as last Sunday. They'll definitely get more than a TD. Like I said, I'm looking at 17 pts plus.

As far as the Lions, you should plan for a lot more pressure on Joey Harrington than you got last week. If the Bears shut down the running game, which is very possible, you got guys like Mike Brown, Lance Briggs, and Urlacher who can give Joey a lot of problems in coverage and blitz schemes. It's certainly gonna be no walk in the park.

Bills can't win this game on Lossman's arm.

Funny, Houston said the same thing. The result? Losman had around 150 yards passing against Dunta Robinson and Philip Buchanon in the first half. This allowed Willis to have open running lanes, which resulted in him having a 5.8 yard average in the second half.

You guys can discredit and play down Losman all you want, but he looked damn good against two very solid corners last week, as well as a quick, young front 7.

As for punching it in the endzone at least 3 times against Buffalo... :lol :lol :lol :lol

Chicago. The Indy defence is at its best when it's defending a big lead. Traditionally that doesn't happen against Jacksonville.

You didn't just use Houston as a gauge to TB's secondary....I mean, I couldn't have just read that...

Losman's arm or not, one-dimensional passing mode is what the Bucs D WANTS, it's how they got vaunted, it's how they became the measuring stick to which all other defenses are compared for the past decade. The Bucs' run stopping ability is their weakness, not the pass. If they can get you to do that, then I don't care if it's a genetically engineered Vick/Elway/Montana/Marino/Bradshaw/Unitas/Manning(Archie, Eli, and Peyton) hybrid taking snaps - you're going to face terrible odds at scoring. Well, unless Tim Wansley's there, but he's no longer in the NFL, so....

Baltimore at Tennessee 1:00 p.m.- They both looked pretty bad last week, but Tenessee looked damn bad.

Buffalo at Tampa Bay 1:00 p.m.- I can't pick against the Bills, but this is going to be a tough one. Tampa Bay's offense made Culpepper look like a rookie last week, so I fear for Losman. However, Tampa is not going to score either...whoever gets the (most?)defensive touchdown(s) will win.

Detroit at Chicago 1:00 p.m. Bears defense is really good, and in a home game I'll give them the edge.

Jacksonville at Indianapolis 1:00 p.m.

Minnesota at Cincinnati 1:00 p.m.- No way I thought I'd be picking Cincinati in this one a week ago.

New England at Carolina 1:00 p.m.- the old "I'm not picking against New England until they lose."

Pittsburgh at Houston 1:00 p.m.- Things don't get any easier for the Texans.

San Francisco at Philadelphia 1:00 p.m.- Philadelphia does not seem to play well early in the season, but they're going to want to show up at home.

Atlanta at Seattle 4:05 p.m.- NFC West sucks. It's SF's division to lose! :lol

St. Louis at Arizona 4:05 p.m.- see above. No idea who to pick here.
Cleveland at Green Bay 4:15 p.m.- Green Bay can't be that bad, can they? Not bad enough to lose to Cleveland at least.

Miami at N.Y. Jets 4:15 p.m.- Miami's defense too good for Pennington.

San Diego at Denver 4:15 p.m.

Kansas City at Oakland 8:30 p.m. - Final score of this game: 87-64

N.Y. Giants at New Orleans 7:30 p.m.- Let's all jump on the America's team bandwagon!

Washington at Dallas 9:00 p.m.- Washington can handle Bledsoe.

Ravens may pursue Ramsey
September 13
Washington Times (scroll down): "ESPN reported last night that Ramsey -- whose contract runs through 2006 -- has asked to be traded... A possible suitor for Ramsey is the Baltimore Ravens, who lost starter Kyle Boller for a minimum of three weeks with a turf toe injury."

Saints a feel-good story for now, but future not bright for their fans

By TIM DAHLBERG, AP Sports Columnist
September 14, 2005
The New Orleans Saints gave the NFL just what it wanted Sunday -- a feel-good story to warm the hearts and wrap the flag around. The team with no home won one for people with no homes.

Saints fans cheered as they watched on big screens in shelters across the country, and for a few hours, at least, everyone had something to smile about.

If this were a Hollywood movie, the Saints would go on to win the Super Bowl, the parade down Bourbon Street would spark the city's rebuilding effort, and the team that saved New Orleans would become as much of an institution as Mardi Gras.

Unfortunately, this is real life. And that leaves the future of the Saints almost as murky as the water that still covers much of the city.

The most immediate part of that future begins Monday night when the Saints travel to New York to play the Giants for a ``home'' game in front of some 78,000 fans who won't be cheering for running back Deuce McAllister and don't have a clue who Wayne Gandy is (for the record, he's an offensive lineman).

The only home-field advantage in the Meadowlands belongs to Saints owner Tom Benson. He's the guy who, thanks to the NFL, will pocket the receipts from a large paying crowd made up almost entirely of Giants' season ticket holders.

The Giants can probably use an extra home game to help calm Eli Manning down, but there was really no logistical reason why the Saints couldn't have hosted the game in San Antonio. Because oddsmakers usually figure the home-team advantage is worth three points, the Saints went from possible 3-point favorites to 3-point underdogs by having to travel to New York.

``As a football coach, that is not the best thing for this team,'' Saints coach Jim Haslett said of the move to New York.

In reality, the Saints will have only three games they can legitimately consider home games all season. The team is based now in San Antonio and, other than the three games now scheduled for the Alamodome, New Orleans will travel to every game.

(True, four of those games will be in Baton Rouge, La., where the crowd will be cheering for the Saints. But the team will have to travel there to play, and it will be an unfamiliar atmosphere for both teams.)

For a team that had trouble winning even in normal circumstances, giving away points almost every week isn't exactly a recipe for playoff contention. But what Saints fans should fear most is what comes after this year.

The Superdome is likely history, no matter how cosmetic the damage is to the team's former home. Benson wanted a new stadium long before Katrina hit, and there's no way he's going to willingly go back to a building that is now symbolic of so much human misery.

A new stadium is also out of the question. Imagine, when much of the city needs rebuilding, the outcry if someone suggests spending hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer money to build a football stadium for an owner that really doesn't want to be there anyway?

It was just four years ago that Louisiana agreed to pay the Saints some $2 million a home game just to keep them in New Orleans. But even that deal was in trouble before the hurricane because, with tourism lagging, the state couldn't find enough money to put in Benson's pockets.

Under the deal, Benson would have to repay the $81 million he's already gotten if he took the team elsewhere. But all bets are off now because Benson could claim that he isn't obligated to stay in New Orleans when there no longer is a proper place to play.

Benson has given New Orleans every reason to be nervous about the future of the team. He kept silent for two weeks, then said little when questioned Monday.

``We're not going to worry about that today,'' he said.

Contrast that with New Orleans Hornets owner George Shinn, who was basically run out of Charlotte by angry fans but now seems to have found things to his liking in the Big Easy. Shinn needs a new temporary home for his NBA team, too, but says he plans to be back.

``Our objective is not to abandon ship here or to get out of dodge,'' Shinn told The Times-Picayune the other day. ``Our plan is to hope and pray New Orleans rebuilds.''

Benson's immediate plan, meanwhile, seems to be gauging the ability of San Antonio, where he has a home and business interests, to support a team.

If not, there's always Los Angeles, though that might mean he has to sell the Saints because the NFL would prefer local ownership. That shouldn't be a major hardship since Benson said earlier this year he had been offered $1 billion for the team.

On Sunday, the Saints gave the displaced residents of New Orleans some relief from the despair invading their lives. Sports may not help them find a new home or job, but if ever a city needed a team to do well, this was the time.

Unfortunately, they may not have long to enjoy it.

Because the next sound you hear will be these Saints marching out.

You didn't just use Houston as a gauge to TB's secondary....I mean, I couldn't have just read that...

You're right, you didn't just read that. All I said was that Houston said all they needed to do to win was shut down the run because Losman isn't capable of passing yet. They did shut down the run. They stacked the box and Willis did absolutely nothing in the first half, but Losman did. Once Losman started moving the ball on his own, they backed off the run, and Willis had major holes in the second half.

Is the Houston defense anywhere near as good as Tampa's? No. But it's going to take more than just stopping Willis to shut down the entire offense.

Tampa allowed an average of 160 yards on 27 attempts of passing offense per game last year. They also allowed an average of 1.3 TD's passing per game, and averaged 1 INT per game. Sounds somewhat similar to Losman's stats last week doesn't it? 170 yards on 28 attempts, 1 TD 0 INT's. If Losman gets that again this week, and he can with good gameplanning, then it's another win for Buffalo.

Odell Thurman

This is the newest edition the to revamped Cincinnati Defense, without a doubt he is the best LB to come out of the '05 draft. I can't wait to see this guy play.

I told you to watch out for this guy back in early july but you just casted him aside like he is just an average rookie LB, no one gave him the a look or made comments like ...

He's got big shoes to fill if he's going to wear #51 for the Bengals.

"DAMNED RIGHT!".

Thurman is on the small side for linebackers but he is quick and is one of the harder hitting players that I have seen since John Lynch. Odell is one of the main reasons why Cincinnati was able to shut down the browns running game. I'm not saying that Odell is pro bowler or better than Spikes after one game, I'm just saying, don't underestimate him.

Odell Recorded six tackles and one interception in the Bengals’ 27-13 victory over the AFC North-rival Cleveland Browns. Thurman’s six tackles tied him for the team lead and a 14-yard interception

note to Culpepper "you better keep and eye on 51"

is it just me, or are this week's picks not very much easier than last weeks?

roughsauce

Week 1 is always tough picks becuase teams change from year to year, and no one really know how they will perform until week one. Also after seeing the teams play in week one, you now have a better idea of what teams are where in the rankings. Its also probally a good idea to hold your comments like this post until monday morning, becuase come game time anything can happen.

picking tip: Atlanta at Seattle - trust me on this one
