I just played an online match and I have one thing to point out (after confirmation with some other players in other forums):

There is no written chat option for random match. You can only use preset messages which cannot be changed for random match with other people

Written chat option AND preset messages is in for FC only (unconfirmed by me yet)

By match you mean battle mode or co-op?

i mean co-op. i don't think there's a battle mode....?

there're also traps around which will explode and burns or freeze anyone nearby among others in some areas

Wtf. That's fucking horrible. I hope they change that for the US release.

i haven't tried out the FC system yet (i've only like 20 FCs added at the moment), so i can't confirmed the written chat option & preset messages for FC

Well...playing with friend codes leaves the ability to type messages right?

Why didnt they use the DS mic? Kinda pointless to have a mic built into your system and only use it once or twice.

I've been speaking to my old PSO-playing mates, and they are all FAR more up for this than PSU ...

I can feel an old-school PSO Reunion coming on! \(^_^)/

AFAIK, it hasn't been announced yet for the U.S.

Apparently the non friendcode online mode pre-made texts are in Japanese and English, so take that for what it's worth.

My friend just got his Japanese copy, and I got to try it out.

Wow. This game is awesome. Feels like I'm playing PSO on my Dreamcast except with shitty 3D. Do want.

It's really good DS 3D for what it's worth. Can't wait to play this in English. The DS sure could use an analogue nub for these types of games, though.

He played a couple of random games online, but he has already seen people with infinite meseta and health and various other hacks like turbo speed. I hope cheaters don't ruin the game for the rest of us. :(

:-\

C'mon Sega, don't mess this one up.

No way cheating of this scale can be avoided unless it was hosted and controlled server side. Id just watch who you play with

I played PSU at launch, but was disappointed.

Have the updates made it better?

One of my main problems was that they ruined the combo system. In PSO, you had to press the attack button at a specific point at the end of each hit in the combo to trigger the next combo. In PSU, at launch at least, you could literally just mash the button. There was no timing needed at all.

Also, magic was completely useless, unlike PSO, where magic played a big part.

And the overworld felt too needlessly big, though I'm sure that's not something they can fix.

They could have at least lessened day one cheats by encrypting the save file and using some data validation for memory values to avoid flashcart-based cheats. But due to the FC system I don't think they saw cheat-protection as a serious problem.

Due to some stupid design choices, WiFi on the DS actually uses a reasonable amount of resources. Combined that with a complex 3D game and you don't have much CPU left to compress/decompress voice messages.

The DSi fixed that, but the game needs to have a DSi-mode to take advantage of DSi features.

I still don't understand why people call the DS 3d shitty. game's like FF4, DQIX and this have gorgeous 3d.

side by side this looks leagues better than the PSP PSO, Blue Burst.

sure it's not as 'crisp' and the resolution isn't as high but the colors are much prettier and everything works together easier in this style. I love it.

A lot of the initial PSU problems have been addressed with updates and the expansion that was released last year. There is a new "just attack" system that involves timing in order to make a stronger impact. Techs/ magic gets much better at high levels. The overworld is still too large, but now, getting from lobby to lobby is much simpler.

Based on the impressions here, it sounds like I'll be importing this after the holidays. In it's many iterations from DC through GC, PSO is probably my most played game of all time--PSU didn't feel right to me, but this sounds like it'll scratch that PSO itch nicely.

Ambition of the Illuminus, the expansion, has changed a few things since launch. Regular updates have also affected the game heavily. Currently, hunters don't mash buttons anymore because the combat system has enhanced. There's a new system in place called "Just Attack." If you time the button presses just right you're guaranteed a critical hit each strike after the first with striking weapons. It even makes use of the hard attack sound effect from PSO and has a small visual cue. Then there's "Just Counter" that works for all weapon types. If your character blocks an attack (if it has a decent/high Evasion stat) you can immediately perform an attack that is a guaranteed critical hit.

I can't really talk about techs. I have very little experience with them in PSO and PSU. As for the "overworld" it still is needlessly large and the mission counters are still all separated. The planet/city layouts and the item synthesis/item selling mechanic are PSU's biggest flaws. And by big I mean HUGE.

No offense, but maybe you should have your eyes checked. A powerful prescription like mine should clear things up for ya.

Ah, wow. Thanks. Looks like I might be picking up PSU again. The overworld thing sucks (I just miss the small simply ship of PSO -- they could have expanded on that of course, but not like they did in PSU), but I might be able to look by that. The battle system bothered me the most, but it sounds more like PSO now.

Couple more questions (sorry for turning this into a PSU thread, haha):

a) How much is the monthly sub now? I forgot what it was or if it changed.
b) Is it hard to get into at this point in the game or no?

FYI, because of the different planets the missions are scattered and you rarely will find players playing the original missions (people generally call them PSU ver. 1 missions). Plus, those missions' rewards are terrible (almost never over 100 mission points and barely any meseta).

99% of the population play the expansion missions (those missions' names are in orange) because they have all the newer weapon drops, higher drop rates than the old missions (though, I think they increased the drop rates of the old ver. 1 missions) and the mission rewards are fantastic (specifically, Military Subway C, B, A, and S).

As for your questions, a) $9.99 a month and b) its easier to level up to the cap (150) now more than ever with the expansion missions (they also provide more EXP) and some S rank weapons are now really affordable in player shops. Should have been like that since the games original launch but oh well.

Also, I was going to PM you but I made this post in case someone else would be interested in this info. If you played the Xbox 360 version then your only way to get the expansion is off the Xbox Live Marketplace. Its currently 800 Microsoft Points; used to be 1600 when I got it.

Ah, thanks a lot. It does sound a lot better. Going to rebuy it this week.

And yeah, I had the 360 version previously. Sucks there's no expansion on disc. I like owning hard copies.

Was the level cap 100 before?

Man I actually like PSU when it came out. Im tempted to buy the expansion on XBL but i hate that you just cant cancel your sub. sometimes there are months when i am unable to play.

Guys, why are y'all talking about PSU and other shit in this PS0 thread? =/

More PS0 goodness, less of the PSP/PS0 wars and OT PSU babble please.

Man, wish i knew ups deliverys to residences after 7pm as well. While shoveling snow, I chased down the UPS man and asked him about my package. But I guess it wasn't in his truck D: The recent conditions have concerned me. But it's on time it says...

Well, you give us some more PS0 stuff to talk about and we'll get back on topic. :P

Mine has shipped from Play-Asia! :D :D :D

I am LITERALLY frothing in anticipation now ...

Welcome back PSO! All is forgiven Sega.

:(

i am up to lvl 30 now.

the bosses i've encountered so far:
dragon
bunch of snow yetis
gigantic octopus
2 parts robotic machines
bunch of spinning creatures
gigantic robot (formed by the 2 parts machines)

The order where you fight the first 3 bosses depend on the type of character you made (from what I heard).

in offline story mode, you will fight the story quest with whatever partners you have. for the sub quest, you can choose whatever to bring whatever partner you have , or even go solo.

there are also Colloseum battle. i discover this portal door, and i enters it and the next, i see a stadium arena (with spectators and all), and me and my AI partners were forced to fight the strong monsters gladiators-style. i was the only one surviving when the battle end, and got bunch of chests as reward after that. when i return to the field, my dead partners were revived with hp of 1. i've heard that its a rare encounter or some sort. some went through pretty far and never saw 'em, so i am not sure if they are only found in some areas or what.

strafing is in the game (just hold L and move left / right), and you can charge for stronger attack by holding down the attack button (you can move around while charging too), which consumes PP. you can do so for magic attack, but you will have to consume item to upgrade your magic level first. you can also rotate camera view left or right by holding X and then L or R

deeper into the game and you'll get to access the sewer in the town. a girl in the sewer sell low lvl magic and weapons, and an old man create weapons from rare drop (from what I heard for this). There's also a password input machine, but so far nobody have managed what will happen if a correct password is entered.

Yeah you can. Just call XBL customer support. I don't play much anymore but a friend of mine does that all the time.

As for PS0, I'm surprised there isn't more talk. People in other forums are already reporting rare monsters and all kinds of stuff.

Edit: PS0 sounds like PSO with the best aspects of PSU included (strafing and photon arts).

YEESSSS! :D

This is ALL i wanted from an update to PSO.

Everything else from PSU can take a running jump ...

Anyone know if Section ID's are back (Pinkal, Bluefull etc.)? I really liked how that altered the drops depending on the team-leader.

Okay, here's some general information about the game that I've gathered. I apologize if some of it was already posted.

-No Section IDs.

NPC battle commands
* "Free order" tells an NPC to freely go into battle.
* "Attack shift" tells an NPC to go into an offensive mode.
* "Shooter sight" tells an NPC to use long-ranged attacks.
* "Heal order" tells an NPC to focus on healing.
* "Follow order" tells an NPC to stick close to the party leader.
* "PB release" tells an NPC to use their photon blast.
* "PB chain" tells an NPC to chain their photon blast with the leader's.

-Guns don't use PP like in PSU, and they even have charged special attacks like melee weapons. Wands/staffs also have charged special attacks. And you can also fight unarmed like in PSO and use a charged special.

-Currently only basic-type Techs have been spotted. For example, Foie, Barta, Zonde, etc. To use Rafoie you simply charge the Foie spell. To level up the Foie spell, you have to find higher level Technique discs (just like in PSO). No info on the Gi-series of Techs (Gifoie, Gibarta, etc.)

-Leveled mags are drops in the mag. One person has noted that he/she found a Mag that had 23 power/striking already on it. It already had the Mylla & Youlla Photon Blast as well. (Mylla & Youlla description from PSO: A pair of bumbling twins that cast Shifta & Deband. Donating to this PB while dead will revive the donator at the end of the PB.)

-To activate a PB when your PB guage is full, press L+R. You can hold L+R and use D-pad to turn your direction to aim it. Or hold it to allow others to stack their PB's with yours for more power (like in PSO using multiple PB's would increase attack power and buffs given).

-Also Mags can now be fed any item including weapons and armor like PSU's partner machines.

-There are also lobby actions while in town by pressing L+D-pad, or L+R+D-pad for opposite sex actions.

-Monsters don't actually drop items anymore. Once you clear a room a chest appears which has all your pooled drops. When you break the chest all the items pop out but everyone gets different ones, so on my screen there might be 2 Meseta's, a Monomate and a Sword, but on someone else's screen there could be 2 Swords, a gun and 2 Meseta. Crates work the same way, when you break it a different item spawns on everyone's screen. No more lootwhoring and worrying about people stealing drops.

-You are not able to drop an item in the field for others to pickup, the only option to drop just discards the item into nothingness. But there is an item trade option at the storage/info NPC back in town.

-And the Story mode difficulties are: Normal, Hard, Super Hard.

Mine shipped, too. I'm tracking its progress via hongkongpost.com (I chose EMS as the shipping method).

I can't wait until it gets here. :D
