Official PSP Minis Thread

Just bought Age of Zombies, holy shit I'm loving this! The humor is really good and I love the art design in it.

I own 25 minis, and Age of Zombies is definitely the best i have played! Utterly fucking hilarious and good fun too

IGN posted a rundown of 20 Minis today:

http://psp.ign.com/articles/106/1065291p1.html

They passed harsh judgments on an overwhelmingly large portion of the group. Out of the 20, only 4 of them (Age of Zombies, Alien Zombie Death, Deflector, and Vector TD) were recommended.

Most of those reviews are old, I think just the story is new. I think mostly they are correct, but sometimes they are guilty of comparing the game to a pricier product on a different console, or completely not liking the genre.

Dynogems, for instance, gets compared unfavorably to Critter Crunch, which is twice the price and on the PS3. Critter Crunch might be better, but you can't play that on the PSP. Dynogems is a fun little game, I thought. A little frills free, but for $2.99...

And on the other hand, Route 66 seems to get trashed for simply being a hidden object game. Because you know, no one could ever find those fun or anything. Is it a great hidden object game? No. But its merits or demerits deserve to be judged as one, not simply hating on the genre. AFAIK, there aren't even any other hidden object games on the PSP (or PS3 even).

Bullshit! Rocket Racing is one of my favorite minis. I don't have to say this but ignore IGN's review, the controls fit the grinding style very well and the emphasis on grinding is extremely rewarding and fun when you get the hang of it.

I bet IGN could sure go for some Pac-Man CE.

Fucking stupid Namco Bandai. They've ported it to the iPhone, and iPad, and apparently it controls like ass, yet we can't get a version for us. If it's a licensing issue regarding consoles, make it like Tetris, keep it PSP-only.

Did anybody get the Hammer Wars game? As PSPMinis.com pointed out, it looks like a port or copy of HammerFall but I haven't seen any impressions on its quality yet and I would love to know if it's good.

Mostly disagree with IGN review of Dracula. The game is really good for a quick, bloody shooting match. I also like the music.

Other than that, good to see Vector TD get some press. It's hard as f--k, at least for me, and I've sunk a ton of time into it. I think I've beaten the first two levels. (I think. Not positive about the second one...)

I've said it a couple of times already, but Freakscape looks like a Klonoa from hell. That's always fine in my book.

But Critter Crunch is on the iPhone for 0.99?

You don't get a thumbs up just for being the first game in an underrepresented genre. There are 023984023834980398 hidden object games out on PC, DS, and iPhone.

But then, let's go ahead and beg Capy for a PSP port of Critter Crunch. Sony did its part in bringing over a version of the PhyreEngine that was used to get this game converted over to PS3, hopefully there's enough connectivity in the development suite of Phyre to make this possible and affordable.

In the meantime though, I pretty well like DynoGems in its own right.

And although I'm often temped by the great software and bargain pricing on iPhone, I don't have one and am plenty happy with my current carrier. So, I don't really care what other systems have, I only care whether what systems my PSP has and is getting are worth buying.

That looks a LOT like Sony's Beats.

It has that mechanic of tapping as things flow in at different speeds from the sides of the screen, but it has analog stick motions to it too, and for me analog stick play is woefully underutilized in music because it allows me to "flow" with the feel of the music rather than just tap to the beat. Plus, it's pre-programmed music as opposed to auto-generated, and that's a big, big difference. (I love it when a game does auto-generated well, but Beats sadly wasn't it for me... please port Vib-Ribbon!)

Yeah.

I think if you play "There's something better and cheaper on another platform", then nothing but PC games will get good reviews. I mean, PC Games have better graphics than basically every console game (at least top end ones). Should all console games get bad reviews for not having great graphics? Especially all Wii games? For ontrolling worse (as mouse keyboard is better than controller for FPSes and RTSes. Wii would do better here though)? Being more expensive? (PC games almost always cost $10 less)

But it seems fair play to trash games on the PSP for the same reasons. Sure, maybe the iPhone has a lot better options for a cheaper price. But I don't have an iPhone. So I would like reviews from a PSP owners point of view.

A review that says that Dynogems sucks because I can play Critter Crunch on the PS3 or iPhone when I don't have one of those doesn't help me. Or saying hidden object games suck because no one can find hidden object games enjoyable and I should just play them on a PC anyway doesn't help me either. Even though I own a DS, I am one of those probably needs the LL version, so that doesn't help.

An actual review of Route 66 might actually mention that the screen is very zoomed in, making it quite playable on a PSP. But they couldn't bother, they'd rather just trash hidden object games. They might also have mentioned the hint system is apparently broken. Ditto.

There are a lot of MIA Minis titles that were announced before launch. I kind of think (read as: hope) Sony is just saving a bunch of them for a relaunch.

Why wouldn't it be? They announced it as a Mini at GC last year. That's the last we've heard of it.

Well with the fact Minis are playable on PS3 might run into some problems. As Pac-Man CE is 360 exclusive on consoles. So it'd have to be like Tetris, where it'd only run on one platform. I'd rather they just make a full-fledged PSP PSN title and add some online functionality while they're at it.

BTW- Anyone else playing Freekscape?

I tried searching but couldn't find a definitive answer -- with minis can the save data not be transferred back and forth from the PSP/PS3 easily? I was hoping for some kind of cloud-type gaming, where your save is actually online somewhere, so whenever you have access to the web on a given device your stats/levels/etc are updated/saved...

...kind of bummer if no.

ESRB rated a bunch of "PSP" titles today. From the descriptors I am assuming minis titles.

Many were announced for Japanese release as the first games in its version of Minis. (I don't know if they play on both systems, though.) Oddly, Japan does not seem to have plans to release the crappy games we got from them except for the shooter (previously titled Earthshield.) These look significantly better than what the US got, but still, it's hard to trust after whack-a-ninja. Some are also following the DSi approach of taking old games and reselling them as minigames.

I'm not sure I would agree these look better. They look more in depth, certainly. But still pretty limited appeal.

Hahahahahaha holy shit at the one with the kid's head. Not to mention something that's supposed to help you talk to the opposite sex. Hahahahahaha :lol

Should mention that all of SCE's Minis of this week are only playable on PSP. Wonder if they have any multiplayer modes? If Sony can do this, then there is no excuse for no Pac-Man CE.

SCE Japan's "Minis" are not being treated the same as Minis here, though all of their games are also being released in America so they'd better start putting PS3 compatibility in there because that's jacked up to just ignore such a big part of the Minis appeal.

And as far as multiplayer, Sony has three "minis" programs so far. One is retro-style games, and that includes the Save Our Earth shooter and probably the brickout clone. The second is Byte-Heli minigame releases. And the third is "feel for two" games, where two players can share a PSP and play multiplayer together (often with players holding each side of the screen and pressing the D-Pad or PS crossbuttons to play. No link play, no online leaderboards.

Looks like Uno will be out next week in Europe, but no longer as a Minis title, but full fledged PSN title. Will have ad-hoc, and infrastructure multiplayer.

Slow pace, functional. I'm enjoying it, actually.

I only play single-player, so I've not done anything networked.

I'm enjoying it, it takes all of the frustration out of playing a real game. The AI is really easy to take advantage of. I've mostly been playing at night when the baby won't stay asleep.

Sounds like the perfect game for any new dad :lol

Its fine for what it is. No online multi but eh I dont care. My only issue with the game is you cant speed up the time. Waiting for dice to be rolled and figures to move can be boring after awhile.

This is the biggest problem. Skipping animations with X should be the obvious choice here, but the cheap/dirty nature of minis probably precludes that kind of polish for most devs/pubs.

(Half Brick being the obvious exception, of course.)

Well at least it is a step in the right direction!

They have a curious definition of "arcade" though. Pool, solitaire, concentration and slide puzzles are not really "arcade" games.

Anyway, for a pretty good actual arcade style game, check out Stellar Assault. I've been having a lot of fun with it. It's basically Star Castle with some puzzle elements added.

Basically the shields of the castle come in four colors, and your ship shoots four different colors. And so you need to shoot the right color to shoot that part of the shield. And then most of the shield segments have little icons that do something, some will take out huge parts of the shield, some shoot at you, some just give you points.

Probably my most favorite recent Mini, outside of Alien Zombie Death.
