Official Worldwide Nintendo Wii Launch Thread

Nintendo lied about having enough systems for everyone.

they've been saying over and over to expect shortages? Even if you have a hard time finding one at launch, I'm sure you'll be able to get one before xmas. Toys R Us might be your best bet, employees at mine have said they'll have at least double of the number they presold.

I called around last night trying to dig up some numbers on how many launch units stores were getting, as expected most of them would not say except for walmart who claimed that they were getting 20. When I talked to Target, I mentioned that walmart was getting 20, and they said we are getting way more than that but couldnt give out the number. Looks like im going to head over a few hours before they open and get a spot in line.
my guess is if you get somewhere AT LEAST 3 hours early, you should get a system. 4-5 hours to be safe... still sounds like a lot but considering you will likely have to wait in line for over a day (24 freaking hours) for a PS3, it's not that bad.

I figured I would head over around 5 am (opens at 8). I hope its nice and cold here in Madison to keep some people home :)

So, what's the official word on components again, in terms of at available at launch?

I've read so many different things in so many different threads.

worked for us on sunday (just to the east of you in MKE)

My group is camping out at Wal-Mart starting Friday night. I know we're retarded but we need Wii the second it's available.

Eh, I know how you feel.

If it wasn't for Casino Royale releasing, we would probably be doing the same thing.

You could probably start lining up an hour before it goes on sale and get one. Yes, you are crazy. You're spending over 24 hours lining up for it? I hope that was a typo and you meant Saturday night.

eh... this past sunday anyone who got there an hour early missed the pre-order (actually an hour and a half early). and that was for a relatively unadvertised pre-order. I would be really surprised if people got to stores only an hour early and got a system. not shocked mind you, but pretty surprised.

I dunno, pre-orders were like 10-20 units. There should be upwards of 40-60 units, sometimes over 100, on launch day.

I'm going to get on line at midnight, but only because of the crazy people lining up 24 hours beforehand.

I like how my 24 hour walmart is doing it for their 12:01 launch.

People line-up and starting at 10pm they will give out "tickets" which will let you come back at 12:01 to buy your Wii. That way you don't have to wait till midnight.

I'll probably go around 8-9pm and check out the line, if it's short like I'm thinking it will be, I'll stick around and get a ticket.

I think I'll do something similar.

Except the only Target near me that's getting over 100 units is half an hour away, and it's right near two others that are getting over 100 units, and they're all around my house (I'm dorming)... So I might be locked in to the overnight wait.

to give an update on targets, before I had my TRU pre-order I called oneof the targets that was getting 60 in our area (largest allotment for us) and they said they thought they were getting around 35. Now he didn't sound at all positive but it was a manager... just don't know how perfect that allotment list was.. good luck.

That's the other component of my all-night wait: distrust of that program.

I just want my damn Wii. I have a feeling I'm going to feel stupid when a bunch of people buy it no problem midday Sunday, but I'm not messing around

As if. At least if the midnight launch fails, you still have a chance on Sunday. Those people are finished if they cant get one that one time midday Sunday

Does anyone know which games use the Sensor Bar and which do not? If it's only for communicating how far the Wiimote is from the TV, it doesn't seem like most games will use it. For instance, I can't imagine Zelda will use that feature. But other games I'm not so sure. Do the mini games in Monkey Ball use that? Or Trauma Center? I would guess that Red Steel doesn't, but I have no idea if Rabbits will. Is there a comprehensive list?

I'm curious becuase I will be taking my Wii to my friends houses quite often. The system is so small I can practically fit it in my pocket. But it will be a slight (ever so slight) hassle to take the Sensor Bar as well.

Well... you're really gonna need it. You won't be able to use the Wii menu. AFAIK, there's no way to navigate the menu without using the pointer function.

Basically any game that uses the Wiimote as a pointer (including Zelda and Monkey Ball and Trauma Center...) will need the bar. The bar's small enough. It's about the same hassle as the power supply, but most likely lighter.

Tell your friends to get a Wii and just bring your own Wiimote.

Zelda definitely uses the sensor bar as you waggle for the win

Heh, that's part of my thought process... I see the midnight launch has a great chance to get it... if that fails, I can hit up the stores that open at normal hours. I'm lucky to have roughly 10 stores in a 20-40 mile radius that will all have Wiis. Oh yes, I'm getting one on Sunday. Hope I can find Zelda as well.

It's not only for communicating how far the Wiimote is from the TV... in fact, I don't think it even does that. The sensors inside the wii-mote sense if you move it forward or backward, the sensor bar that you put on your TV is for pointing functions, which a large amount of games are using, including the whole Wii interface. It's pretty much mandatory.

LA GAFFERS

Anyone going to Universal Citywalk? They're having a midnight launch party, and if it's anything like the DS one, they'll be giving out swag and having contests for games and such.

I'm just wondering what time I should get there if I want a Wii. I've got my Amazon pre-order but I don't think I can wait until Tuesday. (I hate Sunday launches)

"waggling" has nothing to do with it. zelda uses it for aiming. basically every game that uses the wiimote as a pointer needs the sensor bar.

It was a joke(the for the win part). you use the nunchuk to go into first person view and the Wiimote to aim by pointing at the screen

Well I'll be damned...

Thanks for the prompt response guys. Looks like I need the SB for everything except Excite Truck. Hope it isn't too much of a hassle bringing this thing around. I'm taking it to people who don't play games normally. I'm quite excited for Thanksgiving because of this. I'm curious to see just how easy it is to pick up and play, and if people who don't normally play games will have fun with it.

The sensor bar seems very easy to set up.

won't you still need the sensor bar for menu navigation?

it's actually not even twice as long as a ds lite

I just called my closest Super Wal-Mart - indeed, at 10:00pm on the 18th they're going to start handing out tickets/vouchers to get a Wii, that said, I would still plan on getting their HOURS before hand otherwise you might not get one.

the only BC issues I would imagine exist are the GBP, networking on the games that support it, and possibly connectivity enabled games (Zelda FS? FFCC?) Everything else should work fine, even maybe the connectivity games..
Those hook in through the GCN controller port, so I don't imagine there's any problem.

gamergirly said:
Why the heck is the controller so expensive??
Because it's a wireless, point sensing, motion sensing, rumbling, audio controller. And of course controllers make the sellers good money.

I called the Wal-Mart I'll be getting my Wii at and apparently they're (only?) getting twenty systems in. I'll be camping out as early as Friday night, maybe.

Well, my local SuperWalmart said the same. A minimum of 20 systems. That probably means that regular Walmarts will get 20 systems and SuperWalmarts might get more(but no guaranteed). I really expected at least 50 to 70. I hope I can get one

hmmm. that makes me want to re-think my plan and maybe get to my Super Wal-Mart Friday night also. won't need to camp out, but rather, inside. since they never close :)

p.s. indeed the sensor bar is very small.

I've done my camping already for that pre-order X_x Can't wait for Sunday. I can't wait to hear all the good stories or people securing a Wii too at Midnight.

My wal-mart says their "not sure" if they are doing the midnight launch?

Its not a 24 hr walmart, but isnt this nationwide?

If not, kmart it is...im thinking 9pm
