My favourite senior game character:


He's 35! A 35 year old character in a bubbly JRPG full of teens!

They still manage to make him look and sound ancient. The cut scenes set ten years previously have him looking around 25, but I suppose 35 in a JRPG is way past time for retirement. I mean, I'm older than that and don't look quite so different from my ten-years-younger self!

They do the same in XII- Balthier is about 23 but his dialogue makes him sound like a world-weary veteran that's seen it all rather than someone barely out of their teens, just to contrast with the 16-year-olds.

I suppose to the target market, characters in their twenties and thirties really are ancient

Well, since El Nido was politically close to Porre even before the colonization (El Nido's (re)discovery by mainlanders was by Porre explorers), it's assumed that they were allies in the war against Guardia. Karsh even says that, during that war, Viper "made quite an impact as the leader of the Acacia Dragoons and was promoted to general". Since he was already the leader of the Acacia Dragoons, he was most likely promoted by Porrean overlords rather than a hypothetical living father or defeated Guardians. Radius does seem to have regrets about the whole thing though.

Labyrinthia from Wild Arms XF - she is 34, which in the world of RPGs, is old... the middle-aged woman isn't at all a common RPG archetype, and she's a cool character too. A tactician, a powerful mage, but with an unassuming personality like a kindergarten teacher.
