Damn straight!
Although we are sending less athletes this year... I hope we get more medals (cause really... the ones who aren't going were only eating up the money that could have gone to the better athletes anyway, right?)

USA will dominate :)

EXACTLY!!!!

That is why the Olympics are boring. That and the fact that everything is gonna be run on a delay. So I can get all results on the net before they air.

CBC HAS THE OLYMPICS LIVE!

CANADIAN OLYMPIC COVERAGE >>>>>>>>>>>>>> USA COVERAGE

Hopefully we'll be seeing more of the goofball sports because NBC has a billion channels showing olympic coverage. I've always wanted to see a game of Team Handball. And Badminton. I want to see what olympic calibur Badminton looks like.

I enjoy watching, but I don't care at all about who wins. I'll watch some of the track and field stuff, and maybe swimming and diving. The former because I used to run track and love it, and the latter because it's similar in nature.

Whoa...the olympics? I totally missed the boat on THIS news. Maybe I should turn on the tv or read the paper from time to time.

I want to see that swimmer beat Spitz's record for most gold medals. The kid is a phenom. I watched him in the qualifiers, and he was beating people by almost 3 seconds. That's fucking insane.

Michael Phelps I think his name is, maybe i got the last name a little off...

Canada only won 14 medals in 2000? Yeesh! Guess they better stick to the winter Olympics. ;) Seriously, I thought they were among the top 10 at least.

Anyway, the Olympics are usually always interesting in some way. I like gymnastics and swimming the best. And rowing appeals for some reason. Be interesting to see if Greece gets a bump or not.

Funny thing is, i don't own a tv anymore, so it *is* news to me. If i hadn't read about it here, i probably would've found out while i was looking for torrents to download.

Is the CBC showing the olympics 24 hours a day?

If not NBC >>>>> CBC

I don't know about that. NBC's converage has sucked tremendously. CBC, I enjoy watching more. Showsmore, less talk, and less showing medal graphs/ratios. Supposedly, this time they're showing it on multiple networks that NBC owns. And they are going to show everything apparently from what I watched from their on air advertisements. I sure hope they do. Till then...

CBC>>>>>>>>>>>>NBC.

We're sending less because only those athletes in the top 12 of their respective sport can go.

All this while we send more freeloading fucking officials then athletes...and people wonder why the Canadian system is fucked up.

And anyone who thinks NBC's coverage even approaches CBC (or BBC for that matter) is a fucking idiot. NBC's farming shit out to like 12 channels just so some of the events can be shown as they happen, while they prepackage their coverage into the usual primetime, sickenly sentimental, rah rah American bullshit. Fuck NBC.

I just hope the Olympics can go off well...alas the Greeks will be taking it up the ass for years, and it's a case study as to why no country should want to host this bullshit spectacle (it's great to visit a party, but it's hell to host one). It's funny, one article yesterday called the Olympics the very best and the very worst of humanity...it couldn't be more on point.

Anyway, looking forward to the sprint races...the men's 100 metres is the best ten seconds in all of sports, and the electricity provided by the 4x100 relay races goes off the scales.

Interesting article from the Edmonton Sun about the current level of security...

It's hit and miss-ile

They sit there, two of them, 100 feet up on the hill above his venue.

Patriot missiles.

David Ford went through security yesterday at his venue and, other than looking at his credentials, they waved him through. Two Patriot missiles loomed large above him. And security didn't.

"It's weird," says the Canadian kayak competitor who is about to participate in his fourth Olympics.

"You look up at those two Patriot missiles - ground to air Patriot missiles - and you can't help but think about it.

"Then you drive in and go through security and it's like there's no security at all. Today they didn't even look in the vehicle. One day they're really strict. The next day it's like they don't care.

"At the end of the day, it's a little bit scary. It seems a little bit hit and miss."

David Ford is just one athlete. Most, he knows, will tell you how secure they feel here.

"We're athletes. Athletes feel invincible all the time," said the Edmonton paddler. "You assume the Olympics are the safest place in the world.

"Munich was a long time ago. Today's athletes don't remember. I'm 37. I was five when Munich happened," he said of the attack on the athletes from Israel in the Athletes Village in 1972.

Entering this Olympic Village the other day, Canadians report their accreditation passes weren't even examined. Two days later the security was almost the opposite. Maybe it's just a matter of dialling it up as the Games get closer.

Still ...

Greek air force jets patrol overhead, to be joined by NATO surveillance planes. There are a total of 70,000 Greek police and military members on duty. In all the bill exceeds $2 billion Cdn. All of the expense is for a reason.

"The security is going to have to stay vigilant throughout," says Canadian IOC member Charmaine Crooks of Vancouver who, like all IOC members here, doesn't go anywhere without a personal security escort.

"So far, so good."

(It has not been previously reported, but a solid Canadian source told the Sun that a homemade bomb was discovered one mile from the Athletes Village beside a power station on Friday.) [Let's hope this is just bullshit]

If you can ignore the, er, insecurity, it's Athens-a- go-go. It's otherwise A-OK from the git-go.

Maybe it's like a movie with negative reviews. Your expectations are so low, you end up leaving the theatre saying, hey, that was O.K.

"It's certainly exceeding everybody's expectations," says Crooks.

"Overall, everything has been very impressive."

The XXVIII Olympic Games haven't had many rave reviews on the way to this day but they're getting them now as the birthplace of the greatest show in sports welcomes the world.

At 9 p.m. here tonight Canada will hold its flag- raising ceremony at the Olympic Village and our athletes and support staff here are beginning to believe the experience, against all odds, could be exceptional.

Then again, one security screw-up, and it could, if you'll excuse the expression, all blow up.

"I'm thrilled it seems to be all coming together," says chef de mission David Bedford.

Ford is as good a spokesman for the entire scene as anybody who will compete for Canada at these Games.

"I've been here for three months since Christmas," he says. "I spent a week here in February, three weeks in April and all of June.

"In February, I didn't think they stood a chance. In April, I thought they were still in trouble. What has transpired here since April is incredible.

"A year ago people were saying these Olympics were going to be a write-off. There was every reason to believe that was going to be true. Now it's about to begin and I believe the enthusiasm is going to be so great it will make them one of the best ever.

"The Greeks have worked really hard to pull this off but there's an energy here now and I think a mindset that now is the time to rise to the occasion."

Just as long as those Patriot missiles don't come into play, the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad may end up being the surprise success story of all time.

Otherwise it'll be "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"

I don't really agree with the notion that terrorism is almost likely. I don't doubt there might be some random attack like in Atlanta, but there's such a huge difference between putting a pipe bomb a few miles from anything and actually attacking the Olympics themselves. To actually bomb or shoot up an event, or take athletes hostage would be so incredibly risky for any terrorist groups - sure you get the random wackos who are almost impossible to stop (see: Atlanta) because they'll do things like leave bombs outside security areas but I think the odds of any major attack are pretty small.

Besides, most large terrorist organzations see things like the Olympics are not the most tempting targets anyway simply because any indiscriminate attack could just as easily hurt your cause as help it. And any specific assault on athletes from a certain country would be so hard to pull off. Anyone want to take odds on a dozen guys smuggling boxcutters into the Athletes Village getting within shouting distance of any US/whatever athletes before being gunned down like stray Athenian dogs?

People were very nervous about SLC too, like that nutty anti-Olympic protester who kept going on and on about how a jumbo jet could crash into the opening ceremonies. Who the hell benefits from an attack like that? If you bomb the Olympics it's like bombing a big Festival of Nations and no matter what you're just as likely to kill someone popular with the ppl you're trying to impress as hurt a nation/religion you hate.

True...I think the worry here is that Athens is pretty damn close to the crazies in the Middle East, and it'll probably be far easier to get into Greece even with the increased security then it ever would be to cross the Atlantic. Plus you've also got the home grown stuff, and while that's relatively small potatoes it isn't gonna take much to set off the alarm bells. Well anyway, I just pray that nothing happens...last thing any of us need to see is live coverage of a section of people at the Olympic stadium getting blown to bits.

Well the terrorists aren't likely walking, driving, or swimming - so I don't think the proximity to the Middle East means too much. Aside from that the 'profile' of the successful terrorist organizations shows years of planning so if they are going to do anything they've likely been in the country for a looooong time and already know the loose parts of the security arrangements.

It's 5 channels, and who the fuck cares if they're rooting for Americans, it's a US station for god sakes. Of course they are going to put the best stuff on in prime time, does it really matter if it's shown 6-12 hours late? No one has given any good reasons why CBC is going to be better, just my opinion though.

CBC shows as much stuff live as possible, time of day be damned. And they show the events, as they happen. And they show the best athletes in many of the events, regardless of their nationality. Sure CBC shows a few pieces regarding some of the lesser known Canadian athletes. However they're not turned into blasted overglossed, ten minute productions like NBC loves to do.

It isn't like CBC doesn't take a special interest in the Canadian athletes either, but it isn't their sole focus. The problem with NBC is that it seems if the sport in question doesn't feature an American that has a chance of a medal, they don't bother with it. I think that's pretty narrow coverage for a country that has as many immigrants as it does. Luckily they do have four or five other networks showing stuff this year, so they should be able to catch the vast majority of the stuff, much of it live.

As for feeling the magic? I'm just concerned that the games are going to be a disaster. Drug scandals, security issues, and Greece literally working till the last few seconds to get everything finished. I don't know how much testing they've done with these facilities, but it couldn't be as much as they would've liked. Who knows how safe they are? Still, stuff like that is a seperate issue...as a sports fan I just love watching different athletes competing for their country, the best in their respective sports at the highest level of competition. I don't give a damn about the peace and love and humanity of it all, cause all of that is just a crock of shit (I hope there's an image of the Olympic flame fluttering in front of some patriot missles, just to drive that point home). But the competition and action that's provided by the Olympics never gets old to me.

I'll watch, and there are always some great moments in every Olympics, but most of my favourite sports are in the Winter Games so the summer olympics kinda sneak up on me. I'll tune into some baseball (sigh, we almost had a really good team going :() and check out the USA bball team to see if they pull their shit together.

The winter olympics is much more exciting than summer. Nothing beats curling. Nothing. And i really doubt we will see a terrorist strike. Thats just wishful thinking on the part of the media.
