Once-hyped games that are now completely forgotten

Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles The Crystal Bearers

"They're making a single player CC with an awesome protagonist that has gravity powers?"

Then you played it..

Oh...

Oof. Yes.

and more MMOs than one can count...

According to the last NCSoft quarterly report, Aion has actually doing better than Guild Wars 2 for all but 1Q17 (and the difference was slight, only about 1k Mn Won). Of course, that has more to do with GW2 failing hard than Aion doing better, but it's surprisingly stable for an MMO in it's 9th year. Not saying it's doing well, just that it's kind of surprising that it's still truckin' (though not in the way that Lineage I is somehow still making so much money it's obscene).

Every new MMO that wasn't World of Warcraft being celebrated as the next great "WoW Killer." Most of them you can't even play anymore because they folded so quickly, and the ones that are left are on life support.

A lot of them still have legitimate followings. Off the top of my head FFXIV is doing well, LOTRO has been going strong, ESO is still growing, Rift is back and fourth between being good and bullshit p2w, TSW just relaunched and seems to have come a long way, and SWTOR is a steady stream of income for EA/BioWare.

The ones that folded fast off the top of my head were WAR, Conan, and WildStar. All 3 had very real problems and the drop off in interest was completely justified. I actually really liked WAR and WildStar had potential, but Conan was a straight up bad MMO.

The hype for this was deafening before it launched.

"Have you seen Titanfall?"

It was supposed to be the COD killer according to some and the future of multiplayer FPS for years to come. Then it launched and the hype dissipated. Was gonna get it on PC when it dropped in price until I heard its online was a ghost town. Its sequel didn't fare much better either thanks to some bad decisions from EA.

Were people actually ever hyped for this game? Not sure but it's sure forgotten.

Really underrated game imo. I personally enjoyed it a lot more than I did say, Skyrim. Not really sure who owns the rights for it anymore (Rhode Island?) but I wouldn't mind seeing it ported to Switch.

Are people simply waiting for Civ VI GOTY before jumping on board

I personally am. That, or a good sale. I think the lowest I've ever seen it sold for was $30.

Last Guardian

Game gets multiple GOTY awards - the fourth most for 2016 in terms of critical selections, and including the notoriously choosy EDGE magazine - but GAF poster feels that it is now completely forgotten. Ok.

It will always remain a mystery to me as to why there is a subset of the population - here and elsewhere - that is determined that this game be considered a failure at all levels.

There is a weird amount of agenda in this thread in general. I get some of you didn't enjoy some of these games but I don't think the OP's point was to highlight games you "wish" you could forget but clearly can't.

A game being forgotten doesn't mean it's a failure. Where did you get that conclusion from?

The Last Guardian was my top 3 GOTY in 2016, I loved every second of it from start to finish. But after a week or so I already forgot about it. There isn't much to talk about anymore as there's no multiplayer and DLC for the game. It's a one and done game. It's a fantastic game but I'd agree that it's already been forgotten.

As this thread points out, there are tons of hyped games that get forgotten about in a flash, because fans want others to buy the game so that they get the next game from the developer, even better if you end up becoming a fan yourself.

I'm also guilty of shilling Yakuza on GAF threads, but luckily Yakuza 0 was amazing and a lot of people enjoyed it. Either way it's still agenda driven given I posted plenty of times about it. People are always going to do that for their favourite games.

lol, Wildlands and Fallout4, completely forgotten?!

Unfortunately I dont think many games qualify as being hyped (to me this means there was a decent amount of people looking forward to its release) and it just dropping off.

Even disappointing games like The Order and No Mans Sky arent forgotten, and get brought up consistently.

No Man's Sky is a "never forget" game, it's currently trying to relaunch itself and will be brought up every time a new proc-gen game is announced.

The Xbox prelaunch hype games like the "girl with the hammer" and "girl with robot pal" are good calls because they were part of the launch hype but I couldn't tell you if they were ever released?

I hate to say it. I really love the character designs & now that I own a Switch, I still plan to get it. Still, Splatoon 1 was also pretty bare bones at first & only became a success as it got regular updates. ARMS is still going to get that, but whereas Splatoon had no competition for 3 months until Mario Maker, ARMS is now up against Splatoon itself.

I hope it picks back up, though. It looks really fun conceptually!

(Speed Punks in the US)

Massively hyped up by the Official UK Playstation Magazine as a Mario Kart beater. Great game but I rarely hear it mentioned these days.

I remember that a good number of magazines were very excited about this game. Since it launched only a couple of weeks before Crash Team Racing I'm not surprised it got buried, though.

Sierra's Outpost.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outpost_(video_game)

"Initial reviews of Outpost were enthusiastic about the game. The American version of PC Gamer rated the game at 93%, one of its highest ratings ever for the time. It was later made known that the reviewers had in fact played beta versions of the game, and had been promised certain features would be implemented, but never were.

Indeed, many of the features described in the game's own documentation simply did not exist in the game at all. These included the ability to enter diplomatic relations with the rebel colony and the ability to build roads, orbital colonies, or the mass driver. Many of these gameplay aspects were later patched in, though in appearance only, as many of them failed to have any meaningful effect on gameplay."

I'm still bitter.

How can no mans sky be a forgotten game when there's a 20+ page active thread that's not the ot right on here on gaf itself?

I dont remember the name of the game, i remember it was a ps2 maybe ps1 era game i think , and the protagonist was bald and has a skull bone with horns craved in his chest, i remember all magazines talking about how incredible and dark was the game

Maybe it's because I just didn't lurk on GAF nearly as much then as I do now, but the general consensus I got was that if you were employed by a gaming website Titanfall 1 was basically the video game that was going to end all video games. But if you were an average Joe you looked at all of that hype and basically went

Titanfall 1 was such forced hype. While I actually enjoyed Titanfall I'm kind of glad the marketing push didn't work because of how disgustingly obvious the fake hype was.

but..... it wasn't fake hype at all. once the infinity ward thing happened and respawn was formed, there was a ton of immediate interest over what they would make, and whether it could compete with the beast they created at IW. for whatever reason, the community and interest fizzled after release, but it wasn't manufactured hype like Evolve or something

the best example is Fallout 4
latest

this game was hyped like it was the greatest game ever created, and few months after it was released, they forgot it like it never came out

no game has ever reached the insane hype of Fallout 4, not even GTA V

This thread has so many shitty examples, but this one takes the cake. Fallout 4 is still very popular game on streams. It's has 25k hours daily on Steam to this day. People still trash talk the game on many threads.
