One year on: Number of Steam for Linux content increases by 900%

One year on from its arrival in the Ubuntu Software Centre, Steam for Linux now offers more than 500 gaming titles.

In the twelve months since its initial stable release, the number of games available on Linux through Steam has increased substantially. Based on numbers listed by the Steam ‘Linux’ Store page, it may be as much as a mammoth 900% – jumping from a mere 50 titles at launch to more than 530 today.

After spending much of late 2012 in beta, the popular games distribution platform was formally released on Ubuntu back in February 14, 2013.

While stats from Valve’s own monthly Hardware Survey appear to show a continuing decline in the number of Linux gamers using the service, barring the odd uptick, user enthusiasm and improvements in support from big-name games developers remain on the up.

With the first Linux-based Steam Machines launching this year the pace of new arrivals for Linux is unlikely to slow down. Mid-2014 could be when we start to see more current, big-name gaming titles hit Linux at the same time as Windows and Mac.

Debian and Ubuntu developers were recently gifted with free access to Valve’s own in-house catalog of games, with the promise of gratis copies of future releases also included.

These are sad metrics to be excited about...steam for linux will never, ever make a dent in the market...ever :)

That really depends on how well Steamboxes sell. Steam OS is a linux distro and the games for it will be compatible with Steam on Ubuntu by default.

The mills of the gods grind in Valve time, yet they grind exceedingly fine.

Do you have Biff's almanac for video games? If so, get me the NPD numbers for Dark Souls II.

530 is not the number of games that work on Linux. 330 is. Sounds like the journalist did a cursory scan, looked at the games+demos+DLC number, didn't know what they were looking at, and reported it anyway.

Okay true but let me riddle you this...
If someone gave you a steambox and you were to use it...would you leave linux on it or install windows?

"Journalist" would be a fairly loose interpretation.

As impressive even 300 games are, there needs to be more "AAA" titles available. Hopefully Valve can convince developers to start making Linux versions of their games.

And yet the % of Linux Steam users is like 1% or less.

Edit: Also, I was looking at the survey results for February 2013... I am at work and sneaking looks at other things between working and... yeah, i have no excuse.
Removed previously mentioned sales percentages that were from a single Steam sale, not a total sales percentage.

But, according to Statcounter, Linux has almost matched Apple in marketshare. (based on actual web browser usage, not sales. Sales figures are always wrong on marketshare because most Linux distros are free and aren't factored into the final percentage. They only count PCs sold with the OS preinstalled.)

Windows OSes   64.38%
Apple OSes   15.42%
Linux OSes   14.67%
Symbian, S40   3.86%
Other   1.07%
BlackBerry   0.71%

Well, according to the Steam survey it's 2.02% with 1.71 of that being Ubuntu.
Mac is at 3.07%

Linux produced 16% of overall sales.
Mac produced 6%

It makes sense for them to start porting more to Linux.

Oh, if that's true then it's better than I thought.

For me it looks like this:

Oh, wow... yeah... ...just realized I was looking at last February's numbers... as in... February 2013... In my defense, I'm at work, lol.

Holy shit at the lost marketshare in the last year. I wonder if it's that the PC market in general is expanding faster or if they are losing Linux players.
