I wonder how Guitar Hero actually does in Europe. I know it's a monster hit in the US, and I don't even think it can technically be released in Japan, but in Europe I can't tell--it charts high in some countries and in others it doesn't do that well. And while it definitely has pretty enormous legs everywhere, its position on the chart often varies widely from week to week.

It has a big presence in UK stores, which is kinda odd seeing as it's not exactly a regular top 10 game here. Either Activision have been doing some big moneyhats or the game is just selling quite evenly across all platforms, making it a combined top seller. Or something.

Uhhh, Guitar Hero 3 has been out in Japan for about a month and a half now on PS2 and PS3, with the Wii version slated for next month.

It did fucking horribly, btw. 3000 copies sold or something like that? When I first saw it for sale, it was 11400 yen. When I bought it last week, it was down to 6000 yen.

its a big pressence cos the boxes are huge :lol
it's sells well though not spectacularly though the stores probably like selling it cos i'm sure they make a much bigger profit on it than on most games

Really? I thought the Benami Guitar Freaks game meant that MTV didn't have the license to do guitar games in Japan, but I guess not. The bomb there isn't too unexpected in any case; for some reason a lot of rhythm games do poorly there. Masaya Matsuura blamed it on HDTV lag, I think, but I don't really think that explains all of it or the US wouldn't be quite as GH-happy. Anyway, good to know these things!

Yeah... no obvious nod to Konami or anything either in the manual/box.

My theory is that Japanese people just don't want these giant awkward peripherals laying around their small-ass apartments, along with a general disconnect from the soundtrack of the game. They really don't know most of these songs.

Guitar versus bathroom scale...which is easier to store?

Bathroom scale? I am planning on storing it below the sofa. I have a guitarhero guitar too though and it's not that hard to put away for that matter.

They would be completely stupid to release it here.

Yes, I'm sure if they had a burning desire for GH, they would find a way to store the guitar. It's not *quite* as conveniently stowed as the Balance Board, but they would find a way. But really, they can just go to the arcade and play Guitar Freaks, which is old and familiar to them, with songs they know, rather than buying an expensive hulking box chock full of about six songs they've ever heard and a bunch of unfamiliar stuff.

I think the size of the peripheral is less of an issue than the music, to be honest. While I can see there being some limited appeal for the game in Japan (and to a slightly greater extent in Europe) it is very much a game that is primarily for an American audience with some appeal in overseas markets.

What surprises me is that Activision have not – AFAIK – explored releasing region-specific versions of the game. Surely a Japan-specific version - Guitar Hero: Guitar Wolf, say - would perform better than one stuffed to the gunnels with (mostly) US-centric tracks?

I would think so. People doing multi-region releases of music games would do well to look to what Sony's done with SingStar in Europe.

The World Ends With You didn't even enter DS top30? Was it delayed? late shipment?

Oddly DS/GBA games seem to sell more in the 2nd week in the UK. Cult titles are an exception to this though, so I'm not sure where the smart money is on this particular gem of a title.

Didn't see it in many B&M stores though. :(

(I got it, it's quite fun!)

And storing Wii Fit under the sofa = Genius!

In the Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland) it's actually doing better than in the US, if you compare sold games in relation to sold consoles.

The rest of Europe is at about 1/3 of the US sales, per console.

Well, at least in the Netherlands I keep seeing Nintendo branded Guitar Hero III commercials. But I don't know if they are airing those significantly in the UK.

Sony and Microsoft battle it out for GTA IV sales

Stock scarce as pre-orders reach record-breaking levels

Anticipation for Grand Theft Auto IV has reached an all-time high as Sony and Microsoft battle it out to become the console of choice for GTA fans.

Certain retailers have been offering free Xbox Live points and Xbox Live membership in promotion of the 360 version of the game, whereas Sony is set to announce a special GTA IV PS3 bundle. However, retail opinion is divided over which format will emerge victorious.

“Both titles have generated great interest on the Asda website, with strong pre-orders, and the PS3 version is selling three times that of 360, which is surprising and not in line with what we’d expect,” said Asda’s head of games Duncan Cross.

Comet’s games buyer Debbie O’Neill also feels the PS3 will benefit most from GTA’s release on April 29th. “We have great expectations and believe it is going to be a massive hardware driver – especially on PS3.”

However, HMV’s Tim Ellis has seen more interest for the 360 version: “Demand for both formats is high, but our 1,000 Xbox points offer generated a huge amount of interest.”

Many retailers have sold out of their initial allocation already – even the High Street’s biggest specialist GAME has struggled to cope with demand: “As expected, there is huge anticipation for GTA IV and we are working closely with Take Two to serve as many customers as possible,” said a GAME spokesperson.

“Given the demand, we are unable to guarantee customers who order a copy will receive the title on launch day.”

Well, given the RRP, I'm sure the margins are going to be pretty attractive, and it'll certainly help to boost revenue figures for the stores.
