I feel confident in saying that ROTR would have done better if Uncharted 4 was coming out now instead of March. Not being able to co-op the UC4 hype and champion itself as the XB1 alternative killed their potential hype train. It just felt like no one cared this game was coming out, including MS and Squeenix.

Publishers have tried to piggyback off more popular franchises before and I don't think it's ever worked out that well. Exclusive or not, people usually don't settle for second best.

If anything, I think Uncharted 4 coming out this holiday season would've sold even less Xbone's and made it even more obvious where the fanbase for those kind of games is.

Are you kidding me? Console owner here, mods for Bethesda games are the only reason I'd switch to PC. When xbox announced it, I briefly considered trading my PS4 in for the xbox just for that. If it weren't for that I already had some good games with the PS4, wanted No Man's Sky and Horizon, and came to my senses and figured if I do that I should go all the way and get a PC, it would have been a serious thought. I even pre ordered a xbox one pip boy edition just so I had that option and still get the pipboy edition.

I think he's saying people buying this on console aren't going to be swayed by mods one way or the other. Otherwise they would have a pc.

Don't get me wrong mods are a good get and a nice offer. I just don't think people who are buying on console and being swayed over who gets mods first

do you know how much Microsoft paid? saying it was a mistake without knowing if MS covered all sales they lost, how do you know it was a mistake?
Because SE spend shit tonne of money to reboot the TR franchise that it required to sell around 6-7 to become profitable. Then SE make the stupid decision and makes TR exclusive to the platform that TR sold the least on. PlayStation owners don't buy late ports on masses. PC gamers don't care about launch sechdules and will buy the game whenever it launches. SE used a huge amount of money to reboot TR and make it a household name. Unfortunately they made the bonehead decision and made the game timed exclusive. As far as I am concerned it was the dumbest mistake after the catastrophe that is the Wiiu sales and the DRM nonsense.
TR as a franchise has been weakened a lot with this deal.

tomb raider came out on the Friday and did nearly exactly a third of what the original tomb raider did over 3 platforms that had a much larger install Base. Not bad in my opinion.

Fallout is a beast

So? Tomb Raider is on two platforms and PC retail sales are close to none anyway.

So it was on 2 much larger platforms plus there were quiet a few pc physical around for that game. I worked in games retail at the time. I don't think it's a bad showing personally :) not for 2 days worth of tracking. And with 20 percent average on digital sales so far this gen that puts it at almost exactly a third of tr13 sales. The xbox one probably has one tenth the user Base that the 360 and ps3 had. Pretty good going I'd say

Well those are not good Tomb Raider numbers for sure. And even year later when all versions are out Square won't see TR2013 numbers for sure. They hurt TR IP with this exclusivity and lack of marketing. How bad we don't know yet. And they will earn even less money from PC/PS4 release because they will need to include all Season Pass content for base price, and in case of PS4 they will maybe need to lower base price to push sales.

I just hope that Square took good amount of money from MS.

We can narrow down the gap for Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The 360 SKU is below the Xbox One version of Assassin's Creed: Syndicate. We don't have the splits by platform for Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, but it is evident that the Xbox One SKU has to be below 50% which puts it under 8,500 units sold. Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox 360 accounts for 15% of total sales, so all versions combined are below 56,700 units.

09 (05) ASSASSIN'S CREED: SYNDICATE (UBISOFT) - 17,000 / 206,900 (-39%)

15 (07) PS4 ASSASSIN'S CREED: SYNDICATE (UBISOFT)
16 (17) 360 FIFA 16 (ELECTRONIC ARTS)
17 (24) 360 LEGO DIMENSIONS (WARNER BROS. INTERACTIVE)
18 (13) XBO CALL OF DUTY: GHOSTS (ACTIVISION BLIZZARD)
19 (16) XBO ASSASSIN'S CREED: SYNDICATE (UBISOFT) < 8,500
20 (09) XBO NEED FOR SPEED (ELECTRONIC ARTS)
21 (14) PS4 GRAND THEFT AUTO V (TAKE 2)
22 (__) XBO GEARS OF WAR: ULTIMATE EDITION (MICROSOFT)

Still don't understand why they didn't delay the game. Why the hell would MS launch TR the same day as Bethesda's Fallout, whom they have a marketing deal with? Must be a contract obligation with SE.

Especially when the majority of those sales came on a platform you didn't release the sequel on.

Can't say I'm sad about the RotTR numbers. I still believe it was a stupid deal that intentionally kept a game off other platforms and it was ridiculous to put it up against Fallout 4.

Next year, even in quarter 4, I can't see a world where I buy this at normal retail prices.

Assuming it can't be earlier because it needed the time, you have Halo, CoD, Fallout and Battlefront launching, you either slot it against one of them or delay until the end of November/December, which for whatever reason most publishers think is poison, or you delay to next year and lose out on "holiday sales" (two years in a row thanks to PS4 1-year clause) and have a new slew of games to compete with anyway.

Clearly MS/S-E thought Fallout was the weakling of the bunch. They thought wrong.

Even for PC release they will need to include Season Pass and that is 30$ less. And for PS4 version they should lower price to at least 50$. No matter what they are technically losing profit on PC/PS4.

LOL at $50 in November 2016. Even $40 would be an unattractive price point then. I'm also wondering if that is a hard date.

Holy shit @ Fallout 4 launch in UK. 12 millions shipped WW on day one was still waay too much, but damn it's going to sell fantastic anyway. Congratulations Bethesda.

Black Ops III came out on a Friday, compared to the other CODs which released on Tuesdays, but the drop is better than what I thought. Myabe it's PS4 bundles helping (like happened with Assassin's Creed second week), but still better than what I thought.

Can we have a comparison between first two weeks of most recent COD games?

Demise of the Tomb Raider

Is it really that easy though?
How will it affect the release schedule of pc ps4 nx versions?
Mess

I think it would have fared much better in Q1 next year, even if it meant a delay also of the ps4 version.

Now watch as SE concludes that there isn't a market for Tomb Raider and ices the franchise.

They already said it was a trilogy so the 3rd game is probably getting made no matter what. Even if ROTR flops there is an obvious reason why so they will try again. It is still one of their biggest IPs and best sellers in years. Wouldn't be surprised if the budget got cut though.

Well TR did as expected. For a multiplat to exclusive I don't think that's too bad but honestly I don't see the benefit for anyone in this deal.

I mean Square maybe for a bundle of cash but what's the point in investing in relaunching a franchise only to fence it in this way?

Timed anyway so I think that with future PS4 sales they will beat the first games first week.

Tomb Bomba.

This has to be one of the biggest IP mishandlings I've seen in a looong while.
The crazy part is, everyone not blind saw this coming. I'm sure SE are happy they got paid but man how badly have they damaged the brand long term?

To be fair, the deal was done around E3 2014 when Xbox One still had a good chance for a comeback.

I doubt it will do much at all on a post-Uncharted 4 PS4.

It launched on a post Uncharted PS3 just fine. The first game went down well so once people have access to it they'll buy it.

In the end this was a multiplat on the lower end sales wise launching on a system with a not very competitive market share. There just weren't enough people who played the first and now owned Xbox Ones; and exclusivity will not suddenly change the minds of those who have never bothered with the franchise.

It was early days sure.

But like LiquidSolid alluded to, it was always going to be a questionable decision to bet on an XB1 comeback wave that Tomb Rider could surf on.

TR is very strong in EU, and Square had to have known that XB1 is nearly on life support there except for the UK.

PAL Charts came early? And it's already at 5 pages? what the hell is going on?

So with TR sales in UK, I guess it's pretty safe to assume it won't be breaking into top 10s in most other EU countries right?

The rise of Fallout.
The fall of Tomb Raider.

One company knows how to grow a franchise the other just neutered theirs and needs to take notes.

I still can't believe that SE managed to reboot, sucessfully, a franchise that had been pretty much irrelevent for a few years and kill it in the space of one game.

That takes real lack of self-awareness and foresight.

It was not a late port on PS3 that is a huge factor .
I guess SE don't mind the ASP being even lower than the first one cause that is all that going to happen .

Well, unless Square Enix got shitload of money for the exclusivity they're probably pissed right now. And even if they're swimming in M$ money the future of the "new" Tomb Raider doesn't look good.

I don't think that SE regrets the choice from a short term financial perspective. However, I do think they regret it from a long-term IP building perspective. Rise of the Tomb Raider will probably be the least played entry in the series. If a series is to be succesful it needs to build a greater following with each entry and as it stands they'll be lucky if it gets past 75% of the predecessor. The third one really needs to be special but I think that sales will still struggling with this series going forth. Going exclusive and launching Q4 didn't help it one bit.

I bet S-E does regret it on a short-term cash basis. MS wont have paid enough to make the difference. We're not talking small differences, we are talking high tens of millions of dollars revenue. Unless S-E had some sort of minimum shipment clause (which would be lower than their expectations) theres no way MS would've paid that much for timed exclusivity.

Remember the worse S-E thought it would do compared to a multiplat release the more it would cost MS, and the less incentive MS has to do a deal in the first place. Neither side would've seen this coming, and both lose out.

Fallout 4 did fantastic in the UK. I'm honestly starting to wonder if it can top Blops 3 in November's NPD.

Terrible sales for Rise of the Tomb Raider. The launch date was a really obvious marketing miscalculation. This is one of those cases where you can place the poor sales performance on marketing. Crystal Dynamics created a great game, so it was up to the marketing folks to bring that game in the best way possible to the market. Now it's up to NA to save the title, but frankly, I don't see the game pulling in > 1 million on the One.

Holy crap I'm tired. Had to re-read the TR sales as I saw 85% on the 360.

Next game to be called Fall of the Tomb Raider then?

Yepp, she goes postal and has to be stopped. Don't get me wrong. I'll probably buy it straight away as it hits PC* but from what I gather it's still a snuff fest. So let her go bonkers and see what happens. It's about time they try to "reboot" her by then anyway.

it justed launched, and no one game is going to move consoles, PS2 did awesome with a 3 pack, FFVII, GTA and MGS, not all was exclusive but 1 year. Lets see what happens this fall. The prices are pretty close this time, but I still expect Xbox to win Nov/Dec NPD by a good margin.

Will EA be running ads for EA access during the movies? Else it'll be though a hell for XBO.

But yeah I reckon TR still has some sales in it due to the holidays coming up, depending on how the campaign follows. Not expecting much for it tbh but some more.

snip[/CODE]

Hmm, that split for the PS4/XBO DE. Seen those % before. Always assumed it was people regurgitating chartz guesses.

*Wonder how many will actually refuse to buy until it hits bargain bin prices:( Don't get me wrong. I'm not sold on this new direction for TR but I'm interested to see if it's something more or the Uncharted wannabeness is all there is to it. Bit yeah I don't like it when I see people refusing to buy above for above €10.

I'm guessing the tomb raider numbers must really be bad, and I am looking at it wrong. :/

Just a wonder, what would have been good numbers for tomb raider?

Halo 5 launched on a tuesday and did 150 thousand units. I didn't think tomb raider was any where near Halo 5, fallout or Call of duty in level of sales. yet 60 odd thousand isn't good.

Did we expect like 100 thousand or what?

It did launch on a friday too. compared to tuesdays for the others.(bar cod)
