PAL Charts - Week 47, 2007

Just for the record.

There seem to be some serious supply problems with Guitar Hero 3 in the Netherlands. If the same is going on in the UK, that could explain it's low entry into the chart.

I wonder how much Sega was really banking on 4 million sold for Mario and Sonic.

A respectable debut for Mass Effect, but it appears it isn't going to be the gangbuster hit that Bioshock/COD4/Halo/Assassin's Creed have been. Ditto for Super Mario Galaxy.

AC is really the surprise in all of this, especially with respectable legs after the first week of monster sales. If it stays in the top 10 through the holidays it could probably push 2 million plus before the end of the year ww.

I wonder if it had the same PS3 ad deal in the UK. It'd be surprising if 360 still had the best sales after that and would probably call into question the usefulness of anyone paying for that stuff.

what kind of ad deal did the ps3 have in the UK?

I think he is saying like here in the states, 90% (or so it seems) of the AC ads are for the PS3.

There was a strange thing about the Chart Track summary for this week, if you checked it when it was first posted on their site, it mentioned this number in brackets after the NFS sales

Now it is no longer on the site, I guess this was the actual sales for NFS this week and was mistakenly added to the summary and then removed when it was spotted ;)

Nice catch. Good to have a point of reference in there.

The usefulness is so that it can sell enough on your system to justify the cost and for future games. Ad campaigns don't make a 1mil difference in userbase go away though so the PS3 version outselling the 360 version would be impossible.

I think that AC PS3 sales are very respectable.

First warning sign that ME may not pull a Bioshock. Even though I love the game to death, I wouldn't be surprised if it only pulled 'OK' numbers.
I think there's far too much competition for gamer's attentions right now for that to happen. Plus the UK reviewers Edge and Eurogamer weren't exactly glowing about the game.

(83,032)

They have done that before - very nice catch :)

Was it the all formats combined sales (guessing it was seeing as they only use that for the narrative)?

We can use that to extrapolate an awful lot of things :D

Seeing as the PS2 & X360 versions are right next to each other in the chart, the PS3 version was 10 places down but much closer on the value chart & the wii version misses both despite being only 11 on the Wii chart I'd estimate a ratio of 4:4:3:1 (Ps2:X360:PS3:Wii) so as a rough guesstimate the PS2 & X360 versions sold around 27,600 copies. With Wii play one step behind I'd say that would have been around 22,000 and it's probable a similar amount of Wii were sold last week in the UK.

AC has had a huge marketing push in the UK at least - even extending to things like a full-colour wraparound cover on one of the Guardian supplements!

Good to see SMG locked in the top three again, and while it's obviously disappointing that it didn't debut at number 1 and that it isn't higher this week, it retaining its position is a hopeful sign that the game will have some legs.

Amazed that Big Brain Academy is hanging around so long, but I guess that's what an appropriate price point does - take note NoA, you muppets.

Megabomba for Guitar Hero III, though, and given the low debut position of the 360 and PS2 editions (both of which had the benefit of the game-only pack) it's no surprise that the Wii version doesn't appear.

Ubi has been pushing AC pretty strong here in Belgium stores too.

I'm finding MS market push of Mass Effect rather disappointing. Certainly not even close to Gears levels (let alone Halo). I wonder how the EA Bioware acquisition played into this.

cosmonautx, in italy ghiii wii was postponed, are you sure it was out in uk?

Yup - been playing it since Saturday night (annoying the hell out of my GF's daughter who really doesn't like that kind of game :lol )

360 big winner again followed by PS3, Wii not doing so good in software sales considering it's succes, Mario Galaxy isn't the huge hit it seems.

Edit: Ratchet epic bomb it seems. Following the trails of Rare's efforts on the 360, these family friendly games don't sell on hardcore consoles. Maybe it sales , like those of Viva Pinata will pick up when these consoles are 199 or something.

Developers don't look at how software does compared to the userbase. They look directly at software sales.

This data is useless without actual numbers, how can people say AC on PS3 "has good numbers"? It may have sold 1000 units for all we know, same goes for Mass Effect. I bet there is a big gap in the numbers between the top 3 or 4 and the rest of the list but that is not reflected in this table.

Also people are knocking the value of advertising but I doubt that AC would be the number one game if it was not for the bloody impressive ad (even if the ad is a Sony one and the 360 version is top!). There has not been a single TV ad for Mass effect for example.

NFS sold 83,032 across all formats. See this thread for details.

And yes, large gaps are not reflected in ordinal data, but somehow we survive.

The only thing useless is this post you just typed up....

Just pointing out you cant draw any conclusions from the table really.

NFS sold 83k? Thats an impressive number for 2 days sales in the UK alone

Nope but we can randomly speculate :D And it's accurate weekly data which beats both Japan AND the USA (waves his english data-monkey flag).

Impressive but as the blurb says less than the recent NFS have done. No big shame as the series has been in decline for a while according to fans I know.

Unreal Tournament 3 utterly bombed then, not even in the top 40. I wonder how the PS3 version will fare next year.

Crysis has buggered off too unsurprisingly.

Guitar Hero 3 didn't chart as high as I thought it would though. Interesting to see the 360 version at number 15 and the PS2 version all the way down at number 29 (no sign of the PS3 or Wii versions for that matter).

Why is that then? I stand by what I said!
How so? These charts show what is selling and what isn't selling. You don't need exact numbers to draw conclusions on what's exactly happening.

Unless of course, Europe software numbers and what matters no longer matters?

For example, using the last 4 weeks chart we can safely assure that Metroid Prime 3 has bombed in Europe.

Next week and the week after should be better for a lot of the newer software as payday (for those who are paid last working day of the month) will have been and gone.

I'd of picked up Guitar Hero III but I couldn't afford it! Played it at a friends house on Saturday (my first Guitar Hero game) and I can't wait to pick it up now.

Ok MP3 defo bombed we can tell that much, but how can you tell if a game is doing good numbers, simply because it made the top 10? i cant draw the same conclusion without knowing how many units is required to make the top 10.

I suppose the fact that the number 1 PS2 game came in at number 9 probably shows this is the last year for the platform in the UK and that its installer base counts for not a lot right now.

There is some legitimacy to what you're saying, but people will ignore it. However, we can still draw some information from the charts. It's just hard to say what's really doing good, when there are no numbers.

For instance, sometimes in Japan, a game will chart #1 while at the same time selling significantly less than games that have charted #1 in the last month. Thus, the games that chart lower than #1 aren't doing well comparatively to other top 10 charters.

Quick question.... Is bundled software tracked by chart track?

If the software is unofficially bundled or mix&match bundled like PS3 Resistance or DS Brain Training, then definitely. Not too sure if other types of bundled software is tracked in the weekly charts.

Bombed by modern or international comparisons, but it has sold MUCH better than the first two games did in the UK so is a relative success.

Ronok said:

Think Barcodes for the UK chart. If you scan it separately it counts separately - so Wii Sports = no sales, but Motor-Storm taped to a PS3 box does count. Thinks that are officially bundled in but scanned separately like certain Hardware deals still count separately which is why it is done like that here.

Assassins creed is surprisingly sticking there. I'm also surprised that Need for speed won't be christmas no1. Plus Mass effect isn't the big game I thought it would be here, unless the top games are all selling really well not far from each other.

NFS will still be a good bet for Xmas number 1. Think it was MoH that got it last year - it's always some EA crap... Brain Training would be a nice outside bet - a 2 year old game as Xmas number 1 would be a big punch to the face of the annual update industry actually so a Very Good Thing..

I'm happy to see NFS:PS enter at 'only' number 10. There is some justice in the world, regardless of what TeamXbox may think, or try to put in words.

Surprised to see Guitar Hero 3 so far down the charts, but given the price of the package I think its something that the under 16s will be getting on their Xmas lists this year. I think it'll continue to slowly burn up the charts as we get towards Happy Present Day.

Kane & Lynch, unimpressive, but by most accounts it is all it deserves.
