PAL Charts - Week 48

CoD Fries The Competition
01/Dec/2008

The Entertainment Software Top 40 reveals that three-quarters of titles listed have increased their sell-through over last week – one of the biggest exceptions is Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ (-30%), although the title still sits on top of the pile for a third successive week.

Both of last week’s big new releases climb 2 places this week with EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Undercover’ up from No4 to No2 (+35%) and Eidos’ ‘Tomb Raider: Underworld’ up from No9 to No7 (+12%). EA also take No3 with ‘FIFA 09’ (+12%) dropping one place to accommodate the rise of ‘NFS Undercover’, with Nintendo’s ‘Mario Kart Wii’ (+17%) also dropping one place to No4. Nintendo climb one place to No5 with ‘Dr Kawashima Brain Training’ (+28%) and Konami climb 2 places to No6 with ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2009’ (+21%). No7 is the aforementioned ‘Tomb Raider: Underworld’ (+12%) and climbing 2 places to No8 is Nintendo’s ‘Wii Play’ (+3%). Activision Blizzard climb 2 places to No9 with ‘Guitar Hero: World Tour’ (-1%) and the only new entry this week is Sony’s ‘Resistance 2’ on PS3 at No10. This is the follow-up to one of the format holder’s original launch titles ‘Resistance: Fall of Man’ – however launch week sales of ‘Resistance 2’ are only around two-thirds of the original.

Resistance 2 only 2/3 of R1 sales in first week?? I guess Resistance 1 wasn't that popular with gamers who bought it?

It's pretty much a completely different game now, at least the multiplayer.

I loved the first one, and it's the reason I bought my ps3 a couple of months after launch. I think the beta hurt the game, I didnt even bother to buy it after I played it.

Was Fallout 3 (360) on sale last week? It jumped up 11 spots.
Yes, Game has/had it on offer at £27.99 along with the PS3 edition (And are selling thier exclusive Special edition at the same price).

Laughable.
I don't think we should laugh any more. SCEE aren't even using abstract ads any more, they have just not bothered advertising anything other than Fifa and PSP.

Huh, Resistance 2 had a pretty major ad before Quantum of Solace in my cinema. There was an abstract PS3 ad as well.

Fixed to be fair.

Shame about Resistance 2, if the people who lined up at launch to buy PS3 prefer COD then it has little chance of reaching the sales of the last outing, even before bundles are considered.

This months DVD and blu ray review magazine have a 4 page "newspaper" pull out ad for Resistance 2

Sony can't buy a break. I'm not a huge fan of the game so far but I am new to the PS3 world.

I figured it had a Gears of War kind of following.....

edit: Halo, not GOW kind of following

the original did have some legs however, mostly due to being the platform holders title, but of course there is no reason to suspect that Sony won't use it in this way again.

Sad to see stock screw ups messing with game launches. I saw a couple of good adverts for R2 in the cinema and figured it was going to have a pretty impressive showing.

Has anyone else in UK GAF noticed that Microsoft have started pushing ads for Lips and You're in the Movies? Seen quite a few adverts for both products......and none for Gears2.

I think it had legs because the PS3 had little else to buy, clearly the fact it sold less than R1 despite the increased install base must be very disappointing for Insomniac and Sony

Within walking distance of Zavvi in those Cities there is 20 other stores that will have stock mind.

I saw it in Game, Gametstaion and HMV at the weekend
Ah ok, maybe the stock shortage didnt affect the overall sales of Resistance 2 that much then. I wonder how Resistance 2 will keep on selling in the upcomming weeks :) Thanks for the info! :)

I dont know about in the UK, but i actually saw 1 commercial each for both Lips and You're in the Movies today on norwegian television. The Lips commercial was the one with the walking mouth singing some A-HA song and the You're in the Movies commercial was the one with Burt Reynolds. I cant recall to have seen any Gears of War 2 commercial on TV here, but i dont really watch that much TV (i would guess that i watch TV about 1 - 1.5 hours a day or so).

On online forums for sure, but we must remember that COD4 outsold Resistance 1 by the end of the holiday period 2007 on PS3 alone. That's much more of a "Gears-like" following.

Am I missing something here? it charted pretty well.

I'm not saying it's going to sell poorly, but it's obvious it's not going to outsell COD:WaW (on PS3 or 360), or Gears 2 as some had predicted, especially without a major marketing push.

It may not even outsell the original. The holiday period will give it very productive legs if it stays in the top 30, but Resistance 1 had the launch period advantage where it was pretty much the marquee FPS for months on end, with only COD3, RSV, FEAR, and The Darkness as competition until COD4 came out.

Yep MS seem to have an ad almost every ad break, no gears or banjo ads though!!!

I was talking about pack-ins mostly.

On a slightly different note... Wii Fit / Mario Kart have to have broken records for the total number of weeks charting by now, surely?

If i recall correctly, i think that i already saw a PS3 + Motor Storm 2 bundle. I have no idea if it was some official Sony bundle though or if it was just a store who had some sales promotion or something and included Motor Storm 2 as a separate game from the PS3 itself (as in that the game itself wasnt packed in the PS3 cartboard box). Unfortunately i dont remember where i saw it, so i cant check again, but i am pretty sure it was on an online webstore atleast.

Maybe, but what about Brain Training for the DS? Didnt that chart for a year or so? :) And it is even charting this week :)

One of the biggest lessons we've learned this generation is surely that marketing to avid gamers is pointless, as us avid gamers know what we want already.

So you spend your marketing money on people who don't read GAF and kotaku, basically. Or games mags. Or reviews in the newspaper, even.

(Although evidently, that makes the avid gamer eventually feel like they're being ignored and they start crying about casuals getting all the love).

Lips missed the Top 40 by a bit, it was below Left 4 Dead in the 360 charts.
It actually went up 8 places in the 360 chart this week, so maybe it'll stick around there for a while.

Yeah, it's a shame the You're In The Movies ad is really shit, though.

Yep, lot of airtime for both. The YITM ad does make me chuckle.

Have seen an assload of The Last Remnant ads as well, considering how much airtime its had, and the no-show in the Top 40 again, it must have been the most ineffective advertising campaign ever.

Can we not start this again? At least leave it until the next major holidays so one of you can argue your point with some vague form of evidence.

Someone will probably find the exact weight for each place on the chart. However it gives an extremely high weight to top placers on the chart, since when there are new releases they usualy sell way more than the places below them... it is not to be considered as a good measurement of the amount of software sold however since the difference in sales between places on the chart varies a good amount between weeks. Take it with some salt.

In Holland too. MS is sponsoring a big Idols-like show. Lips-ads everywhere.

Wow i don't know what to say other then that was pretty pathetic, the simple fact is we are well into the christmas shopping season when gifts being brought for kids are at there all time highest so wii sales should go up the nearer you get to christmas. The fact is despite christmas sales affecting the usual trends, during half term week wii sales on the weighted chart were up from the previous non school holiday week and then down again the following week after the holidays ended yet again following the trend i've pointed out all year long which some people have a ridiculous problem with, and right now on the chart the wii is no where near where it was during the school summer holidays, but hey thanks for sharing. :lol

A lot of 360 games seemed to rise up the charts, also a bit of a drop for littlebigplanet, plus what happened to lips? seen a few ads for it.

this is correct. Depending on the week, a #5 one week might be selling less than a #10 from the previous week, or the next week.

R2 sold 2/3's of R1 first week, so thats that, doesnt matter what number on the chart is.

This just confirms LBP as best selling holiday title for PS3 world wide.
