PAL Charts - Week 49, 2007

Why was this even a surprise though? It had "bomba" written all over it.
Not really. This is Naughty Dog.

For the record Heavenly Sword entered at number 5. (In the same time period)

I'm surprised at Uncharted's performance given that it is charting highly on almost all on-line retailers.

Also wondering what has happened to Sony's £1m Uncharted UK marketing campaign.

Poor Uncharted. I've seen the adverts on tv a bunch of times and it looks like a pretty decent game that would appeal to the same people that might enjoy a **** Raider game (a series that does very well here). I don't get how it could bomb like it has. Poor Singstar too.

Yeah, but you have to pull much bigger numbers to chart respectably at Xmas time. There was no ad presence for the game, no instore presence, it was a new IP and most PS3 owners had just got there single player fix with Assasin's Creed.

Guys, Mario Party 8 was Half Price in Gamestation last week, hence the rise in sales. See it drop next week.

Sad to see Uncharted down there though.

Great to see Mario and Sonic at top, advertising is doing a great job

What I find interesting is that Rayman 2 had a better opening than Uncharted. A third-party Wii title selling better than a big first-party PS3 title? Uh oh...

WOW, this was a sucky week alround.

Uncharted disappointing start, Singstar started even worse then Ratchet...

Mass Effect dropping really fast.

PS3 version of FIFA08 rises with no reason?

Yeah. :(

I didn't expect Uncharted to have a huge debut, but ouch that's lower than I thought. Always disappointing to see good titles debut that low.

Somebody please explain where Viva Pinata came from. For one of the 360's lowest selling games, how could it be sitting right next to Uncharted which was recently released? And where is Ratchet and Clank?

I am as surprised at you, tons of online retailers have it in their Top 5 selling games, and a lot of them are even selling it for £35.

As for the marketing, the game has been heavily advertised on TV, along with SingStar.

I don't understand why in every PAL sales thread we have people questioning Sony's advertising. Every single one of Sony's big releases for this year has had its own dedicated TV ad for it.

In the UK at the moment, there are also a ton of commercials for Wii games (be it Nintendo, EA Wii games or RRR2), not so much for DS any more, a ton for PS3 games, and EA's NFS commercial is on just about every ad break on Sky Sports. The only company not currently advertising on TV is Microsoft. The last 360 commercial I saw was about 2 weeks ago, and that was just that 'If everyone can play, anyone can play' commercial from the US.

Bundles, same for Fifa 08 on PS3.

Bundles and budget sales I would imagine. Didn't even notice that R&C wasn't there at all!

Singstar bomba.

What did anyone expect, really?. As I've said countless times, Singstar PS2 was a success because a) it was on PS2 and b) even in a bundle it was a cheap (and fantastic) karoke machine. Many of the casual crowd have now moved to Wii or are sticking with their perfectly adequate PS2 versions of the game.

UK was never Singstar's biggest market though, will be more interesting to see how it performs in Scandinavia and as the price of the console lowers.

Most 360s sold are bundled with Forza, Viva Pinata and an extra controller. My brother just bought one and that's exactly what he got with it for the usual RRP.

blame sony. uncharted cost 45 pounds. no wonder its first party games are tanking whilst cheaper third party games are selling well. also take a look at online stores, a cheaper uncharted is selling well

I know in the US we are bombarded with PS3 ads during NFL games and other high def programing.

If you watch any kinds of sports programming here in the states, you will see a fuckton of ps3 ads.

Pretty much. I don't watch many satellite channels, generally stick around the 1-5 with a bit of the occasional Dave (for Alan Partridge) or Sky One thrown in.

However, I don't get why MS aren't advertising at all here. They were the ones who talked constantly about how important the 2007 holiday season is, and yet now we're here and there's barely any adverts. Perhaps they're saving their marketing budget to compete with Sony's AAA 2008 line-up - let's be honest, they'll need it.

Oh Mass Effect, thee does not deserve this treatment : [

Yeah, I promoted the fact that Mass Effect was going to get a push like Gears did, but with Bioware going to EA, I'm assuming something has changed and the push really isn't there. Then again, I think the Assassin's Creed ads are the best for a single game this Christmas season. Halo 3 is Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 has also risen to the forefront with spectacular sales. Not a lot of money to go around for a lot of people.

WTF @ Mario Party 8. Bundles?

£17.99 in Gamestation

So popular they were told by Nintendo to stop the promotion half way through the week as they had sold way over the expected amount! :lol

Semi-related: Has there been a Buzz! game announced for PS3?
yes
Buz!TV or something with some outstanding features like every firstparty ps3 game (except lair :D ). Seems like ps3 does not sell as it should.

Yes, same format as Singstar. Buy the Blu Ray and DLC for content updates.
I really don't think this DLC idea, as cool as it sounds to us, is right for the audiences of these games.. The average Singstar/Buzz player just wants to put in the disc and play the game, and with all that space on Blu-Ray why shouldn't they?

Mario and Sonic is third party too (although obviously Mario has something to do with it's success)

Chart Track's take:
‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ wins a dramatic sprint to the line this week, gaining 6 places to reach No1 and beating the Christmas No1 favourite EA’s ‘Need for Speed: ProStreet’ in a photo finish with only 330 sales separating the two.

The Sega published Wii-exclusive title claims a personal best weekly sales figure, up 39% on last week, making it far and away the best performing Wii game over any 7-day period. Sega’s All Formats gold medal win can be seen as ‘wind assisted’ due to it being a major part of several Wii retailer bundles. It is the first Sonic No1 since ‘Sonic Mega Collection Plus’ in week 5 2005 and the first Mario No1 since ‘Super Mario Sunshine’ on Gamecube in week 40 2002. The All Formats Top 5 is very competitive this week with just 8,000 units separating ‘Mario and Sonic’ at No1 and ‘FIFA 08’ at No5. Activision’s ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ proves that it’s not just Wii games that are enjoying the Christmas run-in, up from No5 to No3, boosted by a 45% increase in sales of the Xbox 360 version (No1 in the Xbox 360 and PC Charts). EA maintain 3 games in the All Formats Top 5 despite ‘The Simpsons Game’ dropping one place to No4 while ‘FIFA 08’ also falls one place to No5 even though its sales are up 18%.

‘Sonic & Mario’ is not the only game to benefit from retailer bundles as ‘Mario Party 8’ makes it two Mario games in the Top 10 (four in the Top 40), climbing from No27 to No10 and Sega’s ‘The Golden Compass’ enters the All Formats Top 40 for the first time since its release 2 weeks ago, sales up 220% thanks not only to bundling but also the release of the film in cinemas. The effect of Wii hardware bundling can be seen further down the chart as Ubisoft’s ‘Rayman’s Raving Rabbids 2’ enters the Top 40 for the first time at No24, while EA’s ‘The Sims 2: Pets’ re-enters at No32. Three new games make this week’s All Formats Top 40 : ‘Link’s Crossbow Training’ which comes bundled with the Wii Zapper gun accessory at No27 followed by Sony’s new PS3 IP ‘Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’ at No28 and the first Pokemon game on Wii ‘Pokemon Battle Revolution’ scraping in at No40.

yep.. haha.. i was surprised when i went into work and Mario Party 8 got replaced by PGR4 i think

:P

Yesterday some lady was complaining on the phone about why Mario Party wasn't in the half-price deal anymore and why Gamestation was still advertising the deal on TV.

I saw a Wii in CEX for £290 today. That's £100 more than I spent on mine a year ago!

If the supply situation in the UK is that bad that they're pulling adverts, I wouldn't be surprised if software in subsequent weeks suffers for it... obviously, there'll still be people buying Wii software as presents for both themselves and others, but I think for really high results, they need that hardware moving too.

Having said that, the story about them pulling ads did seem a bit odd to me, because for weeks I'd seen signs in shop windows saying "Wii console not in stock - please call in for details of our next delivery" and things like that -- but they disappeared recently. I was in HMV just the other day, and they'd just got a shed load by the looks of it. Sign outside saying they had them, people crowding the Wii section inside. So maybe they just pulled the ads because they know they don't need them?

its not that theres no wii's its just the stupidly vast amount of them that are being shipped are all being snapped up in no time at all and usually in overpriced bundles with average games (all the ones in game are being sold with amongst other things mario & sonic, no surprise its number 1)

One application they're quoted on is like a triva game of the year quiz, if you have family around over the holidays they can put out a trivia-OTY quiz which they simply couldn't do with a DVD release because code has to be finalized month's before the actual year end.

I think it will be a hit.

Maybe when people are finished with Assassin's? That sold well on PS3 and is relatively long considering most people will play a couple of hours a week.

That's not helping. People shouldn't have been buying that unfinished tripe in the first place.

WOW - this is the FIRST EVER Wii number one game in the UK - in the real official chart, not the split out units chart that usually gets OP'd here (which is better for some things but not others). And it's Sonic Vs Mario. Smash Bros better get ready to sell like hot cakes and is now a dead cert to have Sonic on the cover.

Big surprise is Pokemon Battle Revolution at number 40?!! When the DS games entered at number 1/2 this is a big big problem for the Pokemon franchise's non portable future and likely the reason that it's staying DS only for the main games.
