Persona 5 Famitsu details

I honestly do really hope they're not going to turn Persona 5 into an eight year event.

I loved the Persona 4 characters. They were fascinating and complex and, at the end of our journey together, they felt like actual friends in their own, weird, digital way. I loved them so much that I bought everything with them in it afterward, exactly as Atlus hoped I would.

And now I kind of hate them. I am so sick of them. I am sick of how Chie's single defining personality trait is that she likes meat. I am sick of no one remembering any of the lessons they learned inside of Persona 4 simply so they could retread those lessons again in later games. I look at them and I realize it has been eight years and I am kind of sick of looking at them, to the point where I'm considering whether I even really want to bother playing Persona 4 DAN.

I want to like Persona 5's cast without the feeling of dread that Atlus will eventually shove them in my face to the point where I no longer care.

Also, does anybody know if we'll be able to play P5 in NA with the language set to Japanese? I feel like that would be the best way to experience the game.

The best way to experience the game (which is super Japanese) would be Japanese language and Japanese text (and without a filter) I would think, if you can manage.

In any case, your chances of getting English text in the Japanese version is almost zero. Your chances of getting Japanese language in the U.S. version is slightly better - it seems like Atlus USA has been putting feelers out, but they also chose the worst possible solution to localize Stella Glow, so there's that.

Well, ironically, P4D is the one spin-off which addresses what you're talking about regarding the characters and how they were depicted after P4.

On that note of Japanese Audio track, why is it that not all Japanese games that get localize include the text as well? I think I probably know the answer to that question, but if anyone would like to clarify that to me, I'd appreciate it.

Games are cheaper outside Japan (though this may not be as true now with the weak yen) so if you have Japanese text and audio, Japanese players can import the cheaper version and set audio and text to Japanese. Text takes up non-trivial space, too (but the former reason is likely more important to Atlus, based on the kerfuffle with Arena, which had Japanese text and audio, but was region locked).

This. I love Persona 4 and I loved that Golden added the new ending for the characters that I love so much, but then the spinoffs happened. I can't stand any of them now, they are all so obnoxious.
I still love them in the original and Golden though, Golden is still my favorite game of all time but damn.

I really hope they stop the spinoff trains. I definitely agree the running the P3/P4 cast into the ground. Just collaborate with ASW and make a Persona 5 Arena/Ultimax and call it a day.

It is odd (and I've been beating this drum for years), that Persona's defining characterization tactic of showing "visual discription-based in-head name" initially for each character and then opening up more and more layers has been completely reversed in the subsequent years, starting with Golden. I don't know if it's the B Team writers sparking that or dullards in the fanbase pulling it in that direction, but yeah Im there, dude.

Or we can have SMT VI right after this and break the chain. do it do it do it do it do it

Probably a lot of both. They very purposely made the Persona 4 characters more marketable and easier to digest and people were more than happy to go "Hahaha fsteak!" and "Haha gay poses!" for eight years.

I think Golden's extra content writers were making the most expedient content they could make and Atlus was whispering in their ears "Hey, have a sauna scene were they talk about boobs," "Hey make this tsundere character to appeal to fans who like that stuff."

Persona 4 deserved better than Atlus' poochifying of it.

I would like to see a new rhythm title, actually. With a better UI, no story and songs from many SMT titles. Hell, Atlus has a treasure trove with great songs for this.

I'm sure this has been mentioned but...

Persona 5‘s story is designed to be like an “omnibus,” with no one specific enemy or criminal that the team chases after. Like a serial drama TV show, the Phantom Thieves change the targets they chase regularly.

This totally won't be the case and it'll turn out everything is the fault of some super powerful evil God.

Yes, but I don't think that they're implying that won't happen. It's just that they won't be chasing said villain from the start, they'll go through a different villain each arc.

The way I look at it is that it'll probably be something like the detective stories.

Start off with some standalone stories, introduce recurring characters like police/detective who are always on your trail, then after 30% through the story, introduce elements of "mysterious consistency" between all the cases post first quarter of the game, and then halfway through the game reveal a big bad who will then be interlinked with all the cases in the 2nd half of the game. Then evil god in the last quarter.

As long as we all agree there's gonna be an evil God in there.

Unlike every single Persona game to date, Persona 5 is the only one where the starting Personas of the cast are not based on mythological deities. Persona 3's and Persona 4's Big Bads were intrinsically linked to what the Personas of the main characters represented.

True, but I think it's safe to say that there's some kind of super natural force behind it. I think they can't shake that trope. I'm fine with it though, I haven't disliked how they've done it so far.

Even Catherine involved gods. Think it's safe to say if it's Megaten, demons/gods are involved somehow. Think it's also safe to say the Palace concept in P5 was put in place or overseen by some deity.

Just wonder if it's another female lol

Yep. As it turns out, we'll have been supporting chaos the whole time to the point where the king of the underworld talks about how we finally allowed him to pull the world into a lawless/chaotic society and reveal himself.

Man it would be really cool if we got Lucifer as a boss fight in a Persona game.

I've actually always found Satan to be the more intimidating one. I guess the way everyone was so fearful of him in SMTII along with the fact he has rarer appearances as secret ultra mega boss help.
I also had a much more difficult time beating him in SMTII.

I can't express how much I love this. I know we're all honeymooning P5, but even back when I played P4 for the first time, I wished there was more to the narrative then just saving people. I basically grew up on serial drama shows (and i'm still watching them) so i'm super stocked about this.

How? Spoil it for me.

I think he meant that the character should have been built from the ground up with bi/gay/straight intentions. For example I hate games with all the romance games with everyone being bi. As for your P4 example, I suspected Yosuke was going to an option, the ending and whole social link thing was so awkward. Why is he so mean to Kanji then in the game?

Some people have interest in the same sex, but don't act on these desires because it is against their view of what a relationship has to be. The subject would have made for a great S.Link if you ask me.

They probably won't. I would imagine that creating all those HD assets was incredibly expensive and they somehow have to recuperate from that. I'm pretty sure that P5 will be a critical darling, but that doesn't mean that it generates enough profit. New IPs aren't guaranteed to succeed and usually require their own assets, which means that they will most likely develop Persona and other SMT spin offs since they can at least reuse the demon models for these.

As long as people eat that stuff up, there's no reason for Atlus to not milk their fanbase dry.

Atlus didn't really start milking Persona 4 until Persona 4 Arena in 2012, though. With that in mind I doubt that Persona 5 will be another 8 year event - this time around Atlus will start pumping out spin-offs much sooner and not for as long.

Well, except for the inevitable crossovers with Persona 6, I guess.

Well I can't speak or read Japanese, so that would be impossible. That's really too bad that we don't get options.

I somehow think that after Persona 5's long development that P-Studio will probably want a break from everything Persona and will probably make a new IP again.

I stayed away from the spin-offs for this reason.

How? Spoil it for me.

Same here. I love Atlus games but there comes a point when enough is enough with all of these spin-offs, even with a masterpiece like Persona 4.

And yeah please do explain how it does, Flux, since I am never going to play DAN either, just not my type of game at all.

I guess? It eventually just ruins the novelty of the characters and I'm not sure using financial reasoning is good for the long term value.

This "novelty" concept clearly doesn't apply to the broader audience, given how much they've been doubling down on transmedia and spinoffs in recent years.

It's like how CoDs and AssCreeds are some of the best selling games every year, in a smaller scale. Forum-goers bitch about overexposure and annualisation of said games, but the fact that they sell in the multi-millions means that more people want MOAR of them compared to the amount of people who think they're a mistake.

Yeah. I know that many people like to point at games like Guitar Hero, but if anything, for games like CoD and AssCreed, I don't think they'd make any more money if they spent more time on making the games better or giving one of the series a break. One day they'll stop selling like they do, but I expect it would be the same even if they spread out their releases more.

Someone name these personas for me please? I can see Zoro and everyone has mentioned Arsenne but I've no clue who the others are based off of.

I was thinking about this when I first saw it, but...

Assuming these two scenes are two different sequences, I think it means that whenever a target of the Phantom Thieves is dealt with, the area of Palace that their objective correlates to starts falling apart and they have to run the hell away.

Would make sense. If it's a supernatural locale born of that person and you steal their "heart," well...
