Persona 5 Famitsu Details

Well it's totally possible that the P4 cast people will be like 'No thanks, I'm kinda burn out on this series right now'

I mean, 5 games is a LOT to be doing 1-2 characters for.

A situation like that almost certainly wouldn't arise because if an actor doesn't want to play a character, they won't audition for it. And actors like long-haul roles because that's guaranteed work for them. Troy Baker isn't not playing Kanji because he's tired of it, he presumably just has more and probably better paying offers.

The only time an actor doesn't want to reprise a role is if the working environment is unfavorable of they feel they can do no more with the character they play. The latter is pretty rare, too.

5 games is not a lot when they also work on anime with hundreds of episodes for many years

Negotiation can really add character to the demons you fight in SMT games. I think the Raidou games did them the best. It's by far the most unique thing about SMT, and I'd love them to find a cool way to implement it and make it less frustration/random.

Didn't you have to abuse a weakness and then mash buttons to recruit demons in the Raidou Kuzunoha games, instead of the dialogue negotiation?

So I'm going to be new to Persona when this comes out as my only exposure to it at this point is the Persona 4 Golden anime (which was in it's own right odd and didn't explain that much). What do I need to know coming in and will I be completely lost?

You shouldn't need to know anything going in for P5, although the other games are good enough to be worth playing anyway!

And yeah, the Golden anime kind of relies on the viewer's knowledge of the Persona 4 original anime or game.

The one thing I hope is that the party this time around is balanced. P3 party members constantly kept fighting until the end and P4 were too pally with each other. P5 should have a proper mix of both.

You don't need to know anything, each Persona title has their own contained story, except for one and two.

Also, try to read up on the Press turn system, which is the battle system from the Shin Megami Tensei series. Persona 3 and 4 used a different take on the press turn system and Persona 5 is expected to use the press turn system as well.

Also try to read up on the different skills in the Persona games because for a nee comer it may seem confusing but they aren't too hard to figure out. Reading up on them will definitely help you get through the game.

And there's the reason why I won't be playing this. It actually stopped me from playing Persona 4. I loved the world and the story elements but I just was unable to drag myself through such tedious gameplay. Such a shame because the rest of the game outside the dungeons was fantastic.

Play in very easy mode! Seriously i have started to P4 Golden 3 times and never finished it due to boring dungeons and battles. At my 3rd time i started in very easy mode and really enjoyed the game 100x more.

I guess I am the only one (nah, of course I am not, lol) that think overall the P3's cast work better cohesively as a whole than P4. P4's cast is.... well, "friends", but P3's cast always seem to go deeper for me than just "friends". The history between Mitsuru-Akihiko, the dynamics between Junpei and Minato, the dynamics between Yukari and Minato, the relationship of Mitsuru and Yukari, and Aegis with the MC, and Aegis with Yukari (the last three were particularly profound during the Answer), etc etc.

None of the relationships in P4 can touch any of those in terms of depth, in my opinion.

Yeah, I dunno about the constantly fighting part. Midway or 3/4 through the game they've pretty much resolved their differences and became united.

Most other JRPGs have elemental spells with names like Fireball, Blizzard, etc. But Persona (and SMT) games use names like Agi and Bufu which may be confusing. You'll just have to remember the names.

Point remains in both cases P3 and P4 were on opposite ends of the spectrum. The resolution in differences came too late in P3 the same as the antagonism towards each other in P4 was towards the endgame. None of them found that heady balance of antagonism/friendliness which is something I hope to see in P5.

Pick AHHHHH and see the demon instantly captivated to you lololol
Shuffle Time is the best. I hope negotiation doesn't replace it. I don't hate negotiation (except when I fail a lot), I just love Shuffle Time.

After SMTIV DLC shenanigans, is anyone else worried about P5?

Costume should be expected by us now, and for me personally it wouldn't be a huge problem. It is story and gameplay-affecting DLC that we should worry about. For the latter case, EOUII have horrible DLC practice that locked part of the map behind paywall. Fortunately, Japanese gamer shit on it and combined with low sales should give heads up to Atlus executive that they better not to mess P5 DLC.

I think demon negotiation would be a really cool return if it was more specific to each demon. If every demon has unique personalities and if your Personas (assuming you are still wild card) have mythological relationships with those demons that should come into play when you try to recruit them. Also doing small quests to recruit unsure demons would be a nice touch too.

I really do hope that there are social links in some form or another. For all the "lol waifu" talk, that system was one of the best aspects of the games by far, for it merged narrative and gameplay in some really profound and original way, no mention that it integrated with the story seamessly a la ff7's materia, with all the far-flung consequences that it implied. It was truthly a strike of genious.

Persona 2 was nearly like that, wasn't it? Specific contacts always worked on specific demons, your persona could have a conversation with a demon if they had a mythological relationship, and some demons would give you quests.

Demon negotiation could get tedious, but I kinda miss it, and I wish Atlus would bring a more simple version back.

Hype level went up by 20 once I read MC's persona is based on Arsene Lupin.

now give me an atagonist based on Holmes

Rivalry in gentleman thief story is a must. It could be either among thieves or to an ace detective. Personally I pick for the latter though.

Hngh....I'm currently in September in P4G on vita. I know I'm far off still, but I don't want it to end....it's so addicting maxing out SLs, grinding dungeons and completing quests.

I just wish they'd announce a more specific release date already. :(

I've never played a persona game, but i am interested in trying a new RPG. I have a vita on the way as well, should i pick up persona 4 golden for it?

Most definitely!
Persona 5 Golden is an essential for any Vita owner in my opinion.
Apparently it's slow at the beginning (I didn't notice this) but it is a ton of fun fusing personas and working on the social links.
The combat is simple yet fun and it has possibly the best cast of characters you will ever find in a game.

What?

If anything, the biggest most major complaint about Social Links in P3/P4 is just how insulated they are to the happenings in the main story. P3 in particular is very bad at this.

P4G is a step in the right direction though, with the game, for example, acknowledging your choice of romantic partner on numerous parts of the game.

Well, the Lupin vs Holmes rivalry (at least for Lupin fans) is something that codifies the "phantom thief vs detective" anime trope. :p i just hope the rival would be appealing as oppose to dumbed down/incompetent detective.

Thief vs thief almost always end up being some moral lesson... (kaito kid, dna angel arc 1)

Seeing the tone and theme of the game Hashino tried to aim to, I think he'll choose the former if he really want to maximizes P5 potential.
Yeah, yaoi fan crowd would go crazy if this happened too

Persona isn't for everybody, but it is for a lot of people and it is time well spent to find out if you are one of them.

There is nothing to suggest P5 will not be brilliant, so might as well jump in now.

You're doing yourself a huge disservice if you own a Vita but don't own P4G. If you want to dig into a new RPG, go buy it this instant!

Then if you enjoy that, you could give P3P a go along with Persona 2 if you get really into the series. I personally wouldn't recommend Persona 1 though it has it's charms.

I feel like more folks would enjoy the negotiation system if it wasn't tied too heavily into how one gained Personas/Demons. If it was just an option in battle rather than a somewhat tedious method of recruitment. Without it though I do think demons lack character (although fighting Shadows was pretty bland in comparison anyway).

Fixed.

Was just watching some intro stuff from P3:FES and was interested to note the kid in the prison outfit right at the start. Without spoiling anything (I haven't played P3 yet, and I'll be damned if I'm paying $45 on PSN), is there any suggestion that there might be a link to the imprisoned MC in the P5 trailer?

No. The kids outfit in p3 is wearing pajamas, and his story ties in with only p3. It wouldn't make sense for him to appear in p5.

Preach, and play the best way to experience the game aka FeMC route. Don't listen to any heretics that try to dissuade from Way of My Life.

I love playing Persona 3 FES on my Vita.

I'll give you the second half, though. I'm just too nice to outright say it like that.

Well probably safe to assume that the guy has a PS3 and thus he should opt for FES instead, in my humble opinion. Especially since it has The Answer and it is a pretty important piece of Persona canon lore.

Persona 1... yeah, by any standard that anyone can use to measure a good game, that one failed spectacularly at all of them. I am grateful at the very least that it gave birth to the Persona series as a whole.

We are forever destined to be interlocked in the great Which Persona 3 Is Better battle huh.

Proudly waving my P3FES here.

Eh, even if he has a PS3 I'm inclined to recommend P3P to him. The Answer is balls and I've gotten on just fine with the lore having never finished it. That said...

...so I'll stop here before another debate starts up. :P

People actually completed The Answer? I couldn't stomach a difficult, combat focused epilogue in a game with a frustratingly poor combat system. Maybe if FES had party control but it didn't feel worth it to struggle through that mess to add to an already standalone ending like 3. If people actually want to see that stuff it's probably just worth watching it on youtube.

Persona 1 is just fine. 2 just does everything better.

The Answer wasn't all that difficult really, well lack of compendium was a bit.. annoying...

I think I just wanted more of P3 at the time. Although, I think I would replay it if Persona 3 Velvet ever came out.

Being kinda obvious here but why not both?
Stupid Atlus :(

The issue is that they both have positives the other lacks, which makes it a pretty difficult debate—especially if you're trying to recommend which version someone should play for the first time.

Hoping for an eventual P3 Sapphire/Velvet/Cobalt/BlueWhatever that combines FES and P3P, but I severely doubt it'll ever happen.

I wasn't really talking about which version to play if someone would play P3 now, but it depends on what console(s) does the person have and how much time is he/she going to invest in it.
If both FES & P3P are options and time isn't a big limiting factor, imo FES as original MC and then P3P as FeMC. If both are still options but time is is going to be a limiting factor, I would say......crap, I don't know which to recommend.

I guess FES because it's the more "proper" version of the two, with running around the places instead of just having a map screen and cutscenes. Both have their positives though.

I'd probably recommend similarly given time constraints, but on the other hand I *really* like the FeMC social link changes (aside from Ken...), because I felt they really fleshed out the team in a way the original game and FES just never did.

I think as a package I'd say FES, but if the specific person was far more into VNs and the like than more traditional RPGs, I'd say FeMC P3P.
