Persona 5 - PV 04 [New Trailer]

Man I am loving everything in this trailer. I am just sitting here in line watching this trailer and interview appreciating all the little stylistic details that puts this game on another level compared to other games.

LIke, everything looks 100% baller to me other than the fanservice and motorcycle thing outta nowhere. Atlus has my absolute faith in delivering something that should blow me away. Unfortunately, I just don't see anything that sets this game apart. It's like they took Persona 3 or Persona 4 and added higher production values, while improving dungeon design (this is actually pretty damn awesome, but at the same time I don't know how the stealth is going to work).

As someone who was dead set on this being the best game ever at this time last year, I just don't know what exactly to latch on to that will make this game distinctly memorable other than it looking extremely stylish and polished. There's no feeling of romance that I get looking at this game after and we're four major trailers in. It looks like a cooler P3/P4 in trailers and that's not enough for me. I am hoping my doubts are erased when I finally play this thing, but after this trailer I think I finally understand why I'm not as attached to this as I once was.

Don't expect anything fancy judging by the Hashino interview bit the stealth is combined with the mask tearing mechanic and it replaces the hit shadow from behind to gain the initiative in the fight.

I guess that's what I'm trying to articulate. It just looks really stylish to me, and I'm not seeing anything here that stands out from P3/4 or what I like in Persona. I'm seeing a lot of glitz and style, but not much substance. Maybe it's because they're trailers that I feel this way. But then I watch the SMT4: F trailers and I'm like "strap in." I'm not getting the same feeling from P5.

.

How can you even tell whether or not it has substance when you haven't even played it?

So by now we judge games and their stories by watching 4 minute trailers?

What are the chances of Atlus going full on ps2 era Atlus with these new demon assets and making a new console SMT and side stuff like DDS/Raidou?

Extraordinarily high. Part of the reason for this game's long, Nocturne-esque development cycle is almost certainly to put together PS4-quality demon assets for use in later titles.

Well, trailers by their very nature are supposed to draw people in and provide a basic template of what they're trying to go for. I just watched it with sound on, and it's still not doing it. It's not a complete judgement on the final product of the game, but providing a core idea of the themes and artistic intent is pretty much a trailers job - to give a hint of substance.

Holy shit, this game looks fantastic O_O

I hope the release date in the West is not much later than Japan's. I am expecting E3 to be the place where they will finally announce it...

P3/4 were a blast, take that with higher production values and I'm happy. I think expecting anything to be "best game ever" will inevitably lead to disappointment, because there's always going to be something that could have been done to make the game better. While I like s.links, I always find the implementation of them to be kinda shallow, for instance. Character plotlines are usually either weak and forgettable, or they get resolved too easily. I'm not expecting P5 to really pick up the slack in that regard (if s.links are still in), but maaaybe. Dungeons also felt kind of boring outside of theme/design, so at the least it looks like they're working on that aspect as well. So I can kinda see where you're coming from, but I think lowering expectations as far as being blown away by something that's significantly different/inventive from P3 and 4's formula might help.

Apologies if that was kind of rambly.

Well, if you've been following the marketing of this game from the November 2013 event, you should have an idea of what that "substance" is. The first teaser literally laid out the title's main theme: "You are slave. Want emancipation?"

Perhaps if you understood Japanese? There's a LOT of dialogue in this trailer. I'm sure they give a pretty broad overview of the themes and plot of the game.

I also disagree with the core premise of your argument, but that's besides the point. XD

You can't really get the full picture without understanding the dialogue in the trailer. It's going to take a while for the 4th trailer to be translated, but I believe there are subs for the 3rd trailer somewhere.

Hopefully it doesn't take too long for the fansubs to start popping up, I'm curious as to all the dialogue as well.

Seems more like they're asking the citizens of Tokyo whether they believe in the phantom thieves or not. One answer is "I'm an elementary student, but I'm not this dumb."

The question is "Do you believe in the phantom heart thieves?" so it might be an in-universe thing about your notoriety.

Edit: ok beaten

Aww, that was one of my favorite things about Catherine :(

Then again, I'm not sure how that would work in a game like this.

You're right. I didn't articulate it correctly and was being a bit hyperbolic since I was having difficulty putting my own thoughts on this game through trailers into words, but approaching it from a different perspective would help.

Well, that was trouser shatteringly brilliant.

Really hope this gets released this year in Europe, or at least simultaneous release with NA. Resisting importing this is going to be murder.

Hopefully we'll get an English language version of this trailer at E3 too.

This is probably the new Die for Me animation, to be more C.S. Lewis-themed..

Is that blonde girl
teddie?!

I feel like people are being too harsh on you. You're right, trailers are suppose to be flashy and I feel like this trailer showed more of the flash that goes with Persona and less of the somber allegory on life that Persona is known for.
