Pikmin side-scroller announced for Nintendo 3DS, coming 2017

I imagine some of you Pikmin fans are feeling what I felt when they revealed Federation Force.

I'm here if you need me.

This is way different than the situations surrounding Metroid and Chibi Robo because ynlike those franchises, we got a proper fantastic entry in the Pikmin series with Pikmin 3 back in 2013.

Plus, this doesn't look bad at all. In fact it looks really fun combining the strategy of Pikmin games into a 2D space.

It indeed is Pikmin Mass Attack. Kirby Mass Attack was the last first party game for DS, so...

I never understood this "let's make it 2D so kids can enjoy it" philosophy. 3DS can capable of running full 3D Pikmin and Chibi Robo games so why not.

Technically, sure, but would you want it? I don't doubt that their previous experiments with adapting Pikmin to their most recent handhelds led them to this format, since resolution is actually pretty important. The 3DS can't even match the first game's internal resolution.

I feel like people are worrying too much that this is what that Pikmin 4 was. I seriously doubt this is Pikmin 4, they're probably saving that for the NX to hopefully get it closer to launch than Pikmin 3 was. And in the mean time, this looks alright, a fun little side game. More interesting than Nintendo Land's Pikmin game and I got some fun out of that. Wonder if it'll be all that interesting to speedrun, doesn't seem to be a timer or anything though so probably not.

This looks pretty fun.

Playing Olimar in Smash, you do get the idea that Pikmin would work decently well as a 2D sidescroller, and this looks about what I would have expected from a Pikmin platformer.

They made Pikmin Lemmings. The absolute madmen.

But seriously, I hope this isn't the new Pikmin game Miyamoto's been teasing for years.

Everyones tired of 2D platformers because we have no shortage of amazing choices to play in this industry now.

Especially from Nintendo's recent output. Nobody is gonna pick NSMB2 or Zip Lash over great games like Tropical Freeze.

I love how this game looks and I know it's just a spinoff.

I can't wait for Pikmin 4 for NX.

I like it, but I had the Federation Force sinking feeling. I was hyped for NX and Pikmin 4.

But this is Pikmin 4.

This is a spinoff...or they would've straight up said Pikmin 4.

Everyone picked up NSMB2 over Tropical Freeze.
It's a cruel world.

Don't tell me this was Pikmin 4.

I mean it doesn't look bad but

I need Pikmin 4

Same. I think it's probably just a quick game to raise franchise awareness in advance of Pikmin 4.

I don't know if this looks bad necessarily, just reminds me a bit of the Chibi Robo sidescroller. Ehhh.

Comparisons to Chibi Robo are odd because no one gave a flying fiddle about Chibi Robo in the first place.

Why do you guys think this is going to be Pikmin 4? It's obviously not.

Jump to the worst conclusions friend.

Granted after "here's Mario Maker with no online!" I can understand some scepticism.

I freaking love Pikmin, but seriously... 2D side scroller on the 3DS!?

I'd be very surprised if they named this Pikmin 4. The game currently doesn't have a title going by the trailer. What this could very well be is a new spin off series which is fine as we just had Pikmin 3 not that long ago and you can still buy it and its DLC. Pikmin games have become sort of a graphical showcase for the systems so I wouldn't be surprised to see Pikmin 4 announced when the NX is revealed.

So they looked at Chibi Robo's sales and thought "That's great guys! We should do that again."

Chibi Robo was a microscopic series with a bunch of poorly selling (and in some cases, mediocre reviewed) games under its belt.

Pikmin is a AAA Nintendo series with moderately good sales and is well known as a quality series.

There's a huge difference

I've been saying since Pikmin 2 that they should release a sidescrolling Pikmin game for the DS. Glad to finally get my wish. Although this will probably tank and they will never make another one.

Looks great to me, and clearly not Pikmin 4 if the title is 'Pikmin [name not final]'.

You guys always jump to conclusions and freak out. Pikmin is the kind of game that would always work as a 2D sidescroller and this looks to have enough Pikmin in it.

It also bodes well for the franchise.

I don't think this is the Pikmin 4 mentioned by Miyamoto, but seems like a cool take on the formula in 2D. Definitely interested.
