Pikmin side-scroller announced for Nintendo 3DS, coming 2017

Why do you guys think this is going to be Pikmin 4? It's obviously not.

this is NOT Pikmin 4.

They just announced a version of Mario Maker with no online and thought this was worth ending on. I think people have good reason to fear the worst.

This may be Pikmin 4, so what? The franchise is alive, they are once again expanding an iP because they believe in it. This doesn't exlude that a normal Pikmin will come in the future.

Some embarrassing jumps to conclusion and "they're killing our franchises" reactions. With the random drive by post here and there. As usual. Boring and predictable gaf at it again.

If you said the words "Pikmin spin-off" to me, a 2D platformer preserving the series' fundamental concept of tactically chucking Pikmin around is probably what I would have asked for, though being a strategy player I'll certainly feel the loss of the planning and resource management framework of the game. I can see why this would be pushed for the 3DS, too, when we don't know whether the release of the NX will be the end of the line for stylus control.

As always, I expect 3DS footage to look muddy; when has it not? Even Federation Force's designs (from what I saw in Blast Ball) looked so much better on the system itself, in motion.

I feel like Pikmin without the realistic and beautiful visuals really loses a lot to its presentation.

Its funny cause i was just thinking to myself that i wanna replay Pikmin 2 this summer and they announce this.

If this was actually Pikmin 4 then it shows how little they truely care about their franchises now. Having such a winning formula going strong for 3 games then the series becoming 2D would be asinine.

If they unveil NX and we still see no sight of any pikmin 4 then we can start to panic

But we know absolutely nothing about any games whatsoever coming to NX right now. Let's just wait before we start mourning Pikmin 4's death

Pikmin 4 was already close to completion back in E3 2015, if this was Pikmin 4 we'd be addressed that. It's a spin-off, let's not get worked up here.

I would absolutely believe this is the Pikmin game Miyamoto was talking about, but that doesn't preclude development of one for NX. As Miyamoto said, when they finish one Pikmin game they are always working on the next one.

Guess I'll check this spin off out.

Granted, I do get the sentiments of having yet another sidescroller considering Nintendo has loads of them.

My thoughts exactly. It looks fun, but I'll be disappointed if this is the "Pikmin 4" we've been hearing about.
Wouldn't you simply assume a new Pikmin game reported in development to be the "4"th one? This is likely that game.

I know people are fearing this is the Pikmin 4 Miyamoto was talking about, but...well, let's see what he said to EG awhile ago.

Pikmin 4 is in development and "very close to completion", Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has exclusively confirmed to Eurogamer.

Speaking during an interview held back in July, Nintendo's top designer revealed that work on a fourth major Pikmin game was well underway.

"It's actually very close to completion," Miyamoto said. "Pikmin teams are always working on the next one."

Nintendo then confirmed the news to Eurogamer in a separate statement:

"We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present."

The last title in the garden strategy series, Pikmin 3, launched for Wii U back in 2013.

So, yes, Miyamoto was indeed referring not just to a Pikmin game, but to the next major Pikmin game, the 4th installment.

Yeah, people overreact way to much.

They're not going from free roaming beautiful strategy RPG games on a console and then the 4th title is a side scroller on the 3DS

If this is the Pikmin Miyamoto was talking about that means a Pikmin game for NX is further away than it was supposed to be and that's pretty frustrating.

Plus the "franchise is alive" is bullshit. The franchise is not only about characters, it's about the genre which is such a rarity on Nintendo devices. Because otherwise the franchise is alive through SSB anyhow.

Thank you for this. Honestly, it should be added to the OP.

Any word who's developing?

No word on who's developing. I'm wondering if it's an internal team or not. Arzest is due for another game soon I think and YNI while super retread-y and had short levels mostly, was solidly designed IMO.

Nintendo fans are quickly becoming one of the worst fanbases on gaf. Just whine whine whine because every game isn't Super Mario Galaxy 3 or Metroid Prime 4

Comparisons to Chibi Robo are odd because no one gave a flying fiddle about Chibi Robo in the first place.

Jump to the worst conclusions friend.

Granted after "here's Mario Maker with no online!" I can understand some scepticism.

I surely hope so! Because it would so damn sad if it is.

Ok, answer me this.

Why did they say Pikmin "For Nintendo 3DS (name not final)" rather than Pikmin 4? This is obviously a spin off to the main series.

C'mon guys!

Immediate thought: OH FUCK NO THEY'RE CHIBI ROBO-ING PIKMIN

After watching the trailer: ok actually this looks pretty good

Please don't have Arztest developing.

Would kill the small hope I have for this

Did you play Yoshi's Island DS? Really under-appreciated game despite some polarizing responses to the music. As I mentioned above, Yoshi's New Island is solid as well, just a bit too far on the re-tread/NSMB style.

It looks like Arzest artstyle from the crappy Yoshi game on 3DS lol

Have you played this "crappy Yoshi game"?

Yes I have. I hated the baby music. It was the worst Yoshi game for me and I've played all of them.

It is alive, Pikmin 3 came out on WiiU and had a wonderful support with DLC coming almost a year after the game was released. Of course it sucks to think that a sequel made in the normal style may be far away, but reacting like they are killing this like F-Zero is wrong. And this is isn't even a Federation Force situation.

while it's my guess too, we really know with certainty?

When A Link Between Worlds was announced, did you suspect that it would replace Zelda Wii U at the time?

To answer your question. No I do not know with certainty but logical deduction says as much. This is a pretty interesting take on the Pikmin formula but it's not going to be a main installment.

Oh and I am ready to eat crow if I am wrong. I hope I'm not but we'll see.

Ok, fair enough. Just a lot of people hated on the game without playing it. I understand the music is terribly grating for some tracks, but I don't think the level design was anything bad. Just brief and too focused on remixing old concepts. I think Yoshi's Island DS, from essentially the same developer (Arzest is the successor to Artoon) was quite excellent.

This has been confirmed?

Guys, stop mentioning Arzest, you're scaring me.
Though that would at least get the "it's Pikmin 4! WHY?!" crowd to cool down.

Have you played this "crappy Yoshi game"?

Sorry max but I did and there was nary an original idea in there as well as Yoshi controlling like sludge with delayed egg prepping, it wasn't a bad game so to speak but I can't really say much for it, especially when Wooly World (soon available on 3DS to wash away those new island woes!) dances over its face in every way, shape and form.

Yeah, I played YIDS, I couldn't get into it.

Sorry to hear it. It took me some time to get into as well but once I did I was really impressed with the complexity of level design and baby-switching mechanic.

NP, totally understand. I agree YWW destroys it in quality. My only point was as you said, it's not original but it's not bad per se. It seemed a lot of the game was directed by what Tezuka wanted from it, though it's hard to tell that really just from interviews. I thought the DS game was a more creative showing. I think Pikmin 3DS seems to have promise regardless. Even if it ends up being a by-the-numbers game, it can still be a fun one and in the case of Pikmin we don't have a side scroller to mentally compare it to. Though, I'm hopeful it will be quite fun and creative rather than serviceable.

(And, I'll get YWW 3DS for just the Poochy levels. :D)
