Pikmin side-scroller announced for Nintendo 3DS, coming 2017

Did you play Yoshi's Island DS? Really under-appreciated game despite some polarizing responses to the music. As I mentioned above, Yoshi's New Island is solid as well, just a bit too far on the re-tread/NSMB style.

Have you played this "crappy Yoshi game"?

New Island, DS and Topsy Turvy are some of the most mediocre Nintendo games ever made.

Would rather play Yoshi's Story. By the way DS has horrible difficulty curve issues.

Not that excited for this one based on the initial footage, but it's far enough out that I could definitely be won over. I'm just not big into platformers and I don't really know how the Pikmin formula translates to a platformer.

Have any of you guys seen the sales of the three Pikmin games? We're lucky with the amount of Pikmin games we have gotten, when it's a F-Zero tier franchise. I was afraid Pikmin 3 may have been the end of the franchise, tbh.

Ok, fair enough. Just a lot of people hated on the game without playing it. I understand the music is terribly grating for some tracks, but I don't think the level design was anything bad. Just brief and too focused on remixing old concepts. I think Yoshi's Island DS, from essentially the same developer (Arzest is the successor to Artoon) was quite excellent.

This has been confirmed?

Speculation, or?

If it's not a main studio, I'm ready to retract my statements about this being the hyped up Pikmin game Miyamoto keeps mentioning. I hope so.
Artoon hasn't existed since 2010.

You're debating semantics. He said a new Pikmin game was in development "close to completion" and this is the result.

Then why would Nintendo say this about Miyamoto's statement?
We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present.

You seriously think Nintendo's next numbered release in one of their AAA franchises is a 2D side scroller spin off on the 3DS? Announced in the tail end of a Direct in a 15 second blurb?

Nintendo fans are quickly becoming one of the worst fanbases on gaf. Just whine whine whine because every game isn't Super Mario Galaxy 3 or Metroid Prime 4

I'll say its a vocal minority. People enjoy getting outraged. Its always the same users, too.

Good lord, please not Artoon / Arzest / whatever their name is.

Yoshi's Island DS remains, to me, the worst game in any of Nintendo's major series. I have never felt more robbed than when I bought that at launch day. I've avoided all of their games like the plague since then.

Absolutely abominable game, that was.

Artoon hasn't existed since 2010.

They just rebranded to Arzest, possibly because the name was toxic. The key employees are the same, I believe.

iirc Miyamoto never explicitly referred to it as Pikmin 4, just the next Pikmin game. Which it is.

See Mpl90's post; he referred to it as Pikmin 4.

I respect your opinion, and only really disagree in re: the DS game. Which as you said has a rough difficulty curve, but I still enjoyed it a lot. We can agree to disagree. Hopefully this game will be great regardless of the developer.

Yup, that's it. Pikmin fans have to accept this.

Since I'm not a Pikmin fan I couldn't care less what Nintendo does with the Pikmin franchise, but I do feel sorry for Pikmin fans. Its a pretty similar situation of what it was like when Federation Force and Amiibo Festival for fans of these franchises were announced.

I don't get why Nintendo keeps doing stuff like this to their fanbase.

Or maybe, unlike apologists, some people are tired of Nintendo being lazy with all these sidescrollers. Except for Metroid as some people said :/

It isn't similar. See Mpl90's post on the last page or two. Miyamoto referred to Pikmin 4. We have no reason to believe this is that game.

Nintendo called it "Pikmin 4" when they officially commented on it shortly after the EG interview with Miyamoto was published.

That being said, they absolutely could have been referring to this game and I wouldn't be surprised at all if that ends up being the case.

Personally i think it is just Gamers.

Used to love discussing video games, but yeah... the constant negativity grinds you down.

People keep calling this a 2D platformer but isn't this filling a different niche? yeah it's 2D but puzzle focused, with a methodical pace and the series existing elements, doesn't seem comparable to say NSMB2 or DKCR3D.
The SNES would have broken some of you, like Super Mario World, Lost Vikings and Super Contra would all fall under the same umbrella.

Olimar can't even jump by the looks of things!

Nintendo ruining another series by making it a 2d side scroller.

But people LOVE 2d sidescrollers!

At least they love to brag about how they love 2d sidescrollers

"Omg donkey kong tropical freeze so perfect best game ever" but if retro's next game is another 2d platformer people will riot

"Omg yoshi wooly world so beautiful such exploration" and yet as soon as people saw that the map had 3d movement everybody went "it would be great if the whole game was like this..."

If you like touchscreen platformers, you should give Mass Attack a try if you haven't. Awesome DS game with some similar mechanics to this.

I love me some Mass Attack, own every Kirby game from DS up! Canvas Curse is my Fav Kirby game of all times, Rainbow could take it if I could just get 4 people to play Waddle dee...

Not at all, the game actually looks pretty good. But I am having a very hard time believing this is the next main installment.

It isn't similar. See Mpl90's post on the last page or two. Miyamoto referred to Pikmin 4. We have no reason to believe this is that game.

He also has talked about wanting to put Pikmin on a handheld in the past as well. So there's no reason to not believe this is that game.

Look, I get some Pikmin fans want a real Pikmin game, but this at least seems faithful enough to the series, unlike Federation Force which was a clear FU to the fans and Amiibo Festival which was just a spin-off made just to sell amiibo.

Don't know why people are hating. This looks new and interesting. I much prefer this to another standard Pikmin game. Reminds me of a type of game you would see on the SNES... something that hasn't really been done for a while. Nice potential for puzzles as well.

I'll say its a vocal minority. People enjoy getting outraged. Its always the same users, too.

Look at Nintendo's sales. Gamers as a whole are giving up on them. They couldn't even keep half of their core fanbase from the GCN days. Some people actually want them to get their act together though, since they have many IPs with great potential. The only obnoxious part of the fanbase is the one that wants to constantly pat Nintendo on the back for a strikingly increasing amount of shit efforts and anti-gamer decisions of the past 3-4 years. Being more of backseat lawyers for an electronics company than actual videogame fans. NX isn't going to improve, if there's narratives going around, acting as if they did nothing wrong and WiiU only failed because of bad coincidences or something.

Yoshi Story was waaaaay worse, and that was made internally by Nintendo.

The typical "Nintendo fan" on GAF hates every Nintendo game except 3D Mario, Zelda and Metroid for what I've observed. Thankfully it doesn't represent the majority of Nintendo fans, and we keep getting great sidescrollers along the 3D games.

Right, it seems halfway between Mass Attack and a puzzler. I didn't notice about Olimar not being able to jump but, it could make sense in the context of the game. Them not showing him jumping doesn't confirm he can't, but it does point to it as a strong possibility.

He also has talked about wanting to put Pikmin on a handheld in the past as well. So there's no reason to not believe this is that game.

Yes. There is reason to believe this is not that game. Because he referred to that as Pikmin 4, whereas this was announced and was not titled Pikmin 4. You have to remember Pikmin is Miyamoto's main focus at Nintendo above pretty much all other franchises. Pikmin 3 was a success and I very very very much doubt he will stop that style of entry after re-releasing the games on Wii, giving it more exposure in Nintendo Land, launching the 3rd entry successfully for Wii U, and making the series of short films.

BTW, here is (part one of) a great translated interview with Miyamoto on Pikmin 3, if you're (or anyone) is interested:

http://kamedani.tumblr.com/post/55798867746/4-gamer-interview-with-shigeru-miyamoto-part-1

Just read it recently and it gives a ton of insight into how he views the game(s).

Whatever dude. This isn't Pikmin 4 or it would've been called it. It's clearly a side game for the 3DS. It's probably not being made by Nintendo. Miyamoto said Nintendo is making Pikmin 4. This game looks like it's from Arzest.

There's no way this is what Miyamoto referred to over a year ago. I really don't think this game has been in development that long

The Donkey Kong Country series has always been 2d this is the same thing they did to chibi robo.

Whether or not this is the game Miyamoto talked about likely depends on who is developing it. If it is outsourced, then I don't think this is that game.

How is this being lazy? 2D games are not lazy games either.

2D games doesn't mean lazy. But let's be fair, it feels like they're farming out cheap 2D sidescrollers. You have many ambitious 2D games. What we seen these days from Nintendo doesn't. Except for Kirby Planet Robobot.

If this game is Pikmin 4 then why did it take so long to develop when Miyamoto said it was almost completed back in July 2015? Just think. This isn't Pikmin 4.

Then why would Nintendo say this about Miyamoto's statement?

You seriously think Nintendo's next numbered release in one of their AAA franchises is a 2D side scroller spin off on the 3DS? Announced in the tail end of a Direct in a 15 second blurb?

You seriously think a new, properly-titled Metroid Prime game is a multiplayer 3DS game with chibi characters and no Samus?

I'm pretty excited for this game. I think you could do some different things with the "inventory management" of your pikmin in side scrolling. It could sure make multi-tasking different. It reminds me of some of the challenge stages in Pikmin 3 that were more or less 2d. That was a way different experience compared to the other stages.

What's unambitious about Yoshi's Woolly World or Kirby and the Rainbow Curse compared to Robobot? :/
