Playing Final Fantasy VII for the first time

Update: I haven't been playing this over the weekend but will get back to it today or tomorrow.

I just got out of the sewers after rescuing Tifa from the Don and apparently Barrett has gone and done himself a mischief so I have to go and save him. The scene with the Don where all three characters threaten him with genital mutilation in turn was... special, I'm not sure what to really say about that.

Chop, rip, smash. All in a day's work.

Which one of the girls did he pick? Was it Cloud?

Man, im so jealous of you right now; experiencing all this for the first time. I'm gonna have to replay the damn game. Might start next weekend. I swore i wouldn't replay it until the remake but even if a remake happens, i have no confidence in it being as good.

Game is so overhyped imo.

This was the last of the PS1 FF's I played as a pre-teen. Ugh, all I remember is how annoyed I was at how big of a whiny little girl Cloud was being ... Oh, and Tifa, who could forget dat' babe.

Playing Parasite Eve 1, now that was an experience to remember.

One of the many scenes that is so great and fitting with the graphics as is, that it would be utterly ruined in a remake.

FF7 is chock full of these kinds of moments, and it boggles my mind when people clamor for a remake with super modern realistic graphics in the style of AC. Scenes like this will either be gone completely or will be very, very weird...

I don't see how Cloud is whinny. He's the complete opposite. More stand-offish then anything.

Nope, definitely a little girl about things.

The main hero, Cloud, is a silent emo so full of shit and self-doubt that he would make any other emo person on earth sound like an upbeat, sunshine loving hippy. When he gets two, yes, TWO hot babes totally willing to take it in the ass he treats them like utter shit, because he's got a bigger goal, to fuck Sephiroth.

Uhm lol. That's the closest similar opinion I could find.

How? Even in the beginning of the game he acts like a dick with the Avalenche members. He's entire attuide is "let's just get this done". How is he acting like a girl? What does that even mean?

Look, when I played FF9 all the characters had pretty bad situations too, but they didn't sit around for half the game and piss and moan. Same with FF4, there the biggest complainer moves on to become a Paladin.

It was a while ago, at least 7 years, when I was 12. I just remember being really annoyed with Cloud and it totally had an impact on how I viewed the game.

In 9 Zidanne has an entire part where he actually whines and is all about telling people to leave him alone. Its the worst part of the game. But I can't think of an actual part where Cloud is extremely whinny and acts like a girl. At least not where it defines his entire characte.

Spoilers don't read if you haven't played the game:
Cloud actually thinks he's a different person for the majority of the game and his best friend covers for him because she's too scared of his fragile persona. He doesn't whine he just self implodes.

It was responsible for one of my favorite songs from that game, but yeah the problem of identity is a big deal with Cloud and Zidane (Tidus for that matter as well).

Frigging hate this part of the game. I honestly think it is the most unappealing moment in any Final Fantasy game. So unbearable for me, that's why I often just end my replays right there.

This I know. I just can't word it how I worded it when I was 12. Having a hard time recalling those emotions and thoughts.

It really is completely out of character for Zidane too. Thankfully it's mercifully short. I actually like Terra as a whole and think that part of the game could be expanded upon.

Yeah it really sucks. For most of the game Zidanne was very optimistic and dashing. A good adventure lead, but maybe not very deep. That was fine though, but then they throw in that part. It was like they felt the need to do it because main characters needed idenenty crisis issues or something. At least "You're not Alone" is a good song.

doesn't dagger or whoever mope in a basic zombie state for a good chunk of the game? That I remember being annoying.

Certainly have no desire to play IX again!

I'm fairly sure most of you guys would go into a certain state of shock and become somewhat suicidal if you found out you were factory produced leftovers. So to say Zidane's little breakdown (that also gave us one of the greatest pieces of music in the game) is out of character is completely whack.

Why is it so that everyone wants a character to be exactly the same all throughout the games? Would be the most monotone character of all time, if you ask me.

PC version is superior in every way except for the soundtrack. Be sure to youtube the final boss song after beating the game, the PC version's midis don't support the intended vocals.

Some people really need to replay FF7 or have very bad memories of it if they think Cloud was emo. He's only emo in the movie and what came after it.

The original Cloud was a crazy loon hahaha

I remember writing a long post on GameFAQs on why Cloud was not emo before it got removed for unmarked spoilers.

Like, the whole point of Cloud is that he's trying NOT to be emo and be cool instead, shrugging off his issues towards people. It took (seriously gonna toss some major spoilers so don't casually click)
Aeris being killed in front of him in order to have a depressing moment and being sent into camatose and Tifa entering his mind for his problems to actually be revealed. Then after that he becomes more of a typical hero.

smh at those who think cloud is emo.

He was a jerk mostly. Once he gets mako'd, he becomes a little more normal, with the obvious trauma coming into play.

In the movie he's more of an emo with the "i'm no good" attitude.

any Jimmy-Jam update?

I'm considering giving this a go on the PSP.

this really could use an international-international update, maybe a straight port to the 3DS with a new translation and materia/extra boss additions. seems like it would be easy money.

while not being a "remake", just a straight port with some additions.

god you guys act like a normally upbeat character cant ever show any other emotion

wtf kind of attitude is that

i liked zidane's existential crisis

same way i loved locke's arc in ffvi

yeah, i don't think cloud was emo in the original game. Even when sephiroth was trying to show he was a fake, he was like 'lol, now he's gonna show that I'm not in the photo with Tifa'.

I don't mind characters showing emotion. I'm on the side where I think Tidus is a great lead. But Zidanne's monument just felt unneeded and shoved into the game because it was the "thing to do" in this era of RPGs.

It felt shoehorned in and cliche, especially as he conveniently mopes into each room where each duo of friends conveniently shows him the power of friendship.

He was a bit dark in the first part of Midgar but was definitely fine after the plate drops

Do people really think Cloud is emo? The character acts the way he does for a very specific plot reason, and not because it's his personality design. I love FF8 but even I'll be the first to admit Squall is the definition of an emo character, not Cloud.

I still love this game. This was like my first JRPG ever when it first came out. I allowed myself to get drawn into the FF7 world and I was in gaming bliss. I remember seeing the casino for the first time, I was blown away. A full fledged game within a game. I remember not being able to stop the runaway train, and how it affected the entire FF7 universe. It felt like I was playing some kind of movie starring block characters. It was awesome. I put well over 80+ hours into the game (beat it twice). I plan on beating it again for old times sake. Classic game.

One of the reasons I like crisis core so much. Gameplay was meh, and the added bits sucked. But seeing why cloud is who he is was nice.
He went through some traumatic shit, and survived.
I think FF7 might the the only thing he's been in where he *wasn't* emo.

I would find that he was confused and guilty after the plate drop. He definitely wasn't that down.

Crisis Core shown the human normal side to him definitely, too bad he looked like he was wearing make up.

any Jimmy-Jam update?

This week I needed to sort out the fact that I'm 4 years behind on my tax, find out where Vodafone sent my new Android and finish a job so I can pay my mortgage next month. So I'm not playing anything I need to pay attention to basically, but I'm still planning on getting back to it ;)

Is there a difference? I had vocals when I played the game on PC, using the included soundfonts.

I found the weakest point of the PC port to be the poor quality of the FMVs (the FF8 port was a huge step up in this regard). The transitions between static and FMV backgrounds are really jarring. IIRC the game uses DirectShow for playback so maybe you can replace them with better rips in a more modern video format.

Advent Children kinda retroactively changed things for Cloud. After that, he is always assumed to be a pretty mopey guy, despite how in the actual game he cross-dresses to save his friends and actually says "Let's mosey."

I wouldn't even say that Squall is emo per-say, as opposed to having some emo episodes at random spots of the game. But that is still a far cry from Cloud, who starts off as a little bit stoic but goes through most of the game as a rather trusting, somewhat competent leader.

I always took that particular part as a bit of a tongue in cheek jab at VII and VIII (But mostly VIII) and how the protagonists of both games (but mostly Squall) had similar little emotional fits. The fact that he snapped out of it considerably quickly just drove that in even further for me.
