But maybe that is just an industry problem and not a PS2 problem.

To me, it's like comparing the SNES to NES. The SNES has superior versions of popular NES games ... but you need to show respect to the console that introduced so many new IP's, gamestyles, gameplay innovations.

I like PS2 a lot, but relative to the time it was out, it was not as impressive as PS1. Granted, it played PS1 games, and has been a huge workhorse of a console for me (playing tons of games old and new, and doubling as my DVD player). And with backwards compatibility with controllers and games, represented a huge value even early in it's life.

My seems to be on its way to death-- won't play CDs anymore, and makes some funny noises sometimes... just in time to be replaced by PS3.

No. For example Jump & Runs were better on PS1 than on PS2. PS1 has Crash 1-3 in addition to Rayman 2, PS2 just has Rayman 2-3 and Jak 1. Oh and Sonic Heroes, so it mighty be equal.

I bought a ps2 this summer to check out God of War and Shadow of The Colossus. Couldn't find SOTC so rented ICO and fell in love with that game. Then played SOTC and RE4 and MGS2. Best gaming summer ever! (also thanks to COD2)

I believe the PS2 has had the longest uninterrupted life (meaning their next-gen console still hasn't launched) of any console...

Which has binna surprise: I remember Sony about five/six years ago planning the PS3 launch for 2004!
