I would like to see them acquire Bluepoint. I think they’ve proven the relationship to be a success. Give them a chance to do some new IP too.

What is the point in temporary timed exclusive games, much less temporary timed content in games? If you're gonna play kid games, you're gonna get kid prizes. Surely it'd be better to buy some studios and bring them under the PS Studios banner properly?

This isn’t about timed exclusives. It’s about 3rd parties making content solely for Sony.

Yeah, it's like 7 or 8 games.... maybe many more depending on how dependent on PlayStation sales the series or developers are traditionally.

Yeah also I think they're more conservative when it comes to 1st party budgets w/ external devs

If the Silent Hills game is true i'd probably put that in the range of 30 or 40 million, if that.

It's not $329 million for the entire generation. This is just the amount they spent in 7 months on external contracts

They're not going to stop there

Yeah, I get it.
Where did you get that info?
From the thread of their fiscal report

Here is my take and please hear me out till the end as I am someone who owns both new gen systems.

329 mil?, silly. Meanwhile, MS is spending billions on 1st party studios on top acquiring massive 3rd party publishers/studios AND practically giving insane budgets on new titles that are in the works now.

329 mil is very underwhelming if I am being honest and feels like they are being greedy and lazy. I don't know what or how many games will even use $329.

Current game dev budgets are extremely high and for next gen titles seems super low.

Then again I am not an analyst or a financial advisor/expert i an only observing from what I see other companies do.

This doesn't bode well for the future and Sony for me personally though. God of War Raganarok and Ratchet are currently the only games I am looking forward too, and Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2.

While those are solid titles, that's nowhere near enough of they want to compete with folks from Rare, Playground Games, The Inititative, Bethesda studios that includes Arkane, id software, Machinegames, Tangoworks, inXile, Obsidian and others to come.

Sure they have Naughty Dog, but Naughty Dog releases a title like once or twice per generation in a span of 7 or so years. We only got Uncharted 4 which was a good game but a fatigued franchise if you ask me and of course the swan song that was TLOU 2. TLOU 2 was a stellar title that I thoroughly enjoyed despite being pissed off at some of the story elements.

They are gonna need to invest way more money, because right now the amount of games Sony has announced is a small amount compared to MS.

We already have a good road map for MS titles such as Awoved, Fable, Forza Motorsport 8, Forza Horizon 5, Everwild, State of Decay 3, Perfect Dark, Hellblade 2, inXile 1st Person RPG, Halo Infinite and whatever else gets announced this year.

With Sony officially we only know of God Of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank, Returnal, Gran Turismo 7 and Final Fantasy 16. While both companies have promising titles, I just feel that Sony needs to announce more games soon and start investing a bit more money.

Bluepoint not being acquired to this point baffles me. Great job with Shadow of the Colossus and Demons Souls Femake. Wtf you doing? Why you not buy Bluepoimt sony lol.

Maybe I am speaking to early. We gonna have yo wait till this summer too see some new exciting stuff during E3 Digital. Either way, my point still stands, please acquire more studios and/or invest more money in new titles and deals if you wanna keep your customers excited.

I am glad I have both systems, at the end of the day ill be able to enjoy best of both worlds and I highly suggest you do same.

Is this different from the 200-300 million spent for second party stuff or is this the same thread with a new title?

Let’s wait until MS acquisitions actually start producing games on a consistent basis. Sony doesn’t NEED to acquire more studios, but it definitely has the resources to do so. MS on the other hand is desperate to start producing 1st party successes on a consistent basis.

As for Bluepoint, I think it makes perfect sense to test the waters before buying them. I would say that now is the time to buy them.

You have a point in regards to MS being desperate to produce games due to how last gen went on for them, but with same token dude the amount of studios they already have bought and amount of games we already know is quite insane.

I will be first to admit, Microsoft titles and eco system for me is much more fitting as a customer. I love a variety of games, but spend majority of my time MP heavy titles such as Sea of Thieves and Gears.

Microsoft is suffering in the sense that they do not have a critically acclaimed and insane story telling cinematic style 3rd person title such as God of War/Tlou 2 like Sony does. Meanwhile, Sony produces more satisfying single player experiences but lacks severely in MP games. I am sorry but their MP focused games are near none existent and when they do come out, they are complete trash.

I just want both companies to provide excellent content on their platforms regardless whether its multiplayer or single player focused.

I don't want either of them to suffer in terms of public eyes/fans and the critics. I am a critic myself and I worked in the industry since 2013 and been to every single Sony and MS pressers and it was painful to go to some of those pressers and see how one company was severely lacking in titles over the other. The 2018 E3 MS presser was one of my favorite press conferences of last gen, because seeing and being there for the studio acquisitions was hella exciting.

As for Sony, nothing will make more giddy and happy than E3 2015 and E3 2013. Smile on Jack Tretton's face was hilarious and of course Last Guardian, FF Remake, Shenmue 3 and Horizon Zero Dawn in a span of 1 hour was a pipedream come true.

The title is wrong.

They made contracts that will happen in the next 7 years... the total valeu of all contracts to be paid in these 7 years is $330m.

Contract will happen in that timeframe of 7 years but not specific date... so each one will happened at different time... the first probably in this year and the last in the last year of the 7 years time.

It is basically $50m per year.

These are the contracts already signed for the next 7 years.

They've signed contracts and they have a time frame of seven years to fully pay for them, and they might not even need the full 7 years to pay for them.

That also doesn't mean they're not going to sign additional contracts in the next financial year

Yeap... they basically will be paying the contracts as they happened... at least one of the contract ends with 7 years.

Like you said that doesn’t limit to sign others contracts but these will only be posted in future earnings.

Fair enough. I'd still like to see them investing in some of their actual first-party studios, though.
In what way? You can't just dump $100m on a studio and say make more games! There are only so many developers to hire and most studio don't scale well. You can see that in how an AC game is made by 900 people across three studios and the quality is lower than most Sony 1st party studios with 100 people.

Money cannot instantly be spent and create quality products.

What Sony first party has 100 people and make better games than AC?

I agree with you except that with the exception of Bethesda stuff Microsoft first party is still mostly garbage. Im not convinced any of these bethesda games will be permanent exclusives either. As far MS actual first party as of now:

- One year isnt enough to fix the mess that was the halo infinite reveal and 343 continues to have turnover
-Gears studio heads left
-The inaitive director left
-Rares creative director left and they dont even know what kind of game theyre making.
- Last we heard of hell blade they were still picking locations
- Fable and avowed are years away.
-Xbox isnt making the return on investment with game pass yet hence an attempted doubling of xbox gold.
-As of right now xbox has tepid Japanese support at best.

Its not all sunshine and rainbows at MS either.

Not bad. You have to go to the PS OT and complain in “secret” about shitposting and how all the great contributors were “run off”
And then something about precious and zealots and plastic box

Pffff... I don't know what is that even supposed to mean.

Is this just paying the bills of titles currently (or formerly) in development such as Demon's Souls, Returnal, Sackboy, Destruction AllStars, Arrowhead's new game, Death Stranding's new version, etc? Or does it mean that they just locked new partnerships for more exclusives since April and that the combined budget appointed to the development of said titles equals $329M?

Fuck these vague-ass financial statements.
Thats not this year ore last. The spendngs are spread over 7 years, read the article.

So the solution is just to stop investing in your existing first-party studios at all? Especially in Japanese ones? Sony ignoring their former power house of a studio doesn't really help their bad situation over there. The thing with Japan Studio is that Sony have let them either willingly or unwillingly (don't know which one would be worse...) degenerate into a support studio that is allowed to do their own little thing from time to time, like Astro Bot.

Its hard to say if 329 million is alot or not very much because as of now we dont have context for previous budgets or what Microsoft or Nintendos budget for things like this are. Right?

People like to make a lot of comments based on incomplete information about strategies we know ultimately nothing about.
