PlayStation New Zealand Breaks Records

As Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand (SCENZ) looks towards 2016, with the promise of groundbreaking innovation, great games and all round home entertainment services, the company releases 2015 results demonstrating record-breaking momentum.

NPD Group data shows that PlayStation platform value share of the total market grew to 57%, which equates to a 10% increase on the company’s own performance for the previous calendar year. PlayStation 4 accounted for well over half the total console hardware value in 2015 with 59%. In fact, the PS4 overall platform accounted for 65% of the total current generation market value, which includes Nintendo Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One home consoles, games and peripherals.

Record-breaking results were delivered over the 2015 festive period in New Zealand. The Xmas week, was the highest performing of the year, with December 2015 proving to be the highest performing month in New Zealand PlayStation history. Festive season success was also replicated globally by the recently announced results of 35.9 million units sold through – 5.9 million, of which sold during the 2015 festive season.

Luis Gil, NPD, says, “As PS4 maintains its leadership position in the home console market, it is evident that the home entertainment unit has played an instrumental role in the market success of the New Zealand Interactive Entertainment category.”

Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and New Zealand comments; “We are so proud to see the performance of the entire PlayStation business continue to go from strength to strength. We’ve exceeded all expectations in the speed of achieving our major milestones for this year, and welcome the inclusion of PlayStation VR, that will again elevate our proposition by pushing the boundaries of innovative technology. Our New Zealand players hold an invaluable role in making PlayStation the success it is and we’re incredibly proud to enjoy these achievements with them.”

PS4 software success
According to the latest NPD Group results, PlayStation 4 software is outselling its closest competitor by double in both value (110%) and units (106%). PS4 software value and units grew by a booming 78% and 71% respectively compared to the previous year.

Taking players on new adventures with every new software release, 2015’s current generation software line up was the strongest to date. Top 1st party performers were; Bloodborne, The Order: 1886 and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. These titles, along with the inclusion of Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Fallout 4 and Star Wars Battlefront from 3rd party publishers made it a record-breaking year for software.

2016 promises to be another groundbreaking year, with highly anticipated exclusives such as Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Hello Games’ procedurally generated space exploration game, No Man’s Sky and Guerilla Games’ newest action RPG, Horizon Zero DawnTM.

Skate 3 has some pretty crazy legs. Game seems to have gained a large following over the years.

Driver: San Francisco is another surprising one. Didn't know the game was that popular.

Is Mexico the last fort or was it Brazil?

It's pretty much a split in Brazil. The XB1 had an advantage for being much cheaper for a long time, but now the odds are even, the PS4 has been growing like crazy. It might have surpassed the X1 already.

I think Xbox is still the leader by a considerable stretch in Mexico tho. So probably that's the last stretch PlayStation needs to hit hard for global domination.

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
And yet RRP games in NZ are fucken laughable. I remember my mate preordering one of the CoDs last gen, the one before Ghosts and he paid $150NZD from EB. That equals around 75GBP just for the vanilla version.

One more time, with feeling!

Anecdotal, but demand seems to have dropped off a cliff in New Zealand. You can pretty much walk in and get one at major retailers. A friend who works at JB Hi-Fi is pretty much begging people to come in and pick one up. Seems like the early adopters swooped in and post Christmas everyone is re-evaluating priorities. I know I was going to pick one up but decided to clear some debts instead.
