Playstation Plus Premium Service announced [S-CONF]

I think the most dissappointing thing was that the survey list existed, they had some good ideas there.

I liked the idea of token wagering, and trophy competitions between friends. I mean that stuff wasn't on live, and it's something that enhances the community but definitely isn't vital to the core experience.

That sounds like a horrible idea ;). No but really, enough "Butlering" from me today. Does PSN+ finally bring the PSN experience on par with XBL Gold? I was always under the impression that party-chat was the only thing Live really had over the free PSN from a strictly gaming interface perspective. Seems PSN+ is introducing Xgame chat, plus some intriguing extras that I'm going to need to try before I make judgments on.
 
well as long as it doesn't affect online play then im fine, probably less than 10% of the PS3 population will subscribe to this, i don't see the appeal personally
 
As someone who has a Gold subscription, and plays online on both PS3 and Wii - this is a ridiculous offer.

As unfair and annoying as online multiplayer requiring Gold is, the XBL service is amazing. Between the videos, deals of the week, demo's/trials/beta's, chat options etc, I feel like I am using a premium service, and most of it is available for free to Silver users. So yes, the online play is bullshit - but I feel the $45AUD I spend a year on it, to be well worth it.

I look at what PSN+ is offering and have to laugh, the cross-game chat shit (if true) is pathetic. The offering of trials and rentals is about par with what's expected. The only way this could possibly become appealing is if I could keep HEAPS more stuff. But I'll reserve and further criticism until I see the specifics upon release.

On an unrelated side note, the Sony conference was awesome this year. Twisted Metal!!!

I think the only other things are invites through the xmb for every game, and live presence data for every game.
 
I'll also check this out for a year. I have no problem supporting the service initally. I imagine Sony may even continue to add unique features. If it sucks after the 15 months are up, then I won't continue. Simple as that.

I own a PS3, but I simply don't use it enough for this service to be enticing. While there wasn't really anything in the press conference to change my lack of interest.
 
I feel like this is Sony just testing the waters or trying to soften us up for a more inclusive service later.

I'll resist this because it's not my cup of tea, but if they add more features later on that you can currently get free, I guess I'll eventually have no choice.

I don't like this trend. :(
 
I like owning things. This rent stuff I don't like and double dipping I hate even more. I take 1 free game of my choice or 2 minis and all the other stuff and pay without issue. With over a 150 PSN games already and thousands of games over the years this will be weird for me. When I had Sega Channel I stopped buying games for the system completely.


I guess I wish it was more modeled for the people spending on PSN than those that don't. Their in lies the issue I guess.
 
I think I'll probably do it. Plus, the free LBP is a huge incentive. I already own the launch LittleBigPlanet but there are two reasons why I rarely play it anymore. When I'm in the mood I want to just play a level or two and then get back to whatever other game I'm playing and as small as it is, I don't like to switch discs. The other thing is, I always, always have to download a couple of patches when I load the game up. Having a copy on my HDD and getting the patches without any effort on my part will go a long way.

Not until it at least gets the following: -

Cross-game chat (and multiple voice chat channels for that)
Party mode
Demos of all downloadable games
Auto-syncing of trophies
Voice messaging
Cross-game invites in all games
Live status updates for all games
Reputation system
Reporting system
Option to set communications to friends only
Allowing up to 4 gamertags/IDs to sign in at once, regardless of the game
Allowing up to 4 headsets to be used online at the same time
Auto-read message by pressing the guide button when you get a new message
Appear offline option
Ability to delete games from your list where you have 0% of the trophies
The ability to change your PSN ID
Show last game played for offline friends
The ability to queue up content and send/receive messages to consoles from a PC

There's some other stuff, but I guess those are the main things PSN is missing - and is still missing even with PSN+.
 
Considering I've already purchased every PSN game I had any interest in (Noby Noby Boy and uh..that's it) I have zero use for anything PSN+ offers.

At a minimum - the bolded have to be included before I would pay a dime for PSN.

Still... PSN with Free Online play is glorious.
 
I'm guessing the "early demos" aren't actually "early" at all, and are in actuality demos that you can get on time for paying a subscription fee, while everyone who doesn't pay has to wait for them.

I really hate this subscription crap.
 
I am not sure what many here are complaining about. Ok, i see the point that cross-chat and cross-invite should be provided to the normal PS3 user who doesnt want to pay for online play. But compared to the Xbox Live! service you get more for your 50$. Fact. And the possibility to test-play games to make a purchase decision sweetens the deal. Only question is, do i need cross-chat and such features? I yes, the 50$/year are well worth it, considering you can invite friends for cross-chatting. So i really dont see why many of you make such a big deal of the 50$ price point. And for some reason MS can get away with their payed service, mainly featuring cross-chat and cross-invite (as the main features) as the only significant differentiator to the overall free PSN service. Kinda contradicting, isnt it?
But i have to menton that you can get the gold membership for Live! for less than 50$. That would be the only point for discussion, otherwise the PS+ service is quite worth the 50$ if you are a real dedicated gamer who always wants to be the first one to get your hands on new stuff and try out games before the actual demos of them come out (that would be the optimal case for the PS+ service if gamers would get access to games prior to the release of their demos, otherwise that feature would lack the impact/right to exist).

That's not a fact. It's completely subjective.

No. A lot of people who prefer PSN like it because Sony doesn't charge for basic features like online play. I don't think anyone has an issue with them charging for value-added services like Qore and 'free' PSN games, but charging for basic features like voice chat and auto-patching flies in the face of the philosophy that Sony has followed for PSN up to this point.

Do you really? How familiar are you with the Xbox Gold service? Yeah, it doesn't offer EXCLUSIVE ACCESS! to betas and demos and it doesn't let you own games as long as you're subscribed, but it the new PSN doesn't have a lot of the futures that gold Live has. And I'm not saying that to cause a ruckus, it's just a fact as far as we know with what has been announced for +. All the "early access" stuff is neat but really, it doesn't compare to stuff like party chat. It's the more basic stuff that PSN needs, not all these fluff features.

I think this is important because otherwise you would feel a pressure to never cancel the subscription in fear of loosing all your "rented" games you accumulated.

Right. And since you get access to PSN games for the entire time, you can beat them many times over in a year before your subscription runs out anyway. I know I have a number of early PSN games I have not played probably in a year or two anyway.
 
Yeah its interesting as this is just an upgrade bonus stuff for PS-fans, no need to pay if you dont want it. I actually hope that they would have cut the firmware updates and stuff out of this too. Keep the basic functionality free for all.

In europe they are throwing in a downloadable version of PS3 LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout, some Minis garbage etc. so thats already getting content for the money.

Surely they will mostly give out the less popular PSN titles as freebies every month, but still, atleast im paying for actual games and content instead of for just playing online.

And the trial games are full games that are time-limited. So thats interesting to see.

Will buy for a year and see if its worth it or not! :D
 
you know sony could hire some enginers to develope a PS2 emulator for PS3 with the money they are getting from the PSN+ service.
 
I thought they should have included Quore in the Plus subscription. I've never felt the need to pay money for Quore but it would be a nice little extra incentive I guess?

If you could collect all of the "free" stuff during your subscription period and own it if you chose to stop subscribing I would try it... but it seems like this is a way of trapping you once you have a large library of linked stuff and you don't want to give it up. It's a hostage situation.

Also, I hate auto patching... I like to control when that happens. Might as well call it auto-bricking, as I bet that will happen again someday.

I think we can be pretty sure that pretty much every single improvement to PSN from now on will be for the + service.

This is my main concern, and the stumbling block for me in securing my decision to subscribe or not. I have many games such as this, that I have not played in a very long time. If these are the type of games which we can expect to get for free each month (dear mother of god I do not want the first couple games to be: Wipeout, PAIN, and Velocity Bowling whatever) If they stick to a newly released title for that month or the previous month (depending upon when they give out the "free" games) this will be key.

Also, an unintended consequence of this is that I may buy less games if I'm not positive of what the free game will be.

In general it's like everyone in the games industry is trying to get in your pocket every month. And they will do whatever is needed to do so. It's just getting me frustrated with the industry.

Does microsoft even do anything to people who are frequently reported? With PSN reporting doesn't make as much sense because the person in question can just create a new account w/ very little repercussions. I think the "Avoid this player" system is fine for PSN.

That would delete ALL trophies would it not? They would only delete trophies from games that you got with the + sub. So you may need to rework your SQL command

Sony made the mistake (from a business standpoint, not consumer) of giving out too much for free, so there isn't much left over to charge for. I guess they were forced to because PSN its original state was expensive at any price. :D

I wonder if Sony plans to sell subscription cards in-store and online like MS does with XBL Gold. XBL Gold retails for $50/year, but it's pretty easy to find it on-sale for $30 a year or get free sub time via sales, i.e. buy game_x, get a free 3 month sub card. So while PSN+ doesn't look appealing at $50, maybe at $30 it would warrant a second look.

It's easy to shit on XBL but unless you actually have both services then you won't understand.

(Oh and Sony, give us an option to "mute all". The screeching sound of up to 24 different blue tooth headsets raping my speakers needs to stop.)
 
What was that independent film service that was supposed to appear on PSN?
I would gladly pay a subscription for something like that.

Sony did make one smart move though like i thought they would they've locked away Beta access behind the subscription wall.

Would also agree Xbox Live just feels better from a user standpoint. Coming from Live to PSN was a massive shock as obviously you get used to things being done in a nice easy way then to come over to another service and not being able to do certain things can be frustrating.
