Playstation VR GDC Presentation: March 15th

Not at all. PSVR doesn't work on PC (officially) and neither do VIVE/RIFT on PS4. PSVR's target audience is only the PS4 install base.

While this may be true, we know how many PS4's currently exist (based on sales); That makes the barrier to entry ONLY the price of the headset/bundle for that segment. We also know the minimum requirements to run the other headsets, which is a decent chunk of change. I can see people being introduced/starting VR on the PSVR, and perhaps moving on to the others in a few years when the PC price drops in half.

Mass adoption generally requires something to be cheap/affordable.

here is my bet:

$449 for the headset only ($399 very possible)

$569 for the headset, camera, and 2 (move?) controllers. ($519 if it's $399 for the headset)

Edit: As for the date... I'd say between June 19 and June 25

The whole point of launching a product at cost, the USP of PSVR.

That is the problem Oculus and Vive are having. Even if they launched the headsets at cost there is still a hefty fee attached for a capable PC. The userbase that has a good enough pc is considered a niche market. For these reasons I've been expecting the PSVR to be the one leading the mass market. In a couple years (2-3) however I expect it to be an entirely different ball game. By that point we will have new revisions (if not more than one revision), and PC's that are starting to be average consumer priced that can support the Oculus/Vive.

My price prediction:

$299 PSVR Headset, alone with Playroom VR (VR basic kit June launch)
$399 PSVR Headset+Camara+2 Move controllers+Playroom VR (VR Deluxe set June Launch)
$599 PS4+PSVR Headset+Camara+2 Move controllers+Playroom VR(This X-mas VR bundle.)

People are saying that $299 for the headset is impossible, but when it happens those same people will say that it's not a big deal.
PS3 was the only time that Sony's game division didn't blow price estimates out of the water, but only because of widespread ignorance of the cost of BD-ROM drives at the time.

I hope it is not 1000 + dollars here in Brazil.
It would also be nice to have no mans sky as a launch title. Would just love to dive in that universe and stare at horizons.

I know it will be there!

Everyone seems to come with a bundled vr game wonder what sonys will be

Expecting PlayRoom VR to be the introductory free game, RIGS may be bundled in the more expensive SKU but I doubt it. I don't know putting what seems to be the best initial line-up game is the best idea, as all the bought and paid for experiences could pale in comparison, but then you could have people hooked on your product much easier. Decisions, decisions.

Man, these predictions...people are gonna be disappointed come March 15th.

$399 headset only
$499 headset + camera + move controller

Told ya :)

$299 Headset only, available online.
$349 Headset+ Camera retail, including a digital game

Launch Summer (June/ July) alongside Eve Valkyrie, No Man's Sky VR (day and date with regular version), Rigs, and a few others. Dreams VR heavily featured during presentation.

My 2cps.

If it comes out in summer I'll get one and only one PC headset. If it doesn't come until fall I'll probably fold and get both pc headsets to compare and play with (only keep one)

The real question: would $299 deflat the other VR competition?

A good price for PSVR is good for everyone - rising tide raises all boats etc. PC and PS4 are different audiences, and initially these three and gearVR are about growing awareness of VR and building a sustainable addressable market for developers. For that, volume is king and price absolutely helps.

Oculus and HTC won't care if PSVR is 80% market share - that just means more people owning = more development for their own headsets.

That is the problem Oculus and Vive are having.

Are they? As we see the PSVR trying push more units and become mainstream, VIVE/RIFT's markets are polar opposites TBH. They fully understand the enthusiast demographic and are catering to them, pushing far superior technology forward, hence the cost - like any high end 1ST gen hardware in consumer electronics. The last thing we need is another stagnant scene in the desktop GPU/CPU market, for the next 5 years. Let's be honest, w/o VR, Polaris and Pascal gains, wouldn't be remotely similar to what see/expect today.

$250 for the headset standalone

$350 with accessories and game voucher, OK so everyone is saying $300 oh gawd....

Sony is going to price the PS VR at $300

I think there is less likely to be bloodshed and wailing if you assume $399 headset only, with a small chance you'll be pleasantly surprised at a lower price. Hoping for $299 with IMO a likely increase of $100 (33% above your hoped for price) is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

My prediction is no release date or price. Simply a long showing with the release date, price and launch lineup being announced at E3. My prediction is September 13th, 2016 with a retail price of $499.99.

Agreed. This is GDC, not a consumer event. I expect this to be the beginning of Sony's push for PSVR, hence the press invite. They'll confirm a delay, announce E3 as the conference where we'll get all the launch details, then show off their titles, and talk about the things they've learned about VR. The disappointment is going to be monumental, judging from this thread.

I don't consider the cost of system entry a factor at all with Vive/Rift/PSVR. There's effectively no overlap between these two groups:

1. People who are realistically considering being first gen adopters of premium VR devices.
2. People who don't already own a PS4 or high end gaming PC.

The amount of people who look at PSVR (the cheapest solution) and buy a PS4 just for it is going to be totally insignificant.

Also if we're talking mass market Gear VR, and be extension Oculus, will be the leaders for a long time to come. If we're only talking about high end VR experiences Sony will most likely be the leader in terms of units sold, but it won't be anything resembling mass market adoption.

True mass market adoption will only happen with a standalone or smartphone dependent solution. Premium VR will always be niche.
As premium anything is, really.

So this just tracks your head and not your body? if i was to move my body with my head it wouldnt track it ?

It has limited positional tracking. You can lean in/out, stand up, walk around a little etc but you may encounter sensing error, due to the camera limitation.

There's a Playroom VR demo where you can dodge your head with the PSVR as other players attack you.

I tested London Heist demo (car chase) where I (as the character) was suppose to be seated in the car. But I stood up, and in the demo I clipped through the car roof

How do you move your body without also moving your head? It can know approximately where your body is by your head position. And with games that use ps move, it can also track where your hand is, giving it more data to estimate where your body position is.

Can i turn my head left when my body is in the same position?

Hopefully it launches with some interesting games or content, because that's pretty much what keeps me from buying an Oculus/Vive, I love the tech but there's nothing right now that makes me want to own one of these.

Interesting to find out what Sony has in store, but why did it have to be on the same day as the apple event for 5SE and Air 3. Hopefully not at the same time though.

We need one final price/launch date prediction thread. To laugh at when we find out the truth.

Oh god, not another one :D

We've had like 60 threads with guesses ranging from 250-600 dollars with every 50 dollar increment in between.

*oh but maybe it's a bundle with move controllers!!!!!*

The absolute pinnacle of boring, predictable threads :')
