PM May says internet must now be regulated following terror attack

I am all for them regulating the internet, as long as it is entirely focused on monitoring and stopping extremists.

This is an impossibility. You're actually for spying on everyone. All the while, the government is incapable of actually doing much with it and instead likely will end up fucking up some innocent's life.

The government has plenty of information. They have just failed to actually address it.

It's a tragedy in itself that she is using this tragedy to pursue her own agenda. She is a despicable human being. The country needs to do what's right and not vote for her.

Quoting myself :

Theresa May is using this awful attack to push her Big Brother agenda yet again. She keeps saying something "must be done" about the internet - but terrorism has existed long before the internet ever did. Also, so far, every single terrorist has been on a watchlist, so I don't see how throwing hay onto the haystack, by putting civilians in our free democracy under blanket surveillance will help.

She says "we can't carry on as normal", and then suggests doing exactly what the terrorists want, removing our own freedom and civil liberties from ourselves.

The security services want more funding to tackle the problems they already know about, they don't need nor want the ability to see which memes I have been looking at this year.

Do these pollies in favour of limiting access to porn not think there won't be major backlash? Porn is literally the biggest part of the internet. Billions of people watch it daily. Yeah I'm sure they will all go quietly along with it.

Banning some porn and sex acts certainly distracted people from all the peadophilia government coverup stories in 2014.

There were some interesting protests, that was about it.

Same is happening now to distract from police cuts and foreign policy, both of which Jeremy Corbyn, her opponent, is better at.

The Conservative manifesto pledges regulation of the internet, including forcing internet providers to participate in counter-extremism drives and making it more difficult to access pornography.

Oi! Don't you dare block Pornhub.

They already do, websites get shutdown, social media is reported etc. The tools are already available.

May is overstepping while not funding the police properly.

She is literally instrumentalising the victims of a terrorism attack to push her authoritarian agenda. It's appalling.

That's not how freedom works.

But the idea of taking the freedoms away from some people to protects others is exactly how it will be sold and as your post evidences a lot of people will go for it.

It's a lie and a very effective one.

What an evil, callous person she is, exploiting a tragedy like this to push her authoritarian, anti civil liberties dogma. Absolute disgrace of a PM and of a human being, she makes me sick to my stomach.

Just using it as an excuse to again try to push through her big brother policies.

It's probably only a matter of time before we see a Great British Firewall.

For the love of god UK, you were dumb enough to vote Brexit but don't vote this psychotic bitch in. I can't live under this authoritarian regime for the next four years.

Terrorists are probably using end-to-end encryption apps to communicate now and VPNs to hide their IP addresses.

Blanket internet policies are useless.

You need to hack into VPN servers and get decryption keys to fight these guys.

Unfortunately that is neither how the internet works, or how the likes of May's government have actually proposed regulating it.

To take the most obvious example: Their push for a 'backdoor' in all encryption serves to fundamentally weaken the general protections of all users of such encryption, which is anyone with access to the internet and/or a smart device. Because that creates a fundamental point of access that you cannot guarantee will be limited solely to the police acting upon an authorised criminal investigation.

And therein lies much of the problem. The most obvious means of limiting terrorists' ability to use the internet safely - even outside of any debate of how politicians might try to cram in other, broader, unrelated powers - ultimately mean limiting everyone's ability to use the internet safely. And yes, it will be the most obvious means, because the Conservatives have shown no greater understanding of the sort of nuance needed, or the willingness to fund the police so that carte blanche approaches are not necessary.

It never got really bad until facebook/twitter entered the internet.
Meaning what though? That there weren't terrorist attacks before? That there wasn't recruitment before? And how does that relate to targeting porn? Because porn was incredibly huge on the internet before even Myspace.

When will people realize that these terrorists are ideologically conservative. If anything, doing crap like this only reinforces their world views and strengthens them.

Of course it's porn, after all radicals will likely watch a lot of it!

Oh wait, that's because people with girlfriends are less likely to be radicals...

It's insanity that she's going to win. The UK must hate itself. But not as much as it hates foreigners.

The past year or so has shown me that a huge chunk of the population of this disgusting shithole of an island would destroy their own children's futures so long as immigrants suffer the same. Reprehensible fucking slime.

I mean isn't porn like something Isis and a lot of Muslim extremists hate? I think they would welcome anti porn movements rather than somehow stop their planning because of it.

Terrorists haven't won though...
Obviously done to appear strong and stable in the face of terror.

Except they have won, they've been winning since Sept 11, 2001.

Every time there's an attack, conservatives overact and we lose more of the freedom we used to have. There's an entire group of people who are scared to leave their house because they think they'll be killed in an attack.

They're the people who vote for people like May or Trump. We've seen it play out time, and time again. An attack happens, conservative politician spews some crap, says it's to try to prevent another attack, and they get rewarded with votes.

Meanwhile, the terrorist groups sit back and laugh their asses off at the result of them getting exactly what they want. Killing people isn't their main goal. Their main goal is to keep the western nations in a constant state of fear, as it's easier to control them. This also allows them to keep manipulating western leaders into keeping the War on Terror going, thus making it easier for them to gain more supporters, cause more attacks and keep the whole fucking cycle going.

Labour fucked up picking Corbyn.

They should be winning

What would be the point if it wasn't Corbyn? UK's labour government went into Iraq sparking a lot of this shit.

Corbyn is the best bet for real change. Shame the country is obsessed with refugees and Islam instead, not hard to understand why with media reporting, often citing Islam as the reason for terrorism.
