PM May says internet must now be regulated following terror attack

Like others have said this will not prevent people using vans and knifes to commit terror attacks, would it not be better to do checks on people who hire rental vehicles, I could be wrong but I think the van was a hired vehicle, not saying this would help massively but could make it a little bit tougher for potential terrorists.

I hope nobody buys this bullshit.

Sadly, they will. Between the religious folks, the people who don't understand how the internet works, and the people who are scared of any person with a skin color that isn't white, they'll gobble this up.

Hopefully, there's enough people that understand what's actually going on to counteract the people I listed above.

What's the point of having a terrorist attack if you don't use it for a power grab?

Sadly, this is too predictable. Why do you think we in the US are scared more than usual about attacks? It's because our 'leaders' will use it to enact laws worse than the patriot act.

Leaving out that stopping people becoming radicalised online through ISIS propaganda could stop some of these people committing such acts. All you have to do is buy a cheap van or use a car or MPV.

It's sad, but this reaction is not surprising at all. I've actually already given up hope and I'm convinced the open internet as we know it now, won't exist anymore in 10 years.

So it seems like once again the community had reported at least one of the attackers to the authorities. The information was given to the police, no need to scour the internet looking for radicalised young men.

If we can't deal with the people reported through current terrorism measures I don't understand how scouring the internet is going to give us better outcomes.

Except they have won, they've been winning since Sept 11, 2001.

Every time there's an attack, conservatives overact and we lose more of the freedom we used to have. There's an entire group of people who are scared to leave their house because they think they'll be killed in an attack.

They're the people who vote for people like May or Trump. We've seen it play out time, and time again. An attack happens, conservative politician spews some crap, says it's to try to prevent another attack, and they get rewarded with votes.

Meanwhile, the terrorist groups sit back and laugh their asses off at the result of them getting exactly what they want. Killing people isn't their main goal. Their main goal is to keep the western nations in a constant state of fear, as it's easier to control them. This also allows them to keep manipulating western leaders into keeping the War on Terror going, thus making it easier for them to gain more supporters, cause more attacks and keep the whole fucking cycle going.

I live in the US, so I don't really have room to throw stones but... this seems super dumb and shortsighted

There's a precedent for backdoors that governments would like to have being accessed by nefarious people

Also, unless I'm making this up, terrorist cells use fucking crazy forms of communications that would be fucking impossible to block

Iirc there were people planning something by shooting messages in the wall of an fps game (I forget which)

Game didn't keep track of /where/ and in what order the bullet holes were arranged so there was zero record of the conversation. Big Brother shit like this will only serve to fuck shit up harder somewhere down the line

Edit: also banning porn is so fucking silly. If it was targeted at shit like beastiality or cp that's very reasonable but porn in general is goddamn stupid.

Edit2: it'll be much easier to drive over a lot of people with a lot of trucks if said trucks drive themselves and have government mandated backdoors. Now is the wrong time to do this.

We can't deny the role the internet plays in terrorism. But just straight op monitoring and building in back doors everywhere is not a very good solution. They'll have end to end encryption anyway on private apps if they want.

The thing that needs to be looked at is how major internet companies like Google and Facebook can prevent the spreading of terrorist sympathizers and messages on their platforms.

Why is porn linked to this, or did May slip up like the idiot she is and out her true goal of control and dictatorship over internet usage?

man regulating the internet must be the holy grail for euro politicians. i hope people fight them on this.

She just kept her mouth shut after Cameron resigned and let everyone else going for party leadership ruin their own chances
That was quite hilarious. The outcome though. Then again. We could have had Liam Fox, or Gove, or Ledsom.

Oooof.

You get this shit from May. Then you get this from Corbyn:

Wow May. Please go fuck off a cliff with that garbage.

Many people were hurt and killed in a horrific attack and all you care about is porn?!

And the nanny state UK increases without it having any impact on terror prevention. This is why the terrorists win. Because while we take our shoes off, ban laptops, no longer get to carry larger than 100ml of cologne, have our phones, internet tapped, the terrorists move on. You are crazy if you think these draconian measures under the guise of 'safety' or 'security' won't be abused. In the UK, every inch of cities like London are watched with cameras, I remember reading they wanted microchips in garbage can to gauge how many were recycling or using etc. The surveillance is enough to make China blush.

Go ahead regulate Whatsapp, the internet to think it'll make a difference but don't provide funding for MI5 struggling to watch these individuals.

I thought everyone wanted the government to regulate the internet, how are you going to have net neutrality without someone to play the internet police?

You guys are beginning to see the danger of government regulation, once they get their mitts on something, there's no letting go. Even if it's a complete disaster.

Still trying to comprehend the leap in logic that led to porn somehow being a factor here...

She can piss off with all of this either way, though.

She's gonna win but a lot of my faith in the country would be restored if she didn't...

This party and it's leader are the enemy of the people.

She should be talking about regulating the press coverage of terrorism.

Try that before turning the country into an Orwellian state.

If the uk had a non hysteric press without if it bleeds it leads mentality they wouldn't be such a target.
