PM May says internet must now be regulated following terror attack

We can't deny the role the internet plays in terrorism. But just straight op monitoring and building in back doors everywhere is not a very good solution. They'll have end to end encryption anyway on private apps if they want.

The thing that needs to be looked at is how major internet companies like Google and Facebook can prevent the spreading of terrorist sympathizers and messages on their platforms.

And that is why you need to ensure there's proper funding to the police departments and intelligence agencies.

Instead, the UK government cut funding and as a result, you've got understaffed agencies that are having to do more, with less.

I mean...i kind of understood the purpose of it all until porn entered the picture, and now i'm just..what?why?...how...why?

Hmm, what could go wrong when stuff like this was actually a thing.

Has there been any news on how these attacks were performed. Any reasons to suspect the internet was the cause, and that surveillance would have actually stopped it?

A friend of one of the attackers warned authorities of him becoming radicalised. Just like Manchester...lack of people is a bigger issue than meaningless internet surveillance. Terrorists will find new means to communicate while the rest of us lose more and more of our rights and privacy.

Just gonna quote myself from the last thread on this topic, to spread my memes:
If it was me in power, censoring my enemies would seem wise. Only difference is that my enemies would be real fascists, the types who ask to bring back the gas chambers in YouTube comments. Also censoring climate change deniers would seem like a good idea too, that type of misinformation is a global security risk. Don't know how far the slippery slope would take me though. Anybody who had wrong ideas about economics or domestic policy might be seen as a threat to progress

It's kinda like how Light contemplates eventually just killing people for stupidity in Death Note. Stupidity is one of the greatest sources of evil after all, maybe it should be banned or regulated on the internet somehow. Education is the traditional way to fight stupidity but it's not so effective when people just reject facts

Guys. UK is not going to ban porn. Because banning porn would make every one get a paid proxy. That would make monitoring way difficult.

China doesn't ban porn. Think about it.

On one hand, it's unsettling to hear talk of regulating the internet starting to creep into western on the government.

On the other hand, it's the natural result of us not holding the big players the likes of Google, Facebook and Twitter accountable for properly regulating their own platforms, and creating the environment for this. Terrorist and hate groups have been using popular platforms for years, and so far the response has been ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Everything that's happening now we saw the potential for years ago, and Silicon Valley chose to ignore it. Now it may no longer be up to them.

I'm made uncomfortable by the conversation, but I can't honestly say I know what side I stand on.
