Podcast that you liked and now don't like?

years ago i used to listen to GAMING STEVE.

dark days, friends. dark days.
LMAO. That was the first gaming podcast I ever listened to.

And I thought "this is awesome--it's a dude talking about video games for two hours. I wonder if there are more of these?"

Then I listened to a couple different gaming podcasts and thought, "oh, well, yeah, Gaming Steve is kind of shit then, isn't it?"

I'm doing this new thing (well it's not new as TRL pioneered it) where I record weekly podcasts in the future and then go into the past and not post them so even though I have 57 episodes, posting them on the internet is like showing titties on prime-time... America just isn't ready for me yet
because I'm just to damn awesome

Here's a run-down of my potential weekly podcast listening:

ListenUP: totally went down hill since the conversion from 1up Yours, especially in terms of individual personalities. Sort of enjoyed Garnett, Davidson, and Ellis, but not nearly as much as the old crew. Probably better than this podcast has faded off into the sunset before it hit rock bottom.

PlayerOne: Strictly last-resort listening material for the commute to work. Some good laughs, but tends to be light on substance.

Giant Bombcast: Like the crew, but enough substance, especially considering they typically clock in at 2+ hours.

CAGcast: Hit or miss on game-related content, but I love CheapyD and Wombat. Never miss this one. CheapyD has become much less of a 360 fanboy, too.

Joystiq: Despite what GAF'ers think of Joystiq, I still love their podcast because it's loaded with current content and lots of good humor. Although it sucks when Justin is absent.

Mobcast: Enjoy the format, but needs a consistent crew. Oh, and NO MORE DONAHOE, please.

RebelFM: Arthur is always grouchy and pretty anti-PS3 as of late. Anthony is sometimes too cocky. Tyler is pretty worthless. Oh, and dick and fart jokes get old real quick unless they're in a Kevin Smith film.

Full Moon Show: Always great, but only if you're into Insomniac stuff.

Out of the Game: Love the crew, but not enough consistency to the episode releases.
Wow, thanks for the rundown. You really should check out Idle Thumbs, the podcast is pretty incredible. It has an incredible face pace, great editing, distinctive hosts, with loads of oddball humor. There are so many funny bits in the podcast. If you want to be semi-recent I suggest starting with episode 42, where they read videogame related dreams people submitted (the J Allard one is priceless.) Although look for the episode where they talk about the Horsebag. Jesus christ I cried at that one.

I ctrl+f'd Idle Thumbs and was pleased to see that all the mentions were in "this podcast is awesome" sentences.

You have learnt well, GAF.

I use to like Gamers with Jobs...but slowly it started to annoy me and I became increasingly uniterested in the podcast.

Their lack of knowledge in some cases on topics they decide to discuss was most annoying imho...
this.
Rebel FM has improved with Tyler, but the farting bores me.
Listen Up is a train wreck.

For the record: Jordan, Jesse Go! is the BEST.

It's like being in a bizarro 2006. I thought everyone hated the angry-gamer skits. oh well. :lol

No way I loved all the running gags and spoofing game industry celebrities! They were the only ones with a video game comedy show. Other game podcasts are like someone reading forum threads into a microphone.

I still listen to it, but the Mediocre Show hasn't been as entertaining since the better of the co-hosts left earlier this year.

Major Nelsons podcast. E is annoying. I don't care about most of the games that they talk about. It is a walking ad to promote some really bad games. They act like we buy every single XBLA title out there. :lol

I used to listen to this too and exact reason I stopped. THey hyped Turok so much on there, and then I saw it ont ehs helves a few days before release and bought it. Maybe the worst game I have played on this or last generation. I stopped after that episode.

I also used to like PC gamer podcast, but always hated Logan Decker, annoying voice. But the thing that threw me over the edge was one episode him going off on people pirating games. And then about 3-4 episodes later admits he pirated a copy of Assassin's Creed to play, and then bitched becuase it crashed. That's when I stopped listening to it.

I've narrowed down my podcasts to Rebel FM, Giant Bomb, and Idle Thumbs.

I still like RebelFM because the chemistry and discussion is different and little more in-depth and focused (outside of the fart, cat, and cock jokes) than the others which tend to be more ADD laden. Really liked that one episode when they had the editor on to talk about how people new to writing can become better journalists. What's become annoying is that reader mail turned got all Girl-Age and I really, really wished they had a little more to do with music.

I'll listen to the Giant Bomb until the end of time, they're like the A-Team to me. Even if the formula does get a little stale between the punctuated bits of humor.

I can replay episodes of Idle Thumbs over, and over, and over.

Well, I also listen to This American Life, but whatever.

the hate for podcast beyond disgusts me :< fucking haters!!!

anyway. i stoppeed listening to the kojima productions report after ryan payton left.

A few months back I was on the verge of abandoning Rebel FM but they've turned it around in the past few weeks by cutting down on the immature/toilet humor.

I use to listen to a lot of podcasts mentioned already here but cut down due to overlapping talks of the same thing.

Mobcast, Major Nelson, Gamers With Jobs, and Listen up are now on the "No Fly" list for me. They just seem to not have that magic they use to have that made you get pulled into what they were talking about.

The only ones I listen to now is Giant Bombcast, RebelFM and the podcast I am on which I won't mention since it would be in bad taste (you can find it easy through google if you want).

I tend to like my podcasts when they have that round table discussion in the sense of just a couple of guys talking about what they love in an off the cuff kinda way.

I think less free time to listen to podcasts has contributed more to a drop off in my itunes subscription then lower quality, plus when the news/game cycles are slow there is only so much that can be talked about.

I do miss the game theory podcast.

I like the Bombcast, Out of the Game and GFW Radio because they talk about non-gaming stuff all the time and when they do talk about games they do it in a humorous manner. I know a lot of people are annoyed when they do that and complain about lack of substance but I'm the opposite. If I want to know about serious industry news I think browsing GAF is enough for me.

I used to listen to CAGcast religiously, but I cannot bring myself to listen to it now. My main complaint is CheapyD's attitude. He is constantly whining and complaining; I swear he sounds like a 5 year old that just drop his ice cream. Also, he has a very 'me first' view of the world, which results in him skipping podcast recordings to play a video game (then bragging about it) to talking about a very important (I use the term loosely) toilet break.

He has always been like this, but he has just gotten a lot worse these last few months. I don't know how Wombat puts up with him.

I don't think anyone listens to him for news though. And he admits that's now what his show is about. It's because he's like the one white dude in Japan peripherally connected to games that does a weekly podcast. There's a novelty that just isn't found in 99% of gaming podcasts which are based in America and SF/Bay Area.

I wasn't complaining about the lack of gaming talk or gaming news. I like it when a gaming podcast dives into a non-gaming story. I find it a nice break from the routine.

As for the Japan talk, the vast majority of his occasional Japan talk centers around how backwards tipping is in America and how great customer service is in Japan. If that makes you happy, more power to you. However, don't tease the notion he's doing large dissertations on Japan, he is not. It's not surprising he doesn't dive deeper into Japan culture since he cannot speak the language, which is starting to get a little sad since he has lived in the country for multiple years.

As a general rule of thumb, no podcast should run over one hour. The most frequent reason I drop podcasts is because they are insufferably long and offer little substance.

I see little point in bothering to listen to a podcast unless it's at LEAST an hour, if not more.

Also, I'd be horribly worried about seeing the podcast I'm on show up in here with people bitching about it if people actually listened to the show in the first place. *laughs*

To the people listing what podcasts they listen to: WHY AREN'T (MOST OF) YOU LISTENING TO IDLE THUMBS?

annoying personalities. Tried like 3-4 times. Meh.

RebelFM (see above).

I will give up Listenup shortly once Garnett leaves.

That said. My regular playlist of:

PLAYERONE
BOMBCAST
^ my favourites. I actually like P1 best.

GEEKBOX
BITMOB

are still up and running. :)

bitmob has gone waaaaay downhill ever since Robert Ashley stopped frequenting

I have a few podcasts with the (!) not-updating-anymore-since-you-don't-listen icon next to them in iTunes...

Gamers With Jobs - Just became the same discussion every episode after awhile.

Player One Podcast - Only listened a couple times, never grew on me.

Idle Thumbs - The opening theme was awesome, but the personalities never grabbed me.

At1up & Good Grief - I don't think I ever really listened to these. The post 1upocalypse personalities are just blah.

Ones I can't live without incluuuuude...

RebelFM - Anthony is my favorite "internet gaming personality". I actually really like Arthur. He seems like a guy you can sit down and have just a fun argument with. And Tyler is just a fun character.

Bombcast - Because it's fucking rad.

Geekbox - My inner geek is so far in the closet it's sad. This show lets me geek out on things I'm interested in but don't indulge in. And I agree that Gabrielle Anwar is gross.

Gamespy - RebelFM + Geekbox = buys.

Out of the Game & A Life Well Wasted - When they update, they rule.

Retronauts - If only Sharkey was on this more often....

Retronauts. Mainly because there hasn't been a topic I've been interested in for months, and all of the best personalities who made it awesome are now gone.

I seem to be one of the few people on GAF who still listens to and enjoys The Hotspot after everyone bailed. It's not nearly one of the best podcasts out there, but it's still an entertaining 90 minutes for me.

One of my favorite podcasts was The Giant Bombcast. I loved this show. It was so great to hear Jeff and Ryan banter back and forth covering various topics. I really enjoyed it.

Then THEY came. I tried to listen, honest, I did. It just wasn't the same. I didn't like listening to four people talking. It felt different, but not in the good way. It didn't improve on the formula that Jeff and Ryan had.

Wow.. majority of the podcasts i listens to got ragged, like Giant Bomb, Listen Up and PS Nation. :D

Personally, I couldn't stand Drunken Gamer Radio, I can't stand one of them (could be Moe, I'm not really sure) that kept on yelling and shouting for no apparent reason.

Any of you guys ever listened to TalkRadar? I find them to be really enjoyable.

Gaming Steve ... :lol

He used to talk about the Spore, years before it came out, for fucking hours. Interviewing Will Wright, talking about socio-political-religious themes the game will have, dreaming up modes and shit. He probably shot himself when the full game came out.

Rebel FM

Fat Penis or something shit. Go away.

Geekbox

Bleeeeeeeeeergh

Major Nelson

e apparently found "lolspeak" hilarious, and Major Nelson is always trying so hard to sound hip and cool, when really he's the least hip and cool man on the planet. He'll probably try and rap the next Inside Xbox to appear more street. Oh, and they're corporate shills, and that makes terrible radio.

Pretty much all gaming podcasts. Used to like 1UP Yours when they had Luke Smith, kept listening for a while after that and eventually got sick of it. CGW/GFW were also very cool and I still enjoy out of the game. The worst has got to be Major Nelson, it's just shilling and not even interesting. Best crappy shill podcast was the IGN Nintendo one, now they knew how to make shit up and get excited over nothing. Most gaming podcasts just have too much overlap, and I don't care about the majority of stuff they're talking about.

Still listening to: occasional alphaism, iplaywinner, out of the game.

When available:
Out of the game - intelligent disection of industry related topics
A life well wasted

Weekly dose;
Bombcast
Game Scoop
Beyond
Joystiq
Podtoid

The rest:
Listen up
Rebel FM
interactive distractions
CAGcast - mostly talking about their lives
Geekbox - rarely topics that interest me
Retronauts - rarely do the shows interest me
Player1 - don't find myself listening too often anymore
4player podcast - impressions of games
analoghype

When I think of idle thumbs it reminds me of the podcast where they basically bashed re5, annoying at the time and re5 turned out to be a really good game.

The Idle Thumbs crew not rocking enough Fubu or sporting enough mean mugs for you?

Here's what I'm rocking

I thought I was done with the Bombcast. Jeff's smug, smarmy, cynical attitude was getting me down. ...but after a few weeks off, I came crawling back. It's still the podcast with the most personality.

The inexplicably maligned Joystiq Podcast still rules my roost, though. :D

I highly recommend At 1-Up to post-disaster 1-Up skeptics. Jade Kraus is tops anyone but *insert favorite 1-Up Yours podcaster here*.

Podcasts I've stopped listening to over the years:

1upShow/Listen up - just one of those dudes who found Garnett unbearable.

Gamers with jobs - Became boring and uninformed

GAGcast - Became a bit too uninformed and not a fan of Wombat 90 percent of the time he's on. Still love CheapyD and his stories

Podcasts I still tune into:

RebelFM - though indeed, Anthony and Arthur's back & forth is pretty damn annoying not to mention uncomfortable

IdleThumbs - Tend to only tune into the first half and bail on letter segments

Retronauts - Probably my favorite podcast. Dunno, I've just never found any issues with it ....wait, I didn't care for the Penny-Arcade reading episode.

Geekbox - Still check 'em out when I remeber too. Just appreciate them "geeking out" so to speak.

Bombcast - Another good and consistantly funny podcast.

Out of the game - Good stuff here and has some of my favorite personalities. Though Luke could be a bit more opinionated at times. He sorta just listens in alot

Pretty much all of IGN's stuff. I used to listen to it all, but dropped off gradually. That said, IGN started to grate very quickly with their yelling of 'SCOOP!!' over and over.

Player One Podcast goes up and down with me. I think Chris is okay and Phil is great, but I could live without both of the Gregs.

I remember enjoying the go nintendo podcast a looong time ago. I somehow found it terrible but charming.

Current faves:
- Listen Up (despite its flaws vs 1up Yours),
- Retronauts (always fantastic!),
- Idle Thumbs (I'm not really a PC game player, but I enjoy their discussions. It's obvious they know their shit, and are interested in more than just the usual fare)

LAN Party was just about the worst show ever committed to audio. There was one show in particular that had to be the most hated thing in the history of GAF.

I stayed with Listen Up but it definitely had ups and downs. I liked it more weeks than I didn't though so I thought of it as a win.
Is there a link to this thread?

Honest to god truth: Ive never listened to a podcast of any kind. As far as gaming casts go, are they any interesting to listen to? Do they have good information, or is it just someone's thoughts about a known game/subject?

I'm kinda shocked at the Hotspot hate, probably because I started listening after the Giant Bomb guys left. It's currently one of my favourite podcasts, some of those guys are really funny.

i actually think idle thumbs and gamers with jobs sound the same, the people just seem really boring and i cant tell the difference between them

the difference being that the people on GWJ seem much better informed. i 've listened to idle thumbs once and it was some of the most ignorant shit i've ever heard

man, you guys bringing up THE HOTSPOT and rich gallup makes me all nostalgic.

i see he's working at an mmo developer now. good for him. hope he's doing well. many good memories listening to those guys goof off and chat it up on that show.

Wow I had no idea that the podcast started as a 2-man thing. I'll have to check out some o those old episodes.

Also, does anyone else listen to the Rock Paper Shotgun Electronic Wireless Show? I like it a lot, but sometimes the audio quality is so poor that I can't listen to it.
