Podcast that you liked and now don't like?

i actually think idle thumbs and gamers with jobs sound the same, the people just seem really boring and i cant tell the difference between them

the difference being that the people on GWJ seem much better informed. i 've listened to idle thumbs once and it was some of the most ignorant shit i've ever heard

not only that.... they have

a) godawful singing bits

b) godawful intro (sung)

and you know what's the worst thing about Idle thumbs? I don't know these people and they're guffawing like idiots over things which really aren't funny. So here I am listening to a lot of really loud obnoxious laughter. And they can't seem to talk without sounding totally smug, and at which point, they laugh again at their own idiotic comments. And they laugh all the time. All of which is uninteresting and annoying.

I used to have issues with bombcasts incessant HOLLERING but they've tamed it down and like I stated, bombcast is one of my favourites now.

Player One Podcast - they need a little more excitement.

I love the "X podcast, cause they're just X console fanboys" responses. :lol :lol

Giant Bombcast that turned into a bunch of lazy morbidly obese guys sitting around discussing fast food.
Yesterday's episode Jeff and Ryan spend the first part of the podcast making fun of people that basically looked like(based off their descriptions) Ryan. I guess it was supposed to be funny, I just found it sad.

In the bizarro version of this thread, I post Idle Thumbs. I hated it when I first listened to it. A half a year later, I listen to it again in desperation, and it has been a hilarious and enlightening experience. I do understand people that don't like all the inside jokes, but I think the jokes are more obscure or references to earlier podcasts than anything. It's all public domain.

I guess 1up yours is the answer to the real thread title. I still listened to it, in the same way I still watched TGIF after Full House went off the air. Garnett is a weirdo and he says weird things. All the time. He seemed less so when I started listening quite a while ago.

Also, yeah, don't try to figure out what your podcast heros look like.

CAGCast used to be my main gaming podcast, but now I almost never listen to it. Can't stand whenever Cheapy complains. Hate that he actually responds to requests to put in more effort, make more shows, etc., by saying it would take a day to edit. You don't have any other job. We know this because you talk about it all the time and yet you make a shitload of money having other people do most of the work for you at this point. It's just obnoxious when he actually seems to want sympathy for having to work about 8 hours just one day out of the week. Jesus.

Joystiq replaced CAG in my listening rotation, and it's still a lot better than that's become, but really only because of Ludwig and sometimes Justin. Chris takes himself too fucking seriously. Anytime anyone has (most often rightly) criticized their brand of gaming journalism, Chris has gone mental and behaved like a big baby. They all do to an extent when they're put on the spot, but it's more disgusting coming from the blog's editor. Instead of responding intelligently he calls people names and questions their intelligence. At the same time they constantly say incorrect things, occasionally rag on GAF whenever it used to be brought up (because they don't care that a message board that takes itself too seriously doesn't like them and they'll prove how much they don't care by bringing it up and sounding sulky), and use the same played out and uninformed talking points about the Wii. Third party games don't sell there, don't you know! The more a person reads GAF, the less anyone on this podcast appears to have a clue about anything except hands on impressions.

Still, Ludwig is funny and doesn't seem to take himself that seriously.

The only podcast that's never disappointed me is Idle Thumbs. Always love it and actually get annoyed when it's only Tuesday and I don't have it to listen to on the train.

This is my exact experience.

I wasn't complaining about the lack of gaming talk or gaming news. I like it when a gaming podcast dives into a non-gaming story. I find it a nice break from the routine.

As for the Japan talk, the vast majority of his occasional Japan talk centers around how backwards tipping is in America and how great customer service is in Japan. If that makes you happy, more power to you. However, don't tease the notion he's doing large dissertations on Japan, he is not. It's not surprising he doesn't dive deeper into Japan culture since he cannot speak the language, which is starting to get a little sad since he has lived in the country for multiple years.

Oh, I know. But until an American in Japan does a weekly podcast contextualized around something I'm interested in - games in this case - CAGCast is pretty much the only game in town. He's going to be the guy who walks down to Akihabra and points out that Halo 3 isn't selling well or whatever.

Player One.
After however many episodes I feel like recording over Skype is still hurting this podcast. When it was just CJ and Phil the frequent silences were deafening. Then Greg came back and it got livelier, so I kept listening, even though it got more boring. Then Greg Ford joined and at first I thought: okay, it's four people now, this has some potential. But alas, he still sounds like he doesn't want to be there whenever he actually bothers to say something. Eventually, I would only listen when nothing else was available before dropping the feed entirely. (Phil's singing aural assaults might have had something to do with it as well. Cringe-worthy and embarrassing. Sorry.)

The HotSpot

I don't listen to it anymore....mainly because I don't respect any of them after Gerstmann-gate. And because the HotSpot is just boring. Rarely humorous. All of the talent as left GAmeSpot.

GameSpot is just lame in general these days. Reviews are late. Podcast is boring. And the forums are just horrible....far too many over-zealous mods there too.

Yeah Major's show can be pretty hard to listen to.
It just seems so fake. It's like info/instructions for people who don't know anything about videogames but packaged like a real conversation.

On the most recent one Laura was like "oh man I have this story" and then it turned out to be info on how to save your game in ODST. :lol
It sounded so forced.

Did you listen to the MN podcast with Felicia Day (sorta) recently? It had Laura interviewing Felicia and it sounded like Laura wanted to..um...go down on Felicia.:lol Seriously, it sounded like Laura has a HUGE crush on Felicia. Every response Laura has was either a giggle or something like "Yeah totally".

But I still like MN's podcast. Been listening to it for years.

Anyone ever listen to the destructoid podcast? It's pretty insufferable, and technically horrible. 5 guys on 10 different volume levels!

Another one is Major Nelson's podcast. I like Major Nelson a lot, but I can't stand "E." I tried to stomach it for a while, but gave up.

Oh god, I can't believe I actually listened to that for so long. Once "e" became the co-host, the discussion just turned into dilemmas that rich people go through concerning espresso.

Also, I sadly had to stop listening to The Geekbox once it became a lost podcast.

I used to listen to Major Nelson all the time, but then his length got to me as did his interviews that I didn't care about. RebelFM was ok for a little bit, but meh. I just listen to Giant Bombcast, Idle Thumbs, IGN GameScoop and Short Attention Guys.

At least no one here has mentioned that they're tired of Evil Avatar's Shotgun (so that either means no one's listening or you all love us). :D We've recently gone to a three man show, and I'll be the first to admit its not the best stuff around, but at least we have fun doing it, and we give out free stuff sometimes.

Ugh. I can't even stand looking at the logo. I don't know why I used to listen to it in the first place.

Also,
Mobcast: Oh the first episodes were fantastic. And then it became boring. I listen to it from time to time, whenever I have time.(heh).
RebelFM: When two of the main cast left, it just isn't the same. It isn't bad at all btw.
Squadcast: aka The Squadron of Shame. Loved the game music episode, after that they only play games I'm not even remotely interested in.

I don't remember the last episode they talked about it, actually. You never figured they would stop once it's on break?

Ugh, I can't stand that Gomer Pyle impersonator. I feel like I'm getting stupider by the minute whenever I hear him speak. He should probably just drop podcasting and take up some other hobby more attuned to his sensibilities, like running moonshine or something. He always has some lame excuse for putting the show up late, too. I think he's just naturally lazy, like all Southerners. It's a good thing Doug's around to repair the atrocities Kevin commits towards the English language.

I use to like Gamers with Jobs...but slowly it started to annoy me and I became increasingly uniterested in the podcast.

Their lack of knowledge in some cases on topics they decide to discuss was most annoying imho...

Exactly my thoughts. I can only listen to old nerds talking about Rock Band and Lego games for so long..... Awhile ago though they did have a 'segment' where one of the guys, I forget his name, vowed to play a game every month that he normally wouldn't play and then would talk about it. I thought that had real potential to force some interesting discussion, but it really didn't go anywhere.

I know Giant Bomb often goes into fast food discussion - but that's usually in the beginning and they finish it off quickly. More often than not they have a good majority of games discussion though, and when Jeff gets into the zone it's pretty impressive to listen to him talk. That man knows games. I guess my only gripe is their anti-pc slant, which Brad and Dave try to counter sometimes.

It's still one of the better games podcasts out there.

Everything IGN, they used to be some what funny, but now they are just annoyingly stupid.

Rebel FM is getting rather old as well.

Eh, I don't pay attention to tv schedules, perhaps I'll give the geekbox another run, but my listening time is pretty full at the moment.

CAGcast. Cheapy is always, always wrong, and Wombat is insecure and whiny. And neither of them actually fucking play games, it seems.

Cheapy does nothing but play games. You're talking utter bullshit.

Major Nelson's podcast is basically a 2-hour long Xbox commercial

Rebel FM has gotten hard for me to listen to, I like everyone on there, but Anthony seems like he is a bit jaded since EGM went under and it makes it not great.

Fav Podcasts are Bombcast, GWJ, Player One Podcast (probably my fav)

stopped listning 2-3 years ago, basically its for hero worship game journalists and spoiler for video game so there is no mystery or surprise when I play them.....

if ever made one that was only vicious catty industry gossip, would listen every week.....

More people should listen to the Brainy Gamer Podcast (a dubious name, I know). It usually comes out as 3/4 shows at once every few months, but it's definitely worth it (look at the back catalogue). The host is great at getting loads of interesting combinations of people together, and keeping really great, in depth discussions going. So good.

Idle Thumbs is still probably the best weekly podcast, but I think it was a LOT stronger, and more focused when the 2K Marin guy was a regular. Hopefully, he'll be on more next year as Bioshock 2 reaches completion. I get a bit more out of now that I learned to distinguish between Jake and Nick (it was hard! :lol ).

Rockpapershotgun I love (I've been reading most of these journalists for the best part of ten years! Kieron was the first writer I knew the name of). They alternate between two different combinations of peoples (Kieron and Alec are my favourite, but Jim and John is equally good). Just looking at itunes now and there's one with everyone actually together. :D

I got really tired of Player One Podcast after listening for a while. The fewer the hosts the harder is to make a consistently good show, and one of them can be rather snarky.

I started listening to Kotaku since Ken Levine was on (him + anything = awesome), and it's decent, It would be nice to see more podcasts with regular guest segments. Like the site itself, I really like Crecente and Totillo, who seem to be the main hosts, but I just can't stand McWhertor or Owen Good, and the people who call in are alternately hilarious and moronic. I probably won't bother with any more besides the big end of year/e3 ones.

Nintendo Voice Chat
Matt's ok as long as you take him with a pinch of salt, but I really can't stand Bozon. I guess it's not his fault, but he's basically the stereotypical games journalist with the same annoying opinions about games as a medium, reviews etc etc. Could only listen for a few weeks.

Rebel FM: I only listen to the Game Club but they annoyingly limit themselves to very mainstream, dull, multiplatform or just popular games from the last 5 years. The Half-Life stuff has been great (the first I listened to in a while). I was never a fan of the main show

Which brings me to the excellent Co-Op (ie: 1up Show 2), and the good Totally Rad Show.

I tried Squadron of Shame as I love the idea, and some of the games they picked were interesting, but one of the hosts is fucking inane, interrupting CONSTANTLY with his high pitched late teen voice, and arrogant, idiotic opinions. He makes David Ellis (to pick an easy target) or whomever the Gaf loves to hate, sound like the most polite, intelligent, thoughtful and well-informed gentleman on the planet. It's a shame as most of the other hosts were really good, and I love the idea but I couldn't keep listening.

So, is there any podcast like Game Club or SoS that's actually good?

The biggest offender that is now off of my list is the CAGcast. I used to enjoy it a lot until the children came along...now it has turned into "Listen to this nasty story about my kid" from Cheapy and Wombat just kind of...taking it. That's alright, but it's just too much for me and I tuned out for (almost) good when the vomit stroller story came about. I'd just had enough.

Luckily, I see nobody here hates the Noobtoob Modcast! Oh I kill me :lol

Major Nelson: rarely has any interviews that actually interest me and everything else in the show feels like PR for MS.

All IGN-podcasts: just couldn't stand them anymore. That constant screaming was so annoying.

years ago i used to listen to GAMING STEVE.

dark days, friends. dark days.

Oh the memories. Gaming Steve was one of the first (if not the first) podcasts i started listening to. That guy got me soooooooo hyped for Spore (still haven't forgiven him for making me run out and buy that piece of ****).

ListenUP was something I had every Friday...I kinda liked it, but eventually it just started to bore me.

Typical rotation:

Rebel FM
Bombcast
Retronauts (when available...my favorite podcast)
Player One Podcast (it's alright sometimes)

I'll occasionally throw in some IGN stuff too, if only for the hilarity that is Greg Miller. I used to be big into the Nintendo one when they would actually throw out random games taunts (dark game, ooooh :lol ).

Were you still listening when he tried The World Ends With You for a month? :lol

the hatred for it was hilarious

he even got me hyped for SPORE, and i scarcely care about those sort of games.

remember when he added the new "professional" intro music? good god

Glad my podcast isn't well known enough to be bitched about on here. :lol

It was pretty hard listening to 1up Yours after Luke left; the chemistry just wasn't there. I stuck it through until Listen Up which was just unbearable. CO-OP is a good replacement for the 1up Show, but their focus on iPhone games up until the last few episodes was annoying. Other than that, I'm always glad to see it on my TiVo.

Stopped listening to the Hotspot after the fallout. Tried RebelFM/Geekbox/OOTG, but didn't really care for any of the three.

Used to have a lot of podcasts I grabbed weekly when I drove 8-10 hours a day. GFW, Official Xbox Podcast, CAGcast, Eat My Bomb, Player One, Retronauts, EGM Live, OPM, etc.

You lie, and so does everyone else who dropped in here to say the same thing.
Nah, it was just an off the cuff comment about how sobering it is to see all of the complaints about the various podcasts. Doing one is a lot of work for very little return, so complaints are always hard to deal with, legitimate or not.

I usually just unsubscribe to something I no longer like and that's the end of it; no negative reviews or anything. There's some genuine dreck out there, but I still respect the effort it takes to make it in the first place.

1up Yours sucks without Luke, Shane, Mark and/or Shawn.

So I'll go with that.
I completely agree, though I would loved to have seen Shane and David Ellis on the podcast together more, because Ellis less is basically a less informed version of Luke, the discussion/arguements that could have come from them would be awesome. Not to mention someone would actually call out Ellis on the misinformed crap he sputters sometimes, which Shane did, at least once, just about every episode they were on together.

Anyone here the latest CAGcast? Right away they addressed the issue about shipwreck saying the US verison of demon soul's is harder than other versions. It looks like there listeners corrected them:lol . Anyways I just heard Cheapy D say he was stuck on the final boss of gears 2 which he's obviously wrong about. Since the final boss in gears 2 is probably the easiest boss ever made. He must be talking about that dual chainsaw dude I assume..can't remember his name but since no one else really plays games on that podcast no one corrected him. Mainly you just have to listen to that show for the stories and not for game info or discussion.

As far as podcasts I have dropped though Gamers with Jobs is one I used to really like a lot and then they got to 360 centric and every week would slam PS3 for no real reason. Also all the forced laughter at there lame jokes. They wait for someone to say something supposedly funny...then laugh...then someone else says something supposed funny...then laugh...and it just keeps going. It's painful to listen to.

Also dropped Geekbox but that was because they always talking about stupid TV shows.

Rebel FM.

I still listen to The Geekbox just because they cover many fun things and stay on topic for the most part.

But seriously. Rebel FM was so good. Anthony's stores of Civ 4 and such were the greatest. Now we hear poop jokes for the most part. It infuriates me so much that I almost want to start my own podcast out of spite.

Blast Processing said:
I'm with you on some of their dumb jokes, but this never happened.

It was a long time ago. Probably a year or so ago. "Gorgoues Rob Borgoues" or whatever his name was. The producer of the podcast would slam the PS3 every chance he got. It's definitly there, that might have changed now but it has been a long time since I've listened.

Guess the podcast!

"There are certain class/race combos that you still won't be able to pick. Like Undead Hunters."

wow-cataclysm-new-race-class-combos.jpg

I dropped Rebel FM because of Arthur. Grating know-it-alls are no good for intelligent discussion.

Had to stop listening to this weeks Geekbox for the same reason. Some dude named Patrick was on and he was like a real life incarnation of "Comic Book Bug" except he was a dbag about every topic they broached (except piracy). He also decided to completely take over the podcast. Annoying as hell.

I found this through the search. Apparently there wasn't a thread this week.
This guy is killing me. It was all fun and games until he went on this ridiculous tirade about Burnout never got a patch to restart events. :lol

IT IS IN THE DPAD MENU.
