The Pokemon Company, among many others, announced their 2014 results for brand licensing (retail sales) through License Global!. Not surprising, The Walt Disney Company placed first with $45.2 Billion in total retail sales of licensed products worldwide.

On the other hand, The Pokemon Company placed 34th with $2 Billion in total retail sales of licensed products worldwide (which includes the likes of TCG, video games, anime, VOD offerings, etc.)
Pokémon features a wide array of offerings from video games, the Pokémon trading card game, animation and wide variety of licensed lifestyle products, making it one of the most diverse and beloved entertainment franchises in the world. Highly anticipated Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire launched in November and, with only six weeks of sales, became the best-selling set of video games in 2014, adding to the more than 270 million Pokémon video games sold to-date.

With more than 21.5 billion Pokémon TCG cards shipped globally and nearly 800 episodes currently in its animation library, Pokémon is a long-standing market leader and enjoyed an incredibly strong year at retail in 2014.

Comparison with 2013?

And yeah, the Pokémon franchise is a beast. Such longetivity is quite remarkable.

Thanks for posting this :)

Obviously Pokemon's reign is over. Yokai Watch is taking over now.

Jokes aside, good on them. They'll have to use HM03 to get through all that money.

Sadly I feel like this discourages them to take risks when making their games. I'd like to see some left turns in Pokemon just to change it up. Oh well I still love it...

Now they just need to bring more merch etc. out of Japan/US

Though I must correct that article. There's over 800 episodes...including specials, we're beyond 900 now.

This is more the merchandising than the Pokémon games itself.

True, I think my favorite time in Pokemon was during late Gen III-Gen IV where we got Colosseum and XD, Mysterious Dungeon, Ranger, Trozei, etc., and Gen IV was prob my favorite set of games.

Then Gen V seemed like it bumped back Pokemon again, and then we got yearly games but most the fun spin-offs sort of disappeared and we got "cheap" ones like Rumble.

Obviously the real reason Disney bought star wars was for the Death Star plans. I imagine construction is already underway.

Other than the Smash ones, we don't yet have Pokémon Amiibo.

Just dwell on that for a moment.

A mainline Pokemon Wii U game?

Anyone listening?
I still don't understand what the benefit of having Pokemon on a console vs a handheld would be, excluding more graphics but who really cares about that.

Most RPGs and especially Pokemon benefit from being on handhelds IMO since you can play them while doing other stuff, like watching videos or commuting on a train/bus.

The Pokemon Company has to ok it.

I'm sure there will be some eventually. I'm guessing for the next games. The 3DS now supports NFC.

It will be a bloodbath though.

This fad has been going on almost as long as I've been alive.

Don't expect it to go away anytime soon.
Woosh.

Its amazing pokemon is still going strong, I have small cousins that love to play on their xbox 360, but begged for a 3DS just to play pokemon. It still sells portables.

2 billion comes off as a little low to me for some reason. Maybe it's because Notch just got 2.5 billion for Minecraft, but I feel like they would have been past 2 billion by now, especially with all the arms the Pokemon franchise has.

Good for them. Love me some pokemon.

Thing is, outside of Japan the merchandise situation isn't the best. Stores don't stock lots of it and Europe is mostly shafted :/

I've noticed this recently. I would love to buy Pikemon merchandise but places like Walmart have the same old. Only place I have been that had a plethora of awesome stuff was Toys R Us in NYC and Epcot in Disney World.

Also is there any demographic info? I would love to see what age groups bought the latest games. I would think a good bit would be 20 ish year olds.

Man, Disney in 2015/2016 is going to make so much money from Star Wars merchs it's going to be pretty insane.

It's 2 billion in 2014, buying the Pokemon franchise would cost a lot more money than a measly 2,5 billion.

I'm guessing they could make a bit more money if a vast majority of the Pokemon merchs weren't unavailable in most of the world besides Japan, New York and Paris.

So it's not just my location then. Most retail stores around here that would hypothetically sell Pokemon merchandise other than the games have few to no other Pokemon items.

If Pokemon was to be sold, it'd be sold for far more than $2.5 billion.

This is $2 Billion in retail sales during 2014.

I was around 7-8 when the Pokemon craze really hit the UK, and I'm still a fan to this day, even as I grow older and my tastes change, Pokemon still scratches that certain itch.

Edit: according to a Famitsu article, Pokemon has grossed around $40 billion worldwide as of 2013.

Damn Disney!

Why the hell do they own ESPN again!?
Disney basically has a branch for every possible audience in existance.

Wouldn't surprise me if someone found out a porn studio has a vague connection to disney.

If only they didn't relegate so many countries, they would be much much bigger. The potential lost in Brazil alone is enourmous.

Pokémon was one of the biggest things here, with dedicated magazines, weekly events, soft drinks promotions, mainstream TV channels coverage, GBC tournaments, TGC tournaments, theaters debut etc... Now everything is absolutely gone. I don't even know how updated the anime is on Cartoon Network.

It doesn't feel right when it isn't JoeM86 to make this kind of thread.

Anyways, to think some people thought Digimon would surpass Pokémon back in the day.
