Pokemon X and Y, 7 months later

I enjoyed it.

This is going to sound silly though, but the story sucked.

Totally valid complaint. Story lacked coherence. Too much focus on the friendship with the rivals part, which fell flat for the most part. Other than that I would have liked more new Pokemon and a better post-game.

Every part with AZ felt like it came from a different game or series even.

Battle Maison is awesome, but no more awesome than battle subways or towers. It's also not a post game in the same sense as gen 5 had, with tons of new routes, cities, and legendaries.

It's still early on in Generation 6, but XY felt like 2 steps forward, 5 steps backward.

+3D graphics
+Huge variety of pokemon to use
+A few very standout music tracks
+
Looker
Sidequest
+Trainer customization

-Disappointingly easy, even with the exp share off
-Lack of postgame content
-Fairy type seems to hurt dark, bug and fighting types more than dragon types
-Sky Battles
-Inverse Battles shafted in favor of Sky Battles
-Story was pretty bad. Story was never Pokemon's strongsuit, but coming off of BW, I expected something of a similar magnitude.
-Soundtrack felt kind of mediocre overall
-Everything about Lumiose City
-Useless friends/Rivals
-Only 69 new pokemon
-Megas were more of a popularity contest than pokemon that actually needed them
-Shallow customization for males
-Technical issues/Framerate problems. (Horde battles are especially bad)

Honestly, the games felt really rushed. It felt like they could have been much more. Hopefully XY get the Platinum treatment.

I absolutely loved them. I didn't like Gens 4 or 5 at all, and I thought I might have just been growing out of Pokemon, but I ended up pouring 230-something hours into X, completing the Pokedex for the first time since Silver, doing like a million Wonder Trades; it was brilliant.

There's not much post-game content, to be sure, and the framerate was rough, but Game Freak did so much work to streamline the typical Pokemon eccentricities that, R/B/G/C nostalgia aside, X/Y is probably my favourite Gen yet. They finally used the second screen and wi-fi capabilities for what they always should have been, rather than another shitty Pokegear clone that I never touch. Trades and battles and even fairly fun minigames at the touch of a stylus instead of making me schlep over to a GTS in the world. Being able to EV train in Horde Battles is an absolute godsend, and the list of small, delightful conveniences like that is endless. Easy access to hidden abilities is a total gamechanger.

I think they were a good entry, but weaker than the Black and White series, and I feel the next entry will be much better since gamefreak will have a better grasp of the 3D view. Or atleast I hope.

I feel like you hit the nail on the head, except I would say an "acceptable entry." I played both White and White 2 and really enjoyed them, but I couldn't get in to X like I did with those two. I put a fair amount of time into X (about 20 hours or a bit more) before I decided I didn't want to go any further. Honestly, my main complaints would be that the story was boring and the game had terrible performance (especially in battles) and it did not even look very good anyway. As a first-party game, I don't feel like the polish was where it should have been, especially for a major title like Pokemon.

I will give Game Freak the benefit of the doubt, though. I'm hoping this was just them learning the new hardware/3D and being pressed for time. Hopefully the next game will be of higher quality.

I kind of feel left out with where Pokemon has gone. The base game doesn't really incentivize catching lots of different Pokemon or building a well rounded roster. The adventure fails to ever raise the stakes or present scenarios that are actually exciting, and the world and art are so plain that exploration feels like a waste of time. There are too many Pokemon around to really care about any of them or see particular ones stand out.

On the other end of things the minutia of delving into Pokemon on a deeper level just comes across as painfully tedious, and there isn't really a solid goal for even bothering to perfect a roster.

Oh, and the technical inadequacies of X and Y are inexcusable. Nintendo should feel ashamed for releasing a game that runs so poorly.

I know the multiplayer experience is really all that matters, but this Pokemon had by far the least enjoyable storyline yet. Everything felt so dull, the characters, unlikeable, the villains, uninspired... Ech. I love the actual battling system far more than any other Pokemon title so far, at least.

What's wrong with Lumiose City?
The layout. I found it impossible and headache-inducing to navigate. The camera spins wildly around you as you move and all the streets look the same. Toss in the fact that there's no in game map, and you've got a problem.

Octodad gives me headaches too because I can't deal with the camera spinning like that.

This is the best addition to have ever been added to Pokemon.

Random battle or trade requests, friending each other is possible and Wondertrade is so damn fun.

I also think IV/EV breeding is great. I have NEVER before attempted either in any Pokemon game but thanks to the super training I learned the basics very easily. Once I was able to visit the Friend Safari IV breeding took practically no time. Now I have over two boxes of competitive Pokemon I bred myself.

It's because they are all goody goods, it's getting annoying. I want an actual jerk rival again.

Smell ya later.

Loved it. Probably my favorite. Some hardcore fans might not like how they streamlined the breeding and training, but I loved it. The first game in the series where I have put more time into the post game than the story. Can't wait to play it again.

but why do you want to navigate? there is the taxi? are you poor and unstilish? that is nonsense... centrico plaza is a circle so you can put a paperclip under the stick to autobreed, you can hatch 5 eggs in 3 minutes and they fast evolve to perfection...¿maybe this is gen 6 for breeders?

I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't been burned out on Pokemon. I liked the stat and attack changes, and I actually died several times, but the game did not make enough changes to really absorb me. The music was pretty good, but not as good as the first 4 Gens, but the beautiful battle graphics partially made up for that.

For the future, I want a game that starts much faster, and makes more of it's content optional. It took me 40 hours to beat Y, but it has almost no extra post-game content.

Edit: Also, the nostalgia abuse was excellent in Snowbelle City.

I wish there had been more post game stuff to keep me interested. White was the last one I had played and I really enjoyed its post game stuff. A pretty huge area of the world left to explore and some story stuff left to do.

I also wish the games performance hadn't been so bad. I'd have loved a smooth framerate with the whole game in 3D, not just the battles and a few other areas.

This is a good point too. I'm a sucker so I buy them every year (series has been yearly since 2009 in the US now) and now I'm starting to want to force myself to skip a year so I don't feel so burnt out. I really wish the series didn't have a basically yearly release schedule. Hopefully there's a gap between OR/AS and Z.

First pokemon game I played that I couldn't even get to the halfway point. It was just so boring. I think I need a lot more plot to get through pokemon nowadays.

Making EV training a lot easier was a good addition. Was pretty easy though and no post game didn't help. But overall I enjoyed it.

The story was really awful (compared to B/W), it was way too easy, and there was basically no post-game content. An incredibly unremarkable experience.

Also, maybe this is just me, but wasn't the Pokemon League kind of... ridiculous? I get that it's supposed to be a big epic building but that shit was just stupid.

I think the problem with the story is that we'd just come off B/W, which actually attempted to tell a legitimate story. Maybe not the best thing ever JRPG-wise, but they certainly went against many of the tried and true tropes they'd been using for a decade or so before.

Doing a complete 180 on that in X/Y made the normal boring Pokemon story all the more noticeable.

Mechanically it's amazing, but there is a lot of bad to be said about the main quest (mainly bad rivals, bad plot, terrible villain team and screwed up pacing). Nevertheless I enjoyed them, probably because it was my return to the series after I got seriously burned out on it nearly 5 years prior.

Edit: Tbh I wasn't too hot on BW story too so that probably didn't help. I caught up to it recently and was surprised how after 4 generations they suddenly went full jRPG with ridiculous plot, ridiculous villains with most jRPG-sounding names around (I really didn't like N's characterization), fake final boss, and final boss theme with midi synths chanting final boss' name. I warmed up to it over the course of the game but the beginning was somewhat painful, way too many Plasma appearances.

The series has been pretty much yearly since 2003, save for a year or two.

It has almost perfected the actual game mechanics and nuances of Pokemon. The difficulty and postgame were certainly lacking, and I feel if they nail those aspects in ORAS, then they will probably be my favorite games in the series.

It was my first Pokemon in a decade and while I liked it, the game was piss easy. I mean c'mon not even the champion uses a full party of mon against you. :/

Pretty bad overall.
You can't really change the gameplay of Pokemon.
Without a good character and story then it just another game blending into the Pokemon world.

And boy, the control is simply awful to adjust for skating and stuff...well, probably it is due to the 3DS horrible circle grip.

big Pokemon fan here but I felt that it was a chore to complete the game. I got bored halfway through the game.

I was really disappointed with the number of new Pokemon. Seriously, 72....

It was frustrating to run around the grass and encountering a bunch of old Pokemon...

Best Pokemon game ever. Not the most memorable, but the best game. So many hassles dealt away with.

Now fix the framerate.

I wanted to like it after being excited for it but I never even finished the game, got up to Victory Road then quit. Too many variable issues I had but the biggest problem was how I just didn't care for the 2D to 3D transition for in-game battles. I just wish they kept sprites.

Yes she does. That doesn't excuse the fact that pretty much every other trainer only uses 3 at most aside from the E4 (who only use 4) and your rival.

Single player is near the bottom in comparison to other gens for me.

Multiplayer/meta is the best.

Pretty good but underwhelming at the same time

No one really play Pokemon for the story. I feel like the consensus is that everybody rushes through the story so they can get to the after game. Which is the best part of pokemon.

A resounding success. The best entries in the series since Heartgold and Soulsilver. The accessible breeding and training tools are enough in and of themselves.

This is the best addition to have ever been added to Pokemon.

Thank you. This right here is exactly why X/Y is my favorite game in the series. It's pretty much one jump away from having pseudo MMO mechanics ala large scale instanced zones. Imagine if instead of being just faces on your lower screen all those random people were actual people walking around the towns.'

The fact that I was able to actually have connections with people all over the world was incredible. I remember when I unlocked some neat profile sprite and I got compliments from people in Japan, France, Australia. Then those led to trainer battles and trades. SO awesome.

My only gripe with the game is the horrible framerates. It's the only game I've played with 3D off. But I forgive it considering just how much work went into every single Pokemon model. People complain that X/Y didn't add enough new Pokemon, but 3D models made every Pokemon feel new to me.

It's hands down my favorite Pokemon game since Ruby and Sapphire. There's so much about this game I enjoy.

This is the best addition to have ever been added to Pokemon.

This. So much this. I still play X every other day just to try out Wonder Trade.

Awesome game. A little talky but Pokemon does that from time to time for some reason. Gameplay wise great though.

Post game was mad disappointing and it was definitely easy. Agree with whoever said that before me.

I love the gameplay. The methods for training EV's and increasing friendship are more user friendly. Wonder trade can get a little addictive. First Pokemon game in 3D and it was done well. I suspect Game Freak will make better use of the 3D graphics next time. Still dragging my feet with post game content. At first, I wasn't very open minded to the fact of needing to upload my Pokemon from the previous generation into a cloud storage to get them into current gen games. I understand why that method was chosen though. Now I've just moved on.

I wasn't a victim of the Lumiose City glitch but I feel for those who were.

I really enjoyed it. I played the hell out of it the first 3-4 weeks after it came out. Then once I got my team set up and started playing online, which I was really looking forward to... I stopped when I realized you can't do 6v6 ranked online. I was SO disappointed after all the EV training, IV hatching, trading and whatnot to get the ones I really wanted the most. Maybe I should have expected or known about that beforehand since I think all the real tournaments and stuff do 3v3 even in prior games. But that's not how I want to play Pokemon. =( I want to use full teams and have legit ranked matches like that. I just figured they would at least have the option to play either way. I put the game down soon after that and haven't really touched it since.

I just recently played through it for the first time, the only thing to do after beating it seems like collecting all the pokemon, but at a staggering 718 pokemon it's just daunting.

Not to mention some pokemon are unattainable except through dubious means, it's a real cockblock to make a game about collecting things and then make some things impossible to collect.

It may not be the best gen or the best game but it's and will be very important for the changes it introduced, building the foundations for the entries coming in the next 10 years, probably.

I thought the story, characters and rivals were all a massive step back from Black & White. And something about the art style out of battle bugs me, but they were still solid entries in the series and I've put a lot of time into the multiplayer.

Horde EV training is too good and a lot of similar mechanic changes are great.
Being able to hit up GTS and other trading from anywhere is very convenient.

The single player game though could have been better.

Huh? Diantha uses six Pokemon.
She only uses 4 in
the battle chateau, the fossil evolutions are the missing ones (totally forgot she had those)

I really hate the french setting.
Besides, some things are annoying:
No real Pokémon cries, just these stupid 8bit sounds.
No Option to speed up the battle.

I would love to see that fixed in the new remakes, but i doubt it.
