Politico: Republicans plan massive cuts to programs for the poor

GOP: Those brown people are on welfare and food stamps. Let's cut them.*

*Doesn't realize most people on these programs aren't brown.
Republicans KNOW that this hurts more poor white, but they don't care, as long as they can give huge tax cuts the wealthy. The GOP only cares about rich, old, white, heterosexual, Christians and large corporations.

“I’ll tell you what’s at the bottom of it. If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.” - President Lyndon B. Johnson
In the Trump administration "colored people", "immigrants", "crooked Hillary" or "fake news!" are all interchangeable as someone his followers can "look down on".

I was luckily able to serve with a lot of left leaning to moderate folks in my unit, but yeah, in general the amount of people in the military that support the GOP is nuts.

Right now I get my healthcare through the VA and I'm using the G.I. Bill to pay for school... I will be beyond pissed if these fuckstains mess with veteran benefits (as will thousands of others and that will surely be a hornets nest the GOP doesn't want to fuck with).

I'm going to be in the same boat. I'm going to be using the GI Bill to pay for school and my housing starting in August.

I don't think they're going to be going after that, but the changes to BAH rates (taking BAH rates from the lower ranking member of dual military couples or dual military roommates) are definitely on the chopping block.

We should be taxing the riches of the rich far more. What the fuck is apple doing with that treasure trove they have?

Nothing. It just sits there because they don't want to repatriate it to the US and pay the taxes on it. So it just sits there. Forever.

You can't tax the rich without changing how taxation works because the rich are smart and know that assets aren't taxable, only income is. This is why people talk about a "wealth tax" which actually taxes the total assets of the rich. However the rich are the ones in power and like hell would they ever allow that to actually happen.

So long as Republicans are the anti-abortion party, they can do anything and the base will gladly accept it.

Abortion isn't even that important an issue compared to guns. If the Democrats ever grew a couple of brain cells, they could easily cut off one of the biggest Republican wedge issues at the knees by just ending their quixotic opposition to guns and accept that Americans have guns, like having guns, and will continue to have guns and like having guns.

No. Democrats should continue to hold the line on guns, because we can't stop fucking shooting each other all the time.

It is a real, actual problem.

Even that wouldn't change much. Not as long as the GOP keep pandering to the Bigots and are free to broadcast to and thus brainwash the easily influenced + low educated through Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, they will always keep their base intact.

Democrats could stop talking about guns completely that doesn't mean Fox News and the Republican party won't continue to say Democrats want to take their guns away.

Thus Democrats would be cutting nothing because you insinuate that Republican voters actually fact check their representatives/Fox News.

I was trying to tell people this pre-election when everyone was trying to claim Florida was safe because of the Latino vote. People underestimate one issue and religious voters.

Republicans are unAmerican because they propose cutting veteran's benefits.

*tries to find a way to rationalize this dumb ass action*

*finds none*

Do they realize elections are next year? Pushing for tax cuts and eliminating "entitlements" is a good way to begin another recession. Here's a fucking thought: tax the billionaires. Take away $400 billion of tax cuts from multi national corporations with $100 million revenue, millionaires, and billionaires.

Can't start a banana republic that way.

No that's not what causes a recession. It doesn't do anything to cause or prevent it but when a recession does occur it amplifies the pain and suffering because people can't rely on being employed to carry them through without the aid of government assistance.

I hope that if this does happen house seats are flipped in greater numbers than normal because if we fail to secure those seats I'm worried about suffering like this causing people to riot when things don't go their way during the mid terms.

The entire notion of nationalism is based on the belief that one people are unique, special, and should rightly govern their country. Their nation belongs to their people, and all other people are inferior. A theory of nationalism is only possible with a theory of race.

Sorry, but that's simply not true. You absolutely do not require any sort of racial ideology (which is of course nonsense in a scientific sense) for nationalism.

And despite Mussolini occasionally having racist notions (and crimes like ethnic cleansing were committed), fascist Italy wasn't officially racist.

To quote the entire introduction to the excerpt from the Wikipedia article you just used as source:
"Fascist Italy was not officially racist, unlike its World War II Axis partner of Nazi Germany. Its leader Benito Mussolini had contrasting views on the importance of race throughout his lifetime, at times speaking of alarm towards a possible extinction of White people, while at other times denying the theory of race. Consolidation of gained territory in the northeast of Italy led to state-sanctioned persecution and ethnic cleansing of Slovenes, while closer ties with Hitler caused Mussolini to collaborate in sending Italian Jews to die in the Holocaust."

Man, this is yet another reason why I think the whole "I'm socially liberal, but fiscally conservative" is a load of Bullshit. That's basically code for "I think The Gays are cool and women can have Abortions, BUT FUCK POOR PEOPLE." Just, no, no one who supports this crap is in any way social liberal and never has been.

Republicans: We hate minorities, the poor, the disabled, oh and we are going to take away everything you need to stay alive for the bottom line: Money.

Voters: They tell it like it is!

O man I know a libertarian who says that and lets just say he's been dead silent on almost every major issue. But he did decide stick up for Milo's free speech and thinks we can talk to those people (also to note he's white). Then he made some insane prediction that Republicans would start investing in science cuz economics would work due to renewables and Easy D would let high skilled immigrants in.

I am not surprised.

My only hope is that their infighting and general incompetence delays the cuts long enough for me to finish school and find a job.

That'd crazy. I don't think they realize how many people marry mil-to-mil or move in with mil roommates just to help save some of their BAH to pay other bills. I would say they're playing with fire, but I know a large chunk of the people that would be screwed over if the GOP took away some or all of the lowest BAH recipient's benefits would still vote for them.

And the G.I. Bill is pretty damn awesome man! I wish you the best with transitioning out and thanks for your service

The GOP seems to believe their own propaganda a bit too much, of course, their base is going to be harmed the most by this. It seems that most of America hasn't realized just how much economic power minorities have in this country and it's not just a group of very poor people sucking up services.

2017, and you still have to point this out to people.

I don't think it is as black and white as that. I consider myself a socially liberal and fiscally conservative. We can easily cut a shit ton from the military, privatized military, privitized prisons, the war on drugs and actually increase social programs and infrastructure spending.

It's that black and white for most people who say that shit and pretty common among "Moderate" Republicans and *especially* Libertarians.

It's blindingly obvious what these people think of as the purpose of government:

-Police and military to defend property owners

-Upholding markets/currency

-Welfare for finance/business failures (auto and financial industry bailouts)

That's literally it. They don't care where this eventually leads, that many of them will end up knocked out of their capitalist fiefdom when they have no opportunity to cultivate any kind of lucrative consumer base.

In short, they're fucking morons who mostly inherited their capital, have nothing to offer society, and happily sop up the income of those with almost nothing to prop up their openly idiotic systems when they inevitably fail.

In the John Locke/Thomas Hobbes sense of liberalism, this is all that government should do (although Locke would blanch at the thought of Corporate Welfare).

Once you add corporate welfare in, though, it switches from Libertarian/Lockeian democracy to mere kleptocracy.

The GOP knows damn well what would happen, they just don't care. John McCain was the people pushing for it.

A lot of military members were complaining about it.

Hasn't the GOP been doing this exact same thing for decades now?

They also keep getting reelected too.

True fiscal conservatives would be happy to see the rich get taxed far more and for far less egregious and unnecessary military spending than the Republicans proffer on a regular basis. There are a lot of opportunities to scrimp and save without going the FUCK POOR PEOPLE route of last resort.

That said, you might have a point where American values and its political system is concerned.

I feel bad that the US has a conservative party so monsterious as the GOP, they use fear and breed ignorance. Pick any other conservative government from around the world and you essentially have the democratic party. One of the biggest irony's is that the GOP will use the "socialists/commie" dog whistle every time. Not realising that communism came from countries were the poor lived in abject poverty and the rich were given free reign to exploit them. helping people and not been a dick is what prevents communisim.

I had to laugh at an article in WND saying that a repeal of a law requiring the fireing of Communist party members at work was a slide to communisim in California. I had to point out that they wouldn't like if they were fired for been Christian. And that in a free country you can't have one rule for one and a different rule for another. Needles to say logic hit a brick wall.

When are they actually going to need 60 votes in the Senate again? I don't get this

Probably won't see that again until the Dems retake the Senate unless progressive knock out a lot of the establishment in the primaries.

After seeing what's come to light from the DNC lawsuit so far I'm convinced that the Democrats in congress are just the other side of the the same corporate controlled coin as the Republicans.

It's pretty amazing how the narrative has been shaped around the "others" using these programs when it benefits white folks the most as they are a majority of this country.

True, though a surprising number of white people are aware of this. They just think charities are more effecient than the government can ever be because it's the government.

And when I say charities, I mean Christian charities. Churches benefit in that making people reliant on Christian charity work makes it much easier to convert people. So on the front end you have these conservative churches helping the poor and destitute with some canned goods, donated clothes, and soup kitchen. Meanwhile, they're working to destroy the social safety net.

Sorry, but that's simply not true. You absolutely do not require any sort of racial ideology (which is of course nonsense in a scientific sense) for nationalism.

To follow up on this, I believe a lot of liberal schools teach a sort of "Diversity Nationalism" that contends that America is better because of the diversity of races, sexualities, genders, and perspectives. It's commonly taught as the concept of America as the "melting pot" versus the "salad bowl"

Unfortunately, the salad bowl concept has proven to be more accurate, not only as it applies to race. It applies to gender, sexuality, income, and especially politics.

Yeah, I'm not dating any trash that supports this. This isn't just politics or a difference of opinions, people's lives and well-beings are on the line, and it just coincidentally happens to be the lives of the most vulnerable in our society.

Fuck you if you entertain this long-time classic play of the Republican party - meaning you can just blame Trump for this and absolve yourself because "hrrrr I didn't vote for the guy and don't like him either!" This isn't Trump, this has ALWAYS been the Repub party and this nonsense has been going on since most of us were born.

But keep caping for these monsters and preaching "both sides".

Thank you. I already see it happening even with liberals. The whole I can't stand trump supporters but gop is ok. Trump is a fucking symptom of the gop and he's only being more honest about what the GOP really wants. The GOP shouldn't be able to weasel away with just blaming it on trump if this backfires on them but I already see people setting it up so they can. The only thing that makes trump more horrific is that he is an arrogant idiot that may start a war for his arrogance. Other than that the GOP is no better.

I say this myself, and this isnt what I mean at all. But I am a vicious advocate of the truth whereas the people you are referencing are likely not educated enough to spot the contradiction / evil of their position. To me, being socially liberal and fiscally conservative very much means letting people live the way they wish so long as it does not harm others and also trying to balance revenues and expenses of government against each other within our means. Thats it. The goal of government should be to work for everyone to increase their standard of living where it can.

Exactly. The GOP is cancer. A dangerous, destructive cancer on society.

Living up to that username

From a historical perspective, I believe the key indicator of a dangerous budget situation is interest payments as a percentage of GDP. I hadn't checked that in a while, so I assumed budget hawks were making noise for a reason. It's at a pretty healthy 1.3%, but it will obviously grow as social programs for the baby boomers need to be payed for.
