Portal 2 PS3 Steam Features Revealed (Platform agnosticism)

Jintor said:
One day we'll look back on this day as we toil under our Steam-powered overlords and cry. Steam will be on every gaming platform, as ubiquitous as the air we breath. Updates will be downloaded directly into our brains. Steam sales will involve the sacrifice of our firstborn - but we'll get amazing bargins out of it.

Don't even get me started on hats.

i welcome our Valve overlords

(now port TF2 to PS3 with Steamworks)

Yes, do this. We need a big batch of noobs. The OSX guys have either gotten good or left.

But by buying the PC version from Steam you'll get a TF2 hat

I'm going to have to see the hat. Then we'll talk.

Wow, that is awesome! So if I get it for PS3, I get a PC version for my Steam for free. Dude :) Valve redeemed themselves from hating PS3's to loving them.

Hope they extend that love to the Move as well in the future.

My PC sucks too much, so I'll be getting it for PS3. That said, I hope they announce KB/M controls, and even Move support :x 3D would be awesome too, but that may be pushing it :P

I think that they needed to focus on finishing Portal 2 first. The Steam integration with PS3 is obviously a big deal as well. Since it does use Steamworks there's a possibility of updating the game later on to use Move control. Valve is well-known for supporting games long after release.

Steam on PS4, believe

If this happens (again with full cross platform support) then it will definitely get me to support Steam a lot more... and save me a chunk of change as I was planning on purchasing a new PC in the distant future (2012 perhaps) specifically for PC gaming. I pray this would happen so that I can keep my gaming experience on a single device.

if people try to buy and resell. Fucking Shame on you. This is such a nice thing that they are doing. Dont make them fucking regret it
They should somehow flag used copies as unplayable on steam. Only the first buyer can play them. I'd support that, because a venture as risky as this needs strong support.

I'm kind of hoping that when Sony has the prototype PSN ready for next gen, they hand it over to Valve and go "work your magic"

Steamworks as standard in PSN next gen would be amazing, and I'm sure Valve would love to have such a significant input into the console market.

Wow. Wasn't really thinking of getting Portal 2 but I just might to show my support to Valve for this great thinking.

That's what Steam Cloud does. When you save on PS3 and upload to Steam Cloud, it's tied to your Steam Account. You log into Steam at work, you start playing Portal 2, pick up exactly where you left off because of Steam Cloud.
That's not quite what Steam cloud does. It synchronizes saves, but it doesn't magically make saves platform agnostic. If saves are platform agnostic, it will be because Portal 2 was specifically designed to support that. There are some Steam Cloud games that are not platform-independent, like Torchlight.

Except that I can't sell my steam games, which I assume is a backpack with steam. Once you register the game on steam it will forever yours, no workaround. I think this will persist in ps3 as well. You cannot make new account after that.

Awesome, its nice to see some cross platform play, and that PC copy deal is a nice sneaky way of saying "hey, why don't you try it on your pc OH HEY LOOK AT OUR STOREFRONT GAMES GAMES GAMES."

Hopefully the cheapos get their steam accounts banned or the game yoinked from their profile whenever somebody else puts in the copy of the game that they pawned off thinking they were so clever.

I've been saying Nintendo should do this forever. Just call Gabe and tell him to do it and you'll give him a royalty of $1/console.

Buy ps3 version. Get free steam PC version. Two platforms. cross platform, so many people to play with

The PC version isn't enabling you to play with anyone you couldn't play with on the PS3 version alone, though. Or the PC version by itself.

Fantastic news!! Day 1 for me.

It would be awesome if the people trying to exploit this got this:

1. Buy Portal 2 on PS3
2. Cross link accounts with steam
3. Get PC version for free
4. Sell / return the PS3 version
5. Plays on PC while feeling awesome like the douche bag you are
6. The guy who bought your old PS3 version starts playing his copy
7. Your PC version gets automatically locked
8. Crying on forums

I don't even like Valve games (other than CS), yet even I can agree that this is just nuts, they surely know how to get people to use Steam.

I imagine within the PS3 case there will be a one time use serial key that you would enter in when you link your Steam ID. A used copy of Portal 2 PS3 will be just that, and probably wouldn't give you the PC version for free.

Well, I don't think it ll work as well given that the the console will be locked system unlikely the PC.

But, it would still be great if the next system does get influenced/collaboration by both Valve and Google (PSN+Steam+Android)

Yup, would seem likely.

Which means after the first wave of returns from people trying to game the system, it will probably go on a 'we don't accept this game for trade' blacklist at retail too.

PS3 version of Portal 2 include cross platform play (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games
that is probably the most amazing piece of gaming news i've heard in... years. i predicted something like this would happen. there were lots of naysayers. what are they to say now?

Each PS3 copy will obviously have a code for the PC version or everyone would just rent the game on PS3 and get a free PC version.

It is awesome and something I am really excited to see. Reminds me of when you buy a Blu Ray, you get a DVD copy and a Digital copy as well. I really hope more games can integrate steamworks into PS3 and let us get a PC digital copy as well as all the goodies Steamworks offers.

this is just the start

Cool, it is really cool. However...

If the price difference is like it has been for other games where I live then we are talking about a ~30 euro more expensive PS3 version then PC version. (70 euro console versus 40 euro PC version.)

Will still get the PC version then. But really nice idea.

Still buying for PC, but trust Valve to show everyone how its done.

Best developer in the industry.

wait wait wait. Does this mean I can play multiplayer in my own house on my PC and ps3 with only one copy of the game?

Like can I play on my pc, and my brother play on the ps3 in the same room? That would kick ass.
