Portal 2 PS3 Steam Features Revealed (Platform agnosticism)

Redeemed? What did they ever do wrong in the first place?
Allow PS3 Orange Box to be dev'ed by EA. I don't really blame them though. Had they done it themselves it would have set back the release date a considerable amount. But yea, I am impressed by this news. I wonder, could you gift your PC copy to someone if you get it for PS3?

Incredible! I just recently re-bought Battlefield BC2 on PC. I first owned it on 360 but built a new PC that could run the game so went ahead and bought it on the superior platform. I've gotta admit, it didn't feel good having to double dip on the game.

Hopefully Valve is setting some precedent here as this is incredible. Why should I have to pay for a game multiple times to play it with friends on different platforms? I can understand the 360/PS3 versions not translating because of the licensing fees to Sony/Microsoft, but the PC version should come with every version of the game. Or at least give me the option to pay an extra $10 for a PC key.

If the Steam profile and the PSN profile are linked, I assume it would not be possible to play the game simultaneously on both platforms. So I won't be able to play co-op with my brother with only one purchase.

If this is correct, what's the point exactly in having the game on two platforms? I'm only going to play it on PC anyway.

Incredible.

I wanted to give this a try on PS3, just to see how Valve's first effort on it would be. But I was wary given how powerful my PC was in comparison.

No issues now. :D

I can't wait to link my Steam and PSN account. Hopefully it means more to come. Would be awesome if Steamplay will now be standardized as [PC+Mac+PS3].
Own one copy, play it anywhere.

Valve are kinda nice like that. "Hey, you already paid for the game. Here, have it for all your platforms, even if you wont use it".

Holy shit! I was not going to buy portal 2 at all, but only for this it's day 1 for me. Valve has impressed me, again... I have the Orange Box, L4D and L4D2 on xbox, but this is a no brainer, now bring on L4D2 with free DLC as in PC and I'll buy it again!

somedays i want to play on my PC, sometimes i want to play on the big HDTV, and then sometimes on my laptop, this is great

Well I thought about getting the PS3 version, but then I remembered the release on Steam is probably a few days ahead. Hm.

Awesome! I can finally play a game with my dad since he is utterly hopeless with a gamepad but is decent enough with a mouse and keyboard for FPSs.

This news rocks. Buy one copy; play with a friend on two separate screens. I'm totally hyped now.

I don't think it works like that, you will probably only be able to play on one platform at a time. They're not really giving you a free copy, think of it as one copy of the game that can be played on multiple platforms.

If PS4 is a 'SteamBox', I will buy eight of them.

Looking at what Sony is doing on the video delivery service front (not to mention Facebook/Twitter), I wouldn't be surprised if PSN 2.0 will coexist with similar services.

It would be awesome if the people trying to exploit this got this:

1. Buy Portal 2 on PS3
2. Cross link accounts with steam
3. Get PC version for free
4. Sell / return the PS3 version
5. Plays on PC while feeling awesome like the douche bag you are
6. The guy who bought your old PS3 version starts playing his copy
7. Your PC version gets automatically locked
8. Crying on forums

This would be awesome to witness lol

Wow it's brilliant.

I love the idea of owning a game means you can play it anywhere and on anything.

Cloud saves are the icing on the cake too along with probably many free and quick updates knowing Valve.

Puts the other guys to shame.

I guess unobstructed updates are such a given that they don't need mentioning? :)

The idea of a single SKU giving you access on both machines had crossed my mind, but I daren't have hoped for that.

I guess with cloud saving I could play on my PS3, then take my save with me when I'm on my laptop and seamlessly continue with that on the road (?) Very nice. I think I would probably still play on laptop anyway (kb/mouse), but the option to play on either system will make the PS3 version a no-brainer.

i hope future multiplatform games console/PC follow this trend. Sony should stick to this too, it could make the real difference in the future.

It might be less up to Sony and more up to pubs putting stuff out on Steam, using Steamworks or whatever. I hope what Valve is doing here is laying a groundwork that is re-usable by other devs who put out steam-steamworks/PS3 multiplat games.

A unified online network of Steam and PSN on the PS4 would truly be amazing. Its good for Sony, its good for gamers, and its good for Valve.

My platform of choice is and always will be PC, but shit like this is exactly the kind of stuff that moves console gaming forward for the better.

Valve deserve massive respect for doing this, but Sony deserve a huge pat on the back for allowing it to go through and giving Valve the support they need.

I'd buy this, if only to support the business model. As it stands now there will also be an awesome game involved. For two platforms.

Oh yes, this will be bought on day one.

This is what a developer acts like who truly cares about gamers and not just for their bottom line.
I am in awe. This is how you create the kind of goodwill that will make people buy all your games forever.

Gabe explained the thinking behind this during his keynote at DICE 2009.

The secret to entertainment as a service is understanding what it is customers are looking for. They want to be able to play content anywhere, they want to continue their games without worrying about saves, and they don't want to be bound by geographical location, and they want you to administer your own software

Though at the time I don't think anybody thought it would happen on PS3 as well.

But... but... I wanted to double dip! ;) Never thought this was a possibility. kudos Valve!

You could always double dip with the Xbox 360 version?

My mission this year is to acquire/build a capable PC for gaming and other media usages. It'd be cool to play Portal 2 on my PS3, then switch over to PC once I escape mediocre laptop purgatory.

Indeed. Both companies deserve accolades.

Does this mean with the recent hack that anyone who pirates Portal 2 will also get a legitimate Steam version? What about renting services? How can this work?

Wouldn't it just be based on a code that would come with the PS3 version? Redeem it and then you'd get the PC and Mac versions. So the only way you could get the additional versions would be by purchasing the game.

They can include a link code or something inside the manual ...

In addition, those who purchase Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 may unlock a Steam Play (PC & Mac) copy of Portal 2 at no additional cost by linking their PSN and Steam accounts.
:D

Yeah, makes a lot of sense. Greater encourage meant not to buy used to.

I wonder if they'll also sell Portal 2 though PSN. It's being published by EA but they're doing a PSN release of ME2 so who knows.
