Pressing Ctrl+C when you wanted to press Ctrl+V

Ugh, I tend to do this every now and then, it sucks. Even though it's kinda rare, it can be dedtrimental. So I downoaded this program;

ClipMenu for Mac, not sure if it's on Windows but i'm sure there's something out there.

It basically keeps a history of your clipboard which is accessible again at any time. It uses a bit of memory if you make it remember 20+ stuff, but I kept it at 10.

What I love in the middle-click-paste is that you can have two different things on the clipboard at the same time, one for ctrl+v and one for the middle button. I use it all the time, paste text with mouse and use ctrl+v for the image etc.
That would be beautiful if the poorly ported Maya actually supported ctrl_v on Linux. Hopefully with the new 2010 rewrite of the UI it will finally support it. But thanks for the tip, very cool for browsing at least.

If you just hit forward before doing anything else doesn't it just go back forward to the reply page with your text in tact?

It does for me, just tried it with this post.

Yeah, GAF keeps the text, but some sites dont... it's really annoying going back when you dont want to though, so I just cancelled the shortcut altogether.

For web browsing, if you hold the alt and press left or right arrow key, you can go forwards/backwards.

Alt D (or Apple L for mac users and sometimes alt L for linux users) takes you directly to the address bar.

You can also switch to tabs according to the number of your keyboard (i.e. Ctrl 1 goes to tab 1, Ctrl 5 goes to tab 5).

Ctrl Tab in web browsing or IM chatting makes it simple to switch tabs in a row.

CTRL+L does the same thing for pretty much every browser but IE. :/ Easier to remember CTRL+L if you have to use a mac a lot.

F6 is yet another way to highlight the address bar. There's almost too many ways to highlight the address bar...

alt d is so much easier to press with one hand.

The Anti-shortcut

This cancels the backspace 'go back one page' keyboard short-cut. Which can be quite annoying here on GAF if you accidentally click outside the text are when writing a reply and hit backspace.

Thhaaaannnkkk yooouu! Facebook chat sucks because of this

I suppose you suck at certain computer games? I mean, man, certain world of warcraft chracters could have like 30 you need to memorize.
I mostly play point and clicks on PC :lol
Actually I knew the f shorcuts for quicksave and quick load etc...

F6 is even easier! :D But I switched to Ctrl+L just so it's easier to remember shortcuts across multiple OSes. To each his own.
With Alt D, you can just start typing away as it's easy to go to home position. I have to reach all the way to F6.

I use an ergonomic keyboard. Playing games is a bit difficult although I've gotten used to it. Doing daily tasks on it and programming is just so easy on the hands.

Haha! That's what makes us different. :D

More like typing out a long message on PSN and accidentally holding down shift while backspacing, deleting your entire message. Gotta love that.

This is the worst. Whose decision was it to be shift+delete instead of ctrl+delete? :|

Most key combinations I don't use unless one of my programs has become unresponsive. In that case, I try to Alt+F4 it, of that doesn't work, I'll try to shift+tab away and ctrl+alt+delete me a task manager to force quit the application.

Shift+Delete is really useful for deleting files, though.

There's so many of them :/
To be fair, most hotkeys aren't that widely used. I mean, many people use or know about ctrl+x, c, and v for cut, copy, and paste, I don't think most use ctrl+f to search text or ctrl+g to repeat a search. I'm an oddball, so I check for banned people in every thread I enter with ctrl+g, so I use them a lot.

Also, key combinations can be useful when a right-click menu is unavailable.

did you know you can center click a link and it'll open a new tab? [granted your mouse is setup correctly]

How do you set up your mouse to do this? My razer lachesis cant seem to do this.

in firefox:

about:config
middlemouse.contentLoadURL TRUE
middlemouse.openNewWindow TRUE

both of these should be on by default but dunno. should work

edit: forgot browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick TRUE

Better than pressing Ctrl+V and then Enter in an IM chat not realising that you did not paste in a new link of an article you wanted to share, but the URL of unique porn site*

*also applicable to posting a screenshot of your desktop on GAF and not realising one of your tabs/windows is of a similar website

Thanks for that but do you know how to do it in chrome? I think the problem could be that currently my middle button is set to universal scrolling which is default on the lachesis but there is no option to make it middle click. I can macro the button but middle click is not an option.

Haha yes, that's the most common use now. But you can also use that as an alternative for cutting text.

Haven't seen this posted yet, ctrl+k to bring you to the search bar and ctrl+up arrow and down arrow to change search engines in Firefox

better than CTRL+V thinking that you CTRL+C a link and then you see what you CTRL+V right after you hit ENTER and your friend gets a GAY PORN link instead.

If you found that crazy, try using CTRL+T on your web browser and prepare to get mind blown
HOLY SHIT

mind blown gotta ly dow

Now close the tab with CTRL+W .... AND REOPEN IT WITH CTRL+SHIFT+T

MEGAAATOON
goddamn this thread just keeps getting better

far more annoying (which happened right now) is the fact that files are kept in the clipboard until you copy something else or restart, so days later you accidentally right click > "undo move"

...what did you undo?

I was going to get 'Ctrl+Z' tattooed next to my shit tattoo I got when I was 16. I decided against it (as I should have done 8 years ago :lol )

The shortcut I use most is WinKey+D, to access my object dock. I use Alt+Tab rather than the flashy one too.

ctrl+shift+T genuinely just blew my mind :lol

didn't know about that one. Windows Key + Tab is fun times as well, I've always liked that one just for snazziness (but I miss having expose back when I had a mac)

Oh man... One time I had some kind of crazy porn link copied from a few hours before and I was talking to this chick through Facebook's instant message system. There was this article or something I was going to link her to, so I highlighted the address and hit what I thought was ctrl+C, but nope, must have been ctrl+d or something. When I hit crtl+v then Enter, she got quite the surprise.

I thought everyone knew about the middle key.

But when you have a laptop: Instaclick >>>>>> all

I even use instaclick on my desktop now.
