Prince of Persia - preview & screenshots

People really should have given Two Thrones a chance.

It was a good successor to Sands of Time.
Imo, it wasnt as good as the first, but it wasnt too far off either. Two Thrones also completely crushed WW in gameplay and consistency.

Wow this looks amazing. I agree that it would like better without the thick black outline, but it still looks great.

Is it using the Assassin's Creed engine?

Open world makes me very nervous now. I have hope though. Looks so good.

Not really open world though. Its more like a web of hubs (Odin Sphere? maybe) with pathways connecting them. You just get to decide where to go when. Then add in the Metroid-esque ability system to limit them while offering a sense of advancement and I think it sounds great.

I did. Didn't get very far and just didn't have the magic that SoT had.

I haven't really been following the media on this, but after seeing these screens my interest went from about zero to wow. Hey, I liked AC, so if this takes that engine to another level then I definitely will be keeping an eye on it. I hope they show it in motion at E3. That'll be the clincher.

looks great

when I was banned someone said that a Zelda with those graphics would be neat. I want to thank him for having the best idea ever. once I figured in my mind what Link and the overworld would look with such treatment I came a little

Holy shit. The artwork is amazing on this game.

Yes it uses AC's engine.

Yeah, this is awesome. After AC I no longer cared for PoP, as I barely enjoyed the series as it was. But I love the new direction they are taking with it. Looking great so far.

Outline in the characters works for me. Makes it look like a gorgeous graphic novel

Wait until you guys see this game in action! We world premiere the epic gameplay trailer on Monday night on Spike at 9 PM.

That's gorgeous!!! I, too, agreed that they need to get rid of the black outline on the character.

You might as well get the fans around the world to send an email (flooding) stating and kindly remove the black outline form from the game. I hope they'll listen.

I hope it doesn't have AC style climbing mechanics. I liked the Prince of Persia stuff better.

If they do go that route, I hope they refine it a great deal.

glad this franchise got a re-boot...again...Sands of Time was great, then Warrior Within, ehh, not so great.

Can't wait to see more on this one.

That and this screen shot... I found amazing:

So much detail for cell shading...

Yeah, it's like the combination of the cell-shading with the detail on floors works great together, when you think it wouldn't.

Well, now that MGS4 has come and gone, I was concerned that I would not be excited for any other game again, but THIS, this is it. Now I have another game purchase to look forward to.

Two Thrones was a great game, didn't quite have the magic of SoT but it was still really good. This looks fantastic though, even if its actual link to Prince of Persia is tenuous at best.

Man, Cell Shading makes everything look better. Get on this shit tri-Ace!

I wonder how the amazing animation in AC will translate to this? Its not like the model we're looking at is fully 3D? Need to see it in motion.

Wow, you just got me to tune in on Monday. Is there a special programming schedule for your show next week for E3?

I really enjoyed the last three PoP games, though not all to equal degrees. I'm excited by everything I've seen and read about the new gen game, but I'm concerned about the magic safety net. One of the incredible things about platforming in PoP was that sensation of twisting in my gut when the game drew me into a profound state of empathy with the Prince - when I'd almost miss a jump and was suddenly struck by how high I'd climbed and how far I'd fall. It didn't happen all the time - it didn't even happen often - and I suspect individual experiences vary wildly; but I've never had that sensation with platforming in any other game. I can't pin down exactly what this X factor is, but I can't imagine feeling it without the threat of a long fall and the idea of death; even in its near-meaningless, metaphorical videogame form.

I applaud the developers for trying to get around the death/continue/rebirth cliché, and I hope I'm proven wrong, but I can't help but think that I'm going to feel less adrenaline when navigating a series of death defying leaps if I know I'm not actually defying death. Even the sand powers of the previous games took a bit of skill to use. It was possible to screw up a rewind horribly; thus wasting one of a limited number of slots. The gameplay wasn't staggered by death at every mistimed jump, yet the sand system didn't completely remove the sense of mortal risk. Based on the info in that preview, my gut reaction is that the new system will feel a lot like cheating as opposed to logically streamlining the gameplay; even if the end result (the setback) is essentially the same.

Good to hear GTTV is getting a better time slot. If only that time slot were extended beyond E3 week. Best of Luck.

I hope this is correct. When I heard "Open World" associated with this game, all I could think of was Assassin's Creed. Everything that's wrong with that game is a direct result of its open world nature. Hopefully this one remains a focused progression with strong level design.

It will be 30 seconds long, going by tonight's showing.

I loved all three of the last-gen Prince of Persias, so my hype for this is off the charts. Wish it was coming out earlier.

You know I never played any of the last gen PoP games. Do they still warrant a pickup?

But back on topic- I just love the risk Ubi took by going with this unorthodox art style. It's really shaping up beautifully.

I've only played Sands on PC, but it worked great (Keyboard & Mouse). Played the rest on GC. PC version's nice though.

Out of the three, which do you think is the best? I'll probably end up getting only one.

Wow. Looks great.

I really hope they don't screw this up with all the repetitive, generic, crappy "open-world" pitfalls that lie in their path.

If you utterly fail a jump and are about to fall to certain death, Elika will project an astral hand that will catch the Prince and place him on safe ground (aka, the last checkpoint). In combat, she will also intercede to spare the life of the Prince. Basically, this is like having the unlimited rewind functionality of the Sands of Time. Ubisoft defends the lifeline, saying that it's really no different than dying and re-spawning at a checkpoint. The only difference is that instead of a "you died" screen, you get an admonition from Elika and a reset to a checkpoint. According to Ubisoft, it helps the gameflow.

Yes, I really like this approach to "death". I loved SoT's "No, no, that's not how the story went", and hated the Game Over screens of the next game. It's basically a checkpoint system, but better integrated with the gameplay and the sory.
