I saw Steve Hackett in concert last week. Definitely one of the best shows I've seen. He played for nearly three hours; one set of solo stuff and one set of Genesis stuff. All great.

I'm jealous! I just found out he's coming to town next Saturday (28th), I won't be able to go though because of a friend's wedding that evening.

Interesting - according to the event listing Roine Stolt (of Flower Kings) is a part of the touring band for this.

Any of you know Third Ear Band? I don't know a whole lot of Prog rock, so I don't know if they're a big name in the genre, but they did the score for Polanski's Macbeth and it's pretty damn awesome.

Roine was there. He played mostly bass, but some guitar here and there as well.

A new band (though the members are all old monsters of the genre) I really love is Flying Colors, they write incredible songs.

All time favorites are Dream Theater, Pink Floyd and Transatlantic.
Also love Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Riverside and a lot of Neal Morse's solo work.

Lots of DT talk on the previous page so I'll chime in.
I think the last 2 albums are their best since 6DOIT with the self titled being one of the best of their career. When I hear a fan say he doesn't like it it frankly blows my mind.
To me the album feels like they really found their identity again, it's everything I wanted it to be, though like all great albums it had to grow on me.

Searched the thread for Quadrophenia - No results. You guys need to check it out, if you haven't already.

I'm otherwise not that big a fan of Porcupine Tree but I think Trains is really, really fucking good. Feel free to point me to anything else that sounds similar. Acoustic guitar + mandolin is a godly combination.

I love Rush, I have almost every album. I want to get into Yes, where should I start album-wise?

First things I heard (and immediately fell in love with) were close to the edge and the yes album.

Be warned that, to me at least, Yes can go from absolutely amazing to unbearable.

And that's over the course of a single song.

Not specifically that guitar+mandolin combo, but they do have a live album where they play acoustic renditions of some of their songs, called We Lost The Skyline. You should check it out.

The King Crimson show was absolutely incredible!!

Interesting note: They have a very strict no cell phone, camera, etc. policy. During their show on Thursday, someone took a photo between their last 2 songs of their encore which prompted Fripp to leave the stage and the show was over. As soon as you get into he venue and you were at your seat your phone must be put away. I was seated about 30 minutes before the show and they were hounding people if they had their phones out even then.

It was actually nice to not constantly pull my phone out and try and get the perfect picture, or check my messages, the time, etc.

At their Halloween concert Tool played the four minute intro of a new song called "Descending":

Video

Sounds pretty damn cool. Definitely promising for the album.

Here's a new interview Adam Jones did with Rolling Stone where he talks about the new song:

Article

Speaking of, you played a new song called "Descending" in Tempe.

Yeah, it's a working title. We have a song that's probably about 13 or 14 minutes long, so what we've done with it is ... I don't want to call it a "best of," but it's a shortened, different approach to it. It is a new song. It's like a vague movie trailer to the real movie [laughs]. Sometimes we do jamming between songs or some kind of segues, and it's usually involved in some kind of new material. But that one's just a little taste of things to come.

It's hypnotic.

Oh, cool. Yeah, the song's amazing. It's one of those things, too, where we're playing this "movie trailer" version of it and we just want to go into the main part of it. The main part's the best part, I think, but we just don't want to give that away yet. We're just doing a little taste test all the way through and put it together. I'm glad the response has been really good. But again, we don't want to go too far with it because we'd rather just hear the end piece, and we don't want people to hear the end piece until it's done and everyone's happy with it.

CD1
01. The Ride To Valhalla (19:35)
02. Juggle The Juice (3:48)
03. Digestive Raga (30:02)
04. The MAN From Wales (13:23)
05. Bon Voyage (6:11)

CD2
06. Raga For Jerry G (20:10)
07. 20 Steps Towards The Invisible Door (45:13)

After recently getting in to Psychedelic Space Rock and discovering the great jam band that is Øresund Space Collective, I was happy to find out that they had a new album out last month. It might be because of being a newcomer to the genre, but I just find it so refreshing to listen to these loose jams. Ride of Valhalla and 20 Steps Towards The Invisible Door are my favourites, with 20 Steps almost feeling like its own album within an album.

Also, I still can't get over how good it is to have a Google Play Music Unlimited subscription. Most of my recent progressive discoveries have involved me searching around on ProgArchives and then just putting those results in to Google Music and if I like it I can just have that album.

Damn, you weren't kidding guys. That Caligula's Horse tune has a strong Opeth vibe.

I'm really digging it.

I listened to that Caligula's Horse track a few weeks ago and forgot what it reminded me of until today. Silverchair. The singer has a similar kind of lyrical flow to some of Daniel Johns' melodies, late 90s era.

I'm gonna plug Caligula's Horse here since they recently released a new album. Haven't had a chance to listen to it all yet, but I already know "Bloom" is the best song on the album.

Dragonfly is best track on the album! It's a really solid CD. These guys are from my city, and they were the support act for Tesseract.

I hadn't heard them before the concert, and honestly they put on a better performance than Tesseract did. Really great sound live.

I'll check it out. I do like psych space rock and listening to the same 35007 albums gets old eventually. I wonder what happened to them..

I love Progressive music (metal/rock/weird ass avant-garde shit). I've been listening to a lot of David Maxim Micic and Arcane Roots lately.

David Maxim Micic - Smile
Lots of people just dismiss a lot of David's work as Djent, but the dude has an ear for melody and creative song structures.

Arcane Roots - Slow Dance
Arcane Roots are kind of a mish mash of Progressive and Post-Hardcore, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Djent covers a fairly wide spectrum since it attracts people from both progressive metal and technical death metal. There's everything from stuff that's not very different from death metal, to stuff like Chimp Spanner which is more like jazz fusion-inspired metal.

It's been confirmed to be a double album for a while.
Looks like they´re putting a lot of thought into the concept.
I just hope it's as good as the last album.

I used to be a HUGE Dream Theater fan. I was one of the few people who got When Dream and Day Unite when it was just released because I was intrigued by reviews who compared the band to Rush and Yes. The second CD was my favorite CD ever for many, many years. I collected bootlegs, I saw their live shows, I got everything they released. But ever since Metropolis Pt2 it's been a slow decline. There were a few highlights (Octavarium, Count of Tuscany) but in general the albums have gotten worse with every new release. Now I simply can't enjoy any of their recent releases, in particular the ones with the new drummer. The band has become a parody of themselves. Musical wankery without a redeeming feature in sight. Add to this the horrible production and you get albums that I'm unable to finish. I'm actually unable to finish any recent DT tracks. It's just horrible, horrible stuff.

Hey, didn't know we had a prog rock thread. Neato.

The Final Cut is Pink Floyd's best album.

Meddle is Pink Floyd's best album.
Everyone has a different favorite Floyd album, I guess.

I love Rush, I have almost every album. I want to get into Yes, where should I start album-wise?

I started with Fragile. But my personal favorite is The Yes Album. I think they are both fantastic places to start, but I think TYA might be better to get a feel for what they can do.
Starship Trooper is one of my favorite songs ever

Obligatory favorite prog stuff posts.
Yes, Floyd, and King Crimson are my favorites, likely, although I really enjoy Rush but don't know if I'd really consider them progressive save for maybe 2112. In addition, I really, really love early Jethro Tull (before they went a little off the rails), but again, it's like meta-progressive rock. Never got into DT or Tool or more modern stuff. Dunno.. 70s excess is where it's at for me. Y'know, Rick Wakeman in a cape and shit.

Best prog album is for me The Yes Album, for me. Outside of that I really dig Thick as a Brick, In the Court of the Crimson King, and Fragile as my all-time favorites. I like Floyd a lot, too, but not for a single album.

Ego and Eco are easily my favorite EPs this year. Those of you who like Cloudkicker should definitely check out David Maxim Micic.

Do you like Peter Gabriel era Genesis? Sounds right up your alley.

New Magnum album out next february. Still going strong after all these years. A criminally under rated band if ever there was one (and no they are nothing to do with the tv show, the ice cream etc etc). If you've never heard them then check out the most recent one "Escape From The Shadow Garden".

Sorry, but there's no pointless wankery in the last album and in the album before it there's only really one track where you can say that (Outcry).
They were definitely going down-hill with the last few albums they did with Portnoy but the last 2 albums are fantastic, with several songs ranking among their best ever. Only track I consider bad is "Build Me Up, Break Me Down".
With the last album in particular, I don't really see what more a DT fan could ask for. Illumination Theory is incredible and the life performance with the choir and orchestra was breathtaking.
My advice is giving them a second chance and listening to them with an open mind.

My favourite so far would have to be Phaze your Fears

f0TE2k4l.jpg

01. Phaze your Fears (20:17)
02. Ear Meat (24:26)

The title track feels like a combination of Pink Floyd live jams (Echoes, Shine On) and maybe something like the Allman Brothers Band's live jams, with all the psychedelic stuff layered on top. Awesome stuff with some great build up moments that really pay off.

Sorry for double post, but Dream Theater just premiered a song from the new album.

The Gift of Music

Not bad at all, especially the ending.

Not bad.
The first song they revealed isn't bad either, listening to it again now and it's actually giving me some Falling into Infinity vibes.
They definitely seem to have moved away from that heavier sound that was prevalent during their last years with Portnoy.

Speaking of which, I haven't listened to a lot of metal lately but Metal Allegiance is a lot of fun. Love the sound of MP's drums and he delivered a kick-ass peformance.

I already mentioned Flying Colors but allow me to insist that you should check them out if you haven't already.

Thanks for linking the article. I've been listening to Descending on YouTube very often, it's right up my alley. I really hope they manage to release the album next year.

@previous Caligula's Horse talk ... my favorite track from their latest album is Rust. The whole album is great though!

Also, the singer has another project called Arcane and they also have an awesome album out. Unturning is my favorite track and Learned(20+ mins!).

I haven't listened to the new album enough to have a favorite track, but I'll be giving it another listen today.

I'll check out Arcane as well, I like their vocalists work.

I somehow completely missed the news that Steven Wilson is releasing some material to keep fans happy until his next album.

Steven Wilson - 4 ½ is out on the 22nd of January (tomorrow!).

Tracklist:

01. My Book of Regrets (9.23)

05. Vermillioncore (5.09)

Looks like it is left over material from his last 2 solo albums, along with a new recording of Don't Hate Me, in a duet with Ninet Tayeb, an Israeli singer.
