Pretty psyched I just got Steven Wilson tickets for April.

Nice!

(though they aren't "ROCK") I am going to see BTBAM on Feb. 1, so fucking stoked! A bit disappointed that Co&Ca won't be at the show because I've been getting into the lately. Russian Circles will still be there though!

Awesome. I'm thinking about hitting up the Chicago show. Actually, who am I kidding, my wife wouldn't let us miss it for the world.

I've also got the big special edition of the new album preordered, and man I can't wait. The snippets of the album sound so good, and Luminol was insanely awesome.

Yeah, after seeing PT live for the last album stuff like this is an insta-buy for me, including concert tickets.

Yeah, I've caught PT live quite a bit. I'm actually present on the Arriving Somewhere DVD, and now Octane Twisted. I saw SW live at his solo show for Grace for Drowning, too, and that was amazing. It's not quite insta-buy for me just because I really dislike having to drive so far down to Chicago to see him. But I usually end up doing it anyway, lol.

Anyone pick up the new Riverside today? I really want to but I don't know if I can justify the cost on Amazon. For some reason it's $18.49 for the MP3 on Amazon. Seems a little extreme to me. Convince me, Prog GAF.

I've become pretty obsessed with Gazpacho lately. I heard Night and just had to keep listening to it over and over again. It's probably jumped into being one of my top discs ever in the first week I heard it. Ordered the CD from amazon after a day (was listening to it on Mog). I've been slowly getting more and more into their stuff after that (and a bit before that). Tick Tock is really amazing, too.

That's really extreme for pricing. The album's definitely great, though. It's probably the best they've done since Second Life Syndrome. I might put it as their 2nd best to their debut.

yea man the commercials are hilarious. they should use a girl that's prettier than Flow though...

Uh...

Oh, right, so I saw: Intervals, Russian Circles and Between The Buried And Me on Friday night. It was a wicked good show. I actually thought it was going to be Russian Circles and BTBAM. Not gonna lie, Russian Circles bored me. I thought Intervals was Russian Circles at first :lol. BTBAM rocked the house like usual though.

I loooove Gazpacho. Night and Tick Tock are both amazing. March of Ghosts was my album of the year last year. It's a little more "accessible" but it's still great. I was a little dissappointed with Missa Atropos but I also seem to be in the minority regarding that album. You should definitely pick up March of Ghosts after you've gone through Night and Tick Tock a hundred times or so. I think I could listen to "Winter Is Never" on repeat forever.

March of Ghosts was the only Gazpacho album I owned for a little bit. It came in at about 11th on my albums of the year list last year. I love it.

I had tried to get into them a while back with Missa Atropos and didn't really get into it. March of Ghosts clicked really late last year. Then last week I saw the Night Remaster, and yeah now everything seems to click, even Missa Atropos.

Bought three Steven Wilson Tickets for Essen (Germany) Yesterday. The new album is outstanding. "The Watchmaker" is one of best songs I have heard from him.

Want to hear the new Riverside too.

Watchmaker is pretty incredible, though with how great the rest of the song is, I kind of feel slighted by the ending. That's just nitpicking though.

Riverside's new album is very good. I think it's their best yet.
Recently, I discovered a band called Magic Pie. Fucking amazing. Some songs are like early Spockbeard and in others moments heavy like some DT songs. Love the vocals and backvocals.
Sunchild is pretty good stuff too. Didn't listen to everything yet.
Waiting for Haken new CD!
There's still a lot that I have to listen yet. I like prog bands with that jazzy feel in them, any recomendations?

Anyone got tickets for the upcoming Yes tour? They're playing The Yes Album, Close to the Edge and Going for the One. Line up is Howe, Squire, White, Geoff Downes (Asia, Buggles and former member of the Yes/Buggles line up of the early 80s) and their latest Jon Anderson soundalike, Jon Davison. I saw them on their last tour and they were pretty good.

I also have tickets to see Ian Anderson play Thick as a Brick 1 & 2 in April in Tokyo when I go there. Though I've seen youtube videos (and a recent Tull tour from a few years ago) and his voice is totally shot now so they hired a second singer to do most of the singing and also play the part of Gerald Bostock.

Yeah, the ending feels quite improper for me. And I just don't understand the lyrics besides "I'm still inside you". Hopefully the booklet will include them.

Nice! I saw them in 2012 and the concert was excellent. Well, I'm a Tullfan but it was really nice. The addition of the second singer for this is a good decision. Taab 1 has many hard parts for a Singer, at least too hard for Anderson to handle.

I feel like he kind of got Opeth syndrome with that song. Don't get me wrong, I love Opeth (probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite band ever), but Akerfeldt doesn't know how to end a song sometimes. Watchmaker feels kind of Opethian as a whole.

I'm sure he'll include lyrics. He usually does, though I suppose he didn't really on Insurgentes.

Giving the new Steven Wilson album a whirl now..

"The Raven That Refused To Sing (and other stories)"

As always, quality shit so far.

Fucking rocking the flute again...I love this shit.

Steven Wilson's really gotta stop putting out great stuff. He makes my end of the year album rankings seem like I don't even try and just give it to him by default. Or I guess I'm just that much of a fanboy for almost anything he puts out.

I'm finding it hard to think of anyone that can put something out to top Raven. It's possible that Devin Townsend can, but this project is a bit different for him, so we'll see.

Anyway, Raven is great. My only complaint is that I'm spoiled and want more! I'm so used to getting a bunch of bonus tracks and stuff like Insurgentes and Grace. Grace for Drowning was 2 discs on top of that, too. So quantity-wise this feels a bit less, but because of that it does feel a bit more focused. I got the deluxe edition, too, and the artbook is pretty great. One of his better ones (I've got all of them).

Also, he said in an interview he's likely going to put out an EP later this year for the tracks that didn't make it. The Birthday Party in particular has a big spot in the artbook, but it was cut from the album despite being a great track (according to him). He's also got 2 or 3 other solo works (recorded without the band) that he'll release with it.

Can't wait to see this performed live...

Saw him live with PT doing all of "The Incident" and it fucking blew me away...

I didn't know a new riverside was coming out. Will check out.

Ever heard the new Motorpsycho album, "The Death Defying Unicorn"?
Some jazz musician also contributes on this record and they even got a whole jazz orchestra, to mix Jazz and Classic with Progressive Rock. "The Hollow Lands" so far is already one of the best songs I ever heard. I wonder if the other stuff is just as good.

Crippled Black Phoenix also released a double album and the song "The Heart of Every Country" is already a damn fine song.

Gonna listen to the Steve Wilson album. I heard "Luminol" so far and it was really good.

You didn't see him doing Grace for Drowning? You missed out.

I've seen him a bunch of times, with PT and solo. I was there for the filming of Arriving Somewhere, and also Octane Twisted. GfD was amazing life. This stuff will be great, too. My wife's bugging me to buy the tickets, so I need to hop on that.

I was trying to figure out a way to see SW, Opeth, and Pain of Salvation... they all play kind of in the area within about a week or so of each other.

I didn't know a new riverside was coming out. Will check out.

It's pretty awesome. Their best since SLS, in my opinion.

Yeah, it's a little different from their last album but it's still excellent stuff. Also, the ridiculous pricing on Amazon has finally gone down.

I've also been listening non-stop to the Steven Wilson album. Really great album. I agree that it does seem a little short (even though it's normal length) just because of how much output he's released recently. I think my favorite track right now is "Drive Home" but "The Watchmaker" is starting to come on strong. I know what I'll be listening to on the car ride up to Albany this weekend.

Me, listening to the new Wilson: 'I knew Grace for Drowning, and you, sir, are no Grace for Drowning.'

It's good/great, for sure, but COME ON. GfD is a masterpiece.

Not sure he came around my area for that...or if he did I had something going on. =(

edit: Just checked, was nowhere near me...lol

Ah, that's always a bummer. I miss out on a lot of stuff too, because it seems no one wants to stop in Milwaukee anymore. I usually have to head down to Chicago to see a good band, but sometimes I can't make that work.

I would probably agree that overall GfD is better.

Anyone listen to Japanese Progressive bands? I don't have any pure progressive bands that I would recmmend but Recently I have been addicted to Owarikara which is this Funk/Math rock band that have a lot of prgressive elements

I think I need a little more time before I decide something like that. I find that most of Wilson's music is pretty good at first but there's always a point where it really kicks into overdrive for me. I liked GfD when I first start listening to it but there came a point where it became one of my favorite albums that he's worked on.

I like Raven a whole bunch right now and am hoping that I'll like it even more later.

I had this odd feeling about GfD that I rarely get with albums when I first hear them. A lot of albums take a little bit to really hit that hot point, like you're saying, but not GfD. A couple minutes into Deform to Form a Star I was just hit with an emotional overload and this overwhelming feeling that what I was listening to would be one of my favorite albums of all time. I realize that's kind of the beginning of the album, but for the most part that feeling kept up throughout.

I hear you. There were certain tracks like "Deform" and "Postcard" which were instantaneously amazing but other tracks like "Remainder the Black Dog" (which became probably my favorite track on the album) and "Raider II" that just took a little while to get it's grips into me.

I hear alot of what I liked from GfD on this new album and I just need to listen to it for awhile longer before making a judgement call. I've only had the album since Tuesday and had only heard Luminol a couple of times before getting the album.

Yeah, I'd agree with you on those same tracks, too. GfD was such a great combination for me at that time, though. I was getting heavily into older prog rock to an extent I never had before. I had got really into King Crimson at the time, too. So that half of the album was great and felt great to have SW's take on it. At the same time the album was interspersed with the more instantly good PT like tracks (Deform and Postcard). Really love the play on those styles.

Luminol, I think, is the one reason this album doesn't hit me quite as hard. It's an astoundingly good song, perhaps the best or even 2nd best on the album, but I heard it tons before the album came out. I was listening to a really well recorded bootleg for a long while, and then the live dvd/album came out with it on, so I listened to that, too. By the time I was able to listen to it on the album it was so familiar that it meant much less of the album was fresh and new. That's like 1/6 or more of the entire album play time right there!

I kind of think especially with an EP coming out later my opinion on Raven might closely parallel my opinion of FOABP. It's an amazing album when I'm listening to it, but it kind of gets lost because of the releases SW's had around it, and because it just had a bit less memorability because of less quantity. If the EP had been part of FOABP it would have been astoundingly high ranked for me, and I'm guessing this'll probably be similar. Another parallel I suppose is like what I said with Luminol. With FOABP I had been listening over and over to bootlegs of it played live. I like the studio version of Luminol just as much, though, unlike FOABP where I strongly prefer it live.

I can see that comparison working well. FOABP is another one that I agree probably could have used a bit more to it although I still enjoy it alot.

I have the bluray where FOABP was played in full and I don't enjoy as much as I do the studio version. In fact, I prefer the Arriving DVD more so than the FOABP even though some of my favorite songs like "Dark Matter" are on the latter.

FOABP to me is a live album. It shines live. The studio version he went a bit too much with the subdued, drugged sounding vocals. I get why he did it, but I don't think it worked as much as his vocals beforehand. The first bootleg I got of it (before the release) had such great vocal work. Parts of Anesthetize stuck in my ears way more than the studio. He sounded genuinely hurt and pained in My Ashes and Sentimental. The ending sort of cry for help vocals in My Ashes especially lost a lot in the studio version. Sleep Together was far more biting than in studio.

I'm sorry guys, I went back and listen to GfD...I personally like Raven better. I think the filler tracks detract from GfD while Raven every one is just so good...

GfD is still a great album but I'm enjoying this so much more.

Just saw this on Facebook:

NEWS: Steven Wilson Confirms Porcupine Tree to be On Hold

Steven Wilson has officially confirmed that his original band Porcupine Tree will remain on hold while he focuses on other projects. (...)

“But that’s not to say the band has broken up or anything like that. It’s always conceivable that we could get back together in a year or five years, or 10 years. I really can’t say – there are no plans at the moment.”

http://www.metalwani.com/2013/04/news-steven-wilson-confirms-porcupine.html

Saw Jethro Tull (well, Ian Anderson techincally) do his Thick as a Brick 1 and 2 tour in Tokyo a few days ago. Great show. The guy still has tons of energy. TAAB1 is a great album. Ian can't really sing anymore but at least he brought in the other guy with him to do much of the singing. I think they also cut out a skit from the regular performances because no one in the audience understands English (the one where Ian brings an audience member on stage to give him a prostate exam). Also, I wasn't sure if intro video, intermission video, the pictures they show on the screen behind them, etc were supposed to elaborate on the story of TAAB or just be random stuff because they were relatively useless. TAAB2 has its moments but is overall pretty inconsistent. I was bored throughout much of it.

Steve Hackett is coming to Tokyo in June. Gonna buy my ticket asap. Can't wait. I already saw the Genesis trio in 2007 and they were good.

I've recently discovered a duo called Buke and Gase. It's prog rock/post-punk underpinned with thoughtful pop melodies. They just released a new album in January, it's called 'General Dome'. They're fantastic.

Check out 'Houdini Crush' and 'Your Face Left Before You' on YouTube. Hope you like.

The trinity of Prog Rock is Pink Floyd, Dream Theater and Rush.
Pink Floyd is God (since it's the greatest band of all time), DT is the son and Rush is the holy spirit.

Other great prog rock bands are King Crimson, Yes, Spock's Beard and Genesis.

Saw Steven Wilson in Buffalo last night...was awesome. Played a 2 and a half our setlist.

I'm seeing him in May in Chicago. Can't wait. I'm really ecstatic that Marco is back on for the US part of the tour, too.

It's funny, I could accept Rush into a holy trinity of prog, mostly because they've been around so long and done so much. I like DT better than Rush, though, but having DT in some sort of holy prog rock trinity seems blasphemous in a way.

Any trinity needs King Crimson. They're not just a great prog rock band, they're the great prog rock band.

I can go over song highlights if you want or let it be a surprise for you...but a few songs really stood out as fucking amazing.

I'm sure the new songs are really amazing live. The whole album sounds like something that would translate well into a live setting.

Did they play the encore of Radioactive Toy and Ljudet Innan, or something else? That's the encore I want in Chicago. I guess they didn't do that in D.C.

I have to agree with you. You can't have a trinity of prog rock and not include KC in it.

If you were to have a a Prog Metal holy trinity then I could see including DT. Semantics, and labels, notwithstanding.

I've just recently started listening to Big Big Train. I picked up English Electric Part 1. Anyone else here listen to them? Heavily reminiscent of early Genesis. Really good stuff.
