Project Cars won't release on Wii U until 2015

I can imagine what actually happened:

- Wow, thanks Namco, for publishing our game! Here's the finished product, it's for Wii U, PS4, Xbox one and PC. We think it's going to be a blast on Wii U.

Namco: Yeah, right, about that. You know what, we have an idea. Let's not release on Wii U now. It's a shit of a console, nobody have it anyway. We should focus on superb next gen consoles. Everybody loves next gen consoles.

- But we worked so hard on Wii U version...

Namco: Ok ok, we release it, let's see. 2015. Late 2015. Is it ok by you?

- But...

Namco: Thank you, close the door on your way out!

Not surprising, even if dissapointed. Much more money to be made on xbone and ps4.

I will laugh my ass off if watch dogs on wii u is actually the definitive edition (minus the graphics). I beat the game on ps4 and it felt like a generic mess.
I loved the digital trips though

So, they'll be refunding all that money they took for a Wii U version then, right?

Sick of my console getting shat on for no good reason.

"Oh, the Wii U isn't selling because it doesn't have a large library, so we'll not release these finished games!".

Yeah! Let's not be THE ONLY RACING GAME ON THE CONSOLE! That's not a good idea!

*annoyed*

A properly mounted Wii U gamepad basically IS an F1 Racing Wheel

The screen on the Gamepad can even act as the speedometer, telemetry, or the track map.

This is basically what SMS is doing with Wii U version of the game. I think that is a significant advantage to consider, when you don't factor the graphical barrier between the Wii U and PC/PS4/XB1 versions.

While some of those features sound awesome, there is absolutely NO WAY I would play a racing sim by tilting a controller and using joysticks to accelerate/break. That sounds awful.

I've played numerous racing games using tilt and motion controls. Most are just serviceable enough to get through a race, and a lot are a swerve all over the place mess. I can see it working with every single assist on and almost arcade level control/gameplay. Full simulation settings would probably be horrid though.

I didn't know the Wii U lacked analog triggers. I plan on picking one up for Zelda (absolutely can't wait for that game), but I'd never play a racing sim with the current hardware offerings.

But WMD said this before Namco came in.

Project CARS will be launching on the following platforms starting November 2014...

This is disappointing. I was sure to buy this in November, but there's just so much coming out in 2015. Really let down by the crowd-funding model at work here. Wasn't greater transparency and respect for the fans the whole point? Meanwhile we hear the news from some international conglomerate who only just signed on to distribute the game. Shame on WMD.

They have literally no competition on the Wii U, and multi-console owners wouldn't have chosen the Wii U version anyway. I can't see this hurting the game at all.

Yes, I agree with you on that. It's not a situation like with Rayman Legends like some posters are already suggesting. Well, maybe if Nintendo themselves make a sim racing game, but that's highly unlikely.

That's a shame. I've been half expecting this for a while now. Not for any particular reason, but just due to cynicism since the Wii U can never catch a break, even when it does get 3rd party games.

I probably would have bought this in November, but in 2015 it'll be lower on the priority list.

Now, let's keep some sanity. It wouldn't have been close to 30% of that, but for sure will sell much less without marketing and being a late port.

"Well made" third party games sale well on Nintendo hardware despite the rhetoric that 3rd party games in general don't sale. I've observed this since the N64 era. Also, there are good reasons for why don't one that don't sale don't.

All of the third party games that weren't made unappealing, missing features or rife with development issues, true high quality games, have had decent enough sales. There have simply been only a few of them. If Wii U owners deem a game worth their money they will by it, and as I said, the Wii U version was winning in poles. People who owned a Wii U "wanted this game" alike a lot of the others.

And with the advent of Mario Kart 8, the console has been experiencing much higher weekly sales and is getting more recognition. Sales are going to go up in general now, though I can't say how much that matters for third parties now with the constantly still given owners of the console the short end of the stick. Third parties have made a bad reputation for themselves on the console and things like this delay are making it worse, not better.

I feel sorry for all of the people who funded this gaming expecting the PS3/360/Wii U version.

I'd love for Nintendo to call up BamDai and be like, " You know what? Fuck you too. Keep your game. We neither want it, nor need it. Enjoy your continuing slide into utter irrelevance. Do you eat shit? We don't. Bayo 2, bitches."

I'm still confused as to what this game is exactly.

Will this be a full $59.99 game with comparable content to Gran Turismo? Is there a retail release planned? Digital only?

Sorta, except gt leans more arcade than sim (as far as sim games go) while this is more sim than arcade. A better comparison would be iracing without the subscription model.

I don't think there is a 3rd party multiplatform (*edited*) game that sold over 500k on Wii U. Not even close, I think.

But Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed did sell quite well. MK8 is selling very well. So this is what I wonder, how does the love for kart racer transform into willing to buy a sim racer?

Yes sever relations to one of the only 3rd parties making games on Wii U and is helping developing smash. That will really help things out.

I think when you crowdfund a game, promising a specific version or platform, eventual sales don't matter. You're able to make the game based on the promise to those people. We shouldn't even been having a sales discussion here.

The discussion should be about crowdfunding, and the people backing projects. This isn't Ubisoft deciding to focus their own money on other platforms. This is a developer taking money from people expecting a Wii U versions and putting it into other platforms. Once not even announced when the crowdfunding was going.

"Hey, lets bring PCars to WiiU!"
"Look, the fans love it. They appreciate someone actually developes for their system!"
"Great! Lets develop for the other consoles too and give it to Wii U last!"
"Awesome idea!"

Niche game or not in a time period where there wasn't that many Wii U games how can a game sell this poorly?

No one knew about it. There was zero marketing.

This is bullshit though. Wii U was one of the first platforms announced for this with crowdfunding, and now it's getting put on the backburner. Then, when it sells even less than it would've if scheduled regularly, it'll be justification for the delay. What's even funnier is that on the two other platforms, they'll be going head to head with Forza and Driveclub, whereas there's no competition on the Wii U

Why did Nintendo fund it if they were not going to market it ?

They didn't market Pikmin 3 too much either. Actually once it was clear that 2013 was going to be a bad year for Wii U they decided to save some money from marketing and focus everything for Wii U just for holidays 2013.

Zombiu, Lego City Undercover and Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate did over 500k global.

I'm also certain that if Ubisoft had not delayed Rayman Legends, and released it in February(making it the game that would have ended the drought back then) that it would have oustsold ZombiU.

Though aside from the above listed games, their realy hasn't been a non-indie third party game released on the Wii U that was worth the money that was being charged for it. I was sure that Project C.A.R.S. would have been added to that list, but not anymore.

I would like to see a source for ZombiU (and it was anyhow exclusive release on Wii U). Lego City Undercover is a 1st party game practically and it was exclusive to Wii U and MH3U was console exclusive to Wii U.
This game is not an exclusive. So, anything multiplat even close to 500k?

People talk about 3rd party multiplatform games, you list 3rd party exclusives. Good stuff.

The question was 3rd party games, MH3 and ZombiU being exclusives don't exclude them from the list

Ok, if we discuss semantics, then good. I will edit the initial post. Any little bit of logic would have made it clear that this is about 3rd party multiplats, as those are the only one relevant in trying to estimate potential sales of Project CARS on Wii U.

Sega's Sonic-All-Stars Racing is the one I'd guess is closest, with its CONFIRMED at the time (May 2013) 310k sold on Wii U.

Yes, this might be the best multiplat and unfortunately it didn't have much more info the following SEGA reports, so we can assume it didn't sell much more than that.

There are sadly not many examples of WiiU third party releasing at the same time, price and port quality compared to other consoles. The few we have like Sonic Racing, the Lego games and Rayman Legends show that the userbase buys this games with some of those having their best-selling versions being on the WiiU.

Might just need more time to get the game performing like they want on Wii U. The huge power difference between Wii U and PS4/XB1 means the Wii U version has to be scaled down by a lot. The PS3 and 360 versions were dropped.
