Yes. It's PG-13, at least for its theatrical run.

how many decades now has 20th Century Fox sucked ass?
Everyone knows damn well Ridley Scott's preferred cut will not be PG-13. But hey- ASSES IN SEATS!
I want Prometheus to do well, but not at the expense of cutting the shit out of it. :(

I don't see how it is them 'sucking ass', if you can sell it to less people, you have to make it for less. They can always release an R cut at a later date this way, they can't release a higher budget version of the film had they done it the other way.

That's a nice suit you're wearing, Stu. :)

Now I will adjust my hipster glasses and raise the 'artistic integrity' flag!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe it is 'siding with the man', but it seems fair to me. If Scott only wanted $20M or something, he'd be able to put out whatever he wanted. The more he wants, the more compromises he has to live with. Given Scott's history of alternative/director's cuts, I imagine that's a situation he is completely happy with, as it will ultimately give him the creative freedom some point later on, and it gives him the production standards he wants.

What we should end up with, is a film with very high production standards, and uncompressed in content. The best of both worlds, we just have to wait a little longer.

That's very true, and something I hadn't really realized. I also got through the Anthology docs in the past month for the first time; the Prometheus interior does more closely match the style of Ron Cobb's detailed concepts than the final film Alien did.

Yep, very reminiscent of this:

well done, Stu. :}
...and yes, I agree about Fox Searchlight, Sculli. I still feel the company has severely mangled some fantastic franchises over the last 15-20 years, though. Fortunately there must be a changing of the guards somewhere in corporate, because X-Men, Alien, and Predator have all gotten redeemable 'new' entries recently, IMO. That is making the safe assumption that PROMETHEUS will be good.

Now back to Prometheus and the Weyland Industries viral site...
I wonder how much information right in front of us on the timeline is hinting at things even further to come (if these 'prequel-prequel' stories are correct regarding a follow-up to this film)?
I love all of the little things (patent for the power loader from ALIENS, creation of the 'Colonial Peacekeeping Force'. etc.), as well as elements that will clearly play a role in Prometheus (the David 7, the medpod)... but I wonder if something like the HELIADES (Weyland's first FTL space exploration vehicle) could have another bizarre mission that takes place prior to PROMETHEUS?

I just think they've created a fantastic fiction here that can be used in multiple films. I would also like for the main connection between PROMETHEUS and ALIEN to simply be that they exist in the same fiction (and the Space Jockey race in general) and not necessarily be direct 'sequel-prequel' material. I'd respect the shit out of that creative decision, to be honest. :)

My sole complaint is that if he had to compromise and do PG-13, he could at least have given us practical model effects rather than CG for the spaceship.

Eh. The practical sets are in the right spots. Interior alien planet/ship. Interior and spot exterior of Prometheus IMO.

I love practical ships, but they make little sense now when the rest of the shot is cg anyway

I like practical models, but only when static. Movement is practically always considerably 'off' in various respects.
I presume you mean for articulated elements of the model, rather than the entire thing being in movement?

I dunno. I actually think CG backgrounds to model effects is the perfect modern thing.

See: The Fountain

I was referring to the former, but I think the latter is frequently true also, that can be very well done, especially when the movement is slow. Large, slow tracking space ships etc, look great, but the faster stuff always looks off to me.

I can understand the preference for practical models but some of the stuff being done with the ships in the movie only make sense using CG.

Like this shot of the ship crashing into the derelict. The CG looks amazing.

watching Alien on Bluray recently and I was absolutely floored by the craft landing/taking off on LV-426. Even something simple like part of the landing gear and just crushing it under the weight of the craft. Practical model was great, felt real, fantastic lighting/smoke effects. Absolutely amazing what that design team pulled off.

Very true, I just watched it yesterday, very good. Blade Runner and 2001 also did it excellently, but I think people trip up when they attempt things a little more 'cutting'. In Aliens for example, at the end of act three when the ship is crashing around, bumping into the base as it's being blown up. Every time it moves, the illusion is pretty much broken for me.

Not to say it's not still good generally, it is, but I think CG is much better. At this point, I think it's fairly in the grasp of most filmmakers to have CG that doesn't date terribly too, something many have been wrestling with for many years.

Especially as they couldn't do the ship FX "properly" due to time/money constraints. The shots of the ship moving through space were accomplished by putting the model on a vehicle covered in black fabric and moving it against the background, using camera angles to hide this. You don't notice it at all while watching the film.

I also loved that Ridley Scott used his kids in wide shots to make the scale of the sets that much bigger. It was really effective, especially in the Space Jockey scene.

What's this from? I want to say I've seen it, but most of me just thinks it looks awesome.

Ron Cobb's concept art for the Nostromo in Alien.

Love the fact that this gives Ridley an opportunity to do all the cool stuff he wanted to do with Alien originally.

Look at these Ridleygrams from the original Alien. Gives you some idea of where he might be heading:

The Egg Silo:

Originally, The eggs were not inside the Derelict but in a pyramid type structure known as the 'Egg Silo'. The dead Space Jockey etches a triangle shape on a dashboard. The crew explore further and pick up on another structure. They climb the side of the structure to the top, once at the top, they enter a small room where they discover a hole that leads inside. Kane is then lowered down inside. This was designed by HR Giger and RidleyGramed but Budget Restrictions forced Ridley to abandon the scene and move the eggs inside the Derelict.

This is just speculation but this, the top of the silo from the original Alien:
could correspond to the top of the temple we see in Prometheus:
WDPUG.jpg

So the crew may make their way through the 'mouth' of the temple at some point in the movie.

Also, our crew finds a gaping hole in what is presumably the temple:

This corresponds with the Ridleygrams from earlier:

This just seems like a passion project for Ridley through and through. He must be enjoying the hell out it.

Has anyone claimed for the OT rights for this yet? I've not been this hyped for a movie for a long time and would love to make the OT if nobody else is desperate to do it.

So, this is the new Alien movie, huh?
Yes and no. The movie takes place in the Alien universe, thirty years before Alien, and contains "strands of Alien's DNA." It's a separate story. Don't expect to see chestbursters, facehuggers, and Sigourney Weaver running about.

Oh. What's the official synopsis then?
"A team of scientists journey through the universe on the spaceship "Prometheus" on a voyage to investigate Alien life forms. The team of scientists becomes stranded on an Alien world, and as they struggle to survive it becomes clear that the horrors they experience are not just a threat to themselves, but to all of mankind." Courtesy of IMDb.

It's a sci-fi horror sort of deal then? So it's been compromised to satisfy the censors?
Actually, no. That's right - Ridley Scott's Prometheus is officially Rated R! Expect "sci-fi violence", "intense images" and - most tantalising of all - "brief language."

Alright, well, how are we dealing with spoilers?
Delicately. Strictly speaking, anything in promotional material is fair game - so those on total blackout are advised to avoid the thread until they've seen the movie - but it still pays to be courteous to your fellow posters. Maybe don't rave about "Holy crap! Did you see that in the trailer? It means this and that and likely that and here's what someone on other forums has found from brightening the image!"

I think there are many that would like to do an OT. I'd say first in, best dress. Go and do it, but do it right and don't make it a mess of clutter. I did always prefer the practice of waiting till a month beforehand/when the first impressions hit.

Otherwise you'd have people making OT's for TDKR now and Lincoln now etc etc.

It is, unfortunately, one of those things that once you notice you can't not-notice.

The trend towards OTs being claimed months in advance is one of my biggest pet-peeves on this forum. I believe in a completely laissez-faire system. First one to post the thread is the thread creator.

It would be great if we could go with that system for Prometheus.

OTs should NEVER be posted more than a week out from release. That goes for games, movies, TV shows, whatever. And be to the fucking point. I want some quick info, not something that looks like the work of a studio plant.

Bingo.

I still remember that awful Inglourious Basterds OT with links you couldn't find in the collage. Lulz.

dude, you are the only person would make a lincoln ot right now.

I was curious and checked my thread creation history. 2 things surprised me. First, of some 40,000 posts I have (ugh), I've only created 85 threads. Second, I've only ever done 2 OTs.

- The Departed in 2006; and
- Spider-Man 3 in 2007

Looks like I was 7 days and 9 days before release. So I'm not too much of a hypocrite :P

This image makes me think of Alien where Ripley keeps them outside the airlock.

I wonder who is the character trying to be the broker in the middle and the one inside the cargo bay saying "You aren't bringing that shit on board"

So, uh, my (now partially Tinypic'd) Toy Story 3 |OT| is a good or bad example? You two seemed to like it at the time:

Now THAT, Plainview, is how you do an OP. I'm still partial to Rottenwatch than this whole OT business myself. But I like this thread already.

Predators and now Toy Story? Sam, you're stealing DP's thunder ;)

Edit: I am planning to update this one with reviews aplenty, before you nod to that.

I generally only do OTs for movies I'm really interested in. They're too much of a waste of time, otherwise.
