It is time

I feel bad knowing that I attended many Lasershows at Stone Mountain, with lots of Confederate flags waving while being too young to understand what was going on. I thought they were going to sandblast them off.

Rule of law. You can break the statue, but you accept there are consequences. If you're going to claim moral exceptions, then you can expect Trump and his ilk to do the same and you'd be very stupid to erode that barrier "because Confederate statues".

But WANTING them to suffer consequences is stupid.

Because we're better than them.

Because they're looking to tear down liberal lawful institutions so they can get their final solution going.
Compared to what they have done tearing down a statue makes us way way way way way way way way way better.

Why was it there in the first place?

"The south shall rise again"

Following the Civil War(and Lincoln's assassination), reconstruction efforts for the union were hindered when a series of fucking terrible presidents(Andrew Johnson being a biggie) fought hard to allow slavery sympathizing officials back into government roles with equal power immediately. (Johnson was almost impeached for trying to suppress and fire anyone that opposed him on this....sound familiar?)

But really, there was a huge debate about reconstruction taking time to ensure southern states rid themselves of their hateful ways before being allowed back into power roles. Some said fuck it, they're all good! An ongoing debate among historians(and comedians) is whether giving them a place at the table so soon pretty much allowed them to continue their racism, just with some guardrails. Pretty much ensuring that we are now all stuck living with it in begrudged compliance so many generations removed(yep!).

The war suppressed feelings, but didn't quash them. Generations kept going and the children inherited and nurtured it all. Monuments were erected for whatever bullshit excuses, and here we are.

(Feel free to correct/expand any of this by those that obviously know more than what I retain from my limited knowledge.)

Need to keep a eye out to see if anyone gets arrested for this. I will be the first to donate to their defense fund. Tear them all down.

Unless the statues have actual historic ties (as in, being constructed during the times they are representing - in which case the historic significance is more from a study on art and stone-masonry in American history), the only significant representation a side such as the confederacy deserves is a more abstract monument of shame. To argue whether fighting for the right to have slaves is right or wrong is grotesque, to honour the men who died for that ideal is to do a disservice for every single slave that suffered throughout history. Museums should by no means shy away of discussing - at length - as much of the Civil war as possible insofar as to educate, but statues are historically a symbol of admiration, which is something the confederacy has never deserved imo.

Tear the fuckers down.

A lot of these statues and other confederate symbols, such as those on state flags, were created decades or even an entire century after the Civil War as a fuck you to Black people fighting to be seen as equals.

The only historical significance that should be given to these things are the reasons why they were erected in the first place.

Hate. Not Heritage.

Funny and thing is that like 95% of the employees there are black hell the community it is black.

The only historical significance these statues hold is in their role of representing institutional racism in the south. That is their significance.

Great job being remembered for not only worshipping slavers, but also erecting statues for the sole purpose of subjugating the survivors.

At lease with Washington, Jefferson, etc, have accomplishments and contributions that go beyond fighting a war to maintain slavery.

Alt-right more outraged over the fall of a hate monument, than the murder rally. Good to see these core American values in full display.

Statues in public places are for celebrating history. Celebrating a heroic response in harsh times. This isn't history worth celebrating. There was a war about it.

I'm sure people who'll shed tears at its destruction can still find images of the statue online.

Motherfuckers on GAF 1950s would be in the "Rosa Park refuses to give up bus seat to White man in Alabama" thread saying "But there needs to be consequences for her actions."

The statue in Charlottesville was put up in 1924. I just looked it up. This statue was also put up in 1924.

By the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which is a neo-Confederate organization that's been around since the late 1800s. They're a bunch of "lost cause" supporting white supremacists that have worked in cooperation with the KKK since around 1915 or so. Lot of memorials to the Confederacy are tied to them, including the one at Stone Mountain that was posted on the last page.

Normally I would be saying that stuff like this should be preserved in museum so we can show future generations how big of dumb fucks people used to be, I am being optimistic, but fuck it. If the state is trying to block these fucking eyesores from being brought down then I support people doing it themselves. 100+ years of romanticizing treasonous pieces of shit is long enough.

Tear their fucking monuments down. I won't be satisfied until the last vestiges of erected Confederate statues on government/public grounds are found in porta potties made of their remains.

Statement by NC governor:

C'mon Roy

I mean, he's the sitting governor. He can't really give the a-ok for citizens to destroy the statues even if he's secretly grinning behind his desk. I'll admit when I first saw it I was disappointed too tho so who knows, maybe my optimism is misplaced.

I mean sure, if your legislature wasn't on the verge of passing a law allowing only straight white men from owning property and voting in the state, there may be a better way... But alas, you are governor of North Carolina and there is no better way

I agree with the Twitter comment that they should melt down the statue to make a new statue of the statue being torn down.

When a dog foams at the mouth and starts biting villagers do you scold it firmly and try to reason with it?
