That video was pure therapy.

These were the follow up session. So good.

Its heartening to see people genuinely care

The breakdown in communication between left and right is pretty final, so conflict seems inevitable.

I just hope things don't escalate much higher...

Most of them didn't exist in the immediate aftermath of the war. They were erected decades later. The statue in the OP was erected in 1924. Another reason the "historical artifacts belong in museums" line doesn't make any sense. These aren't pieces of the confederacy, they are the response of the racist descendants of the racist losers.

To use Mississippi as a weird example, our state flag while we were part of the Confederacy is the one that isn't racist, while the one we picked up afterwards is the racist one. That decision was intentional as a matter of spite.

Hopefully there will be some destruction of property and vandalism charges levied against the criminals responsible.

Know what I think about all the "go through the law" nonsense? The law is clearly on the side of the white supremacists, as we've seen through disproportionate reactions to certain movements over others.

These kids should be celebrated, not indicted.

Now to see if they replace/repair it. I know they will try

The law currently states that the statues cannot be removed or modified. Technically they should leave it on the lawn in the current state. I kinda hope someone sues to enforce it.

Oh god, the idea that they'd be forced to keep it broken on the ground is so hilarious.

I'm happy to see that the statues in Baltimore have gotten vandalized. They are way too big and solid for people to pull them down, but the city council voted to destroy them today. Good riddance, they should melt them down and put more inspiring ones in their place.

I say go for the crown jewels of Confederate statues until they finally admit unconditional surrender to the Union and put this shit in Museums.

Well, some people wanted a middle ground between talking to nazis and hitting them. Destroying their monuments seems like a good compromise.

And no one can cry about this cuz that would be siding with Goddamn Nazis.

Maybe this'll be an end to this state of losing and the South can actually truly rise instead of sink yet again...I hope...

This also means it will be used against us as well. I don't mind, but some people will be very upset.

"In memory of the boys who wore the gray"

Those boys who wore gray were traitorous slave owners who are currently burning in hell. How's that for a memory?

So. What is the current status of the Charlottesville Statue?

Can't be the only one thinking someone might try something one way or the other with it.

So many people I know saying, "This is detrimental to the cause", "We must rely on the government to tear these down, not the citizens", "We need a gentle hand".

It's like, how far do they have to get before you stop saying that shit?

I was just daydreaming to myself how sweet it would be if people just went ahead and tore these statues down and then I checked twitter to see the video of this. It made me so happy

Checking out the ones in my state of TN.
The Confederate Monument in Union City is first on my wish list of statue desecration.

It features this dedication:

To The Confederate Soldier of Obion County
Who Was Killed In Battle
Who Was Starved In Federal Prison
And Who Has Preserved Anglo-Saxon Civilization In The South

But "Heritage not hate" amirite? /s

In every thread no matter the action from the left there will be people telling them it's the wrong way.

Easier to sit on your ass and point and judge necessary action rather then roll up your sleeves and work with your fellow man to fight back evil, tooth and nail.

history will forget them anyway.

These people are heroes.

Basically don't do anything is what they say.

Let them be upset. Non violent Civil Disobedience including acts of Vandalism are very effective forms of protest and only harm the pride of others.

Good. Would not be opposed to seeing this happen more often all across the south.

I've been avoiding the internet generally since Friday because of this bullshit and because I live a few hours down Interstate 64 from Charlottesville and so, naturally, there's been a whole lot of bullshit in local media and their respective Facebook pages. I managed to glance upon one such thread late last night when checking my newsfeed and there was a heated discussion about "Lee's significance to the people of Virginia". I wrote this in response:

I am Virginia born and raised. I was fortunate enough to spend my childhood summers traveling to a multitude of historical sites including, but not limited to, Revolutionary War battlefields, Stratford Hall (Lee's birthplace and family home), the Museum of the Confederacy, and most Civil War battlefields north of Florida. My late father's decades long interest and research into history and family genealogy revealed that I have at least one confirmed direct relative who fought in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia as part of the 26th Virginia Infantry, Company F. On the topic of Lee's supposed significance to Virginians I feel VERY qualified to comment, and here's what I think:

Lee was a decorated general of the United States Army who turned traitor to fight against the very country who gave him the opportunity to become what he was. He did this because it was more important to him to maintain his "honor" as a southern gentleman than upholding his oath to "bear true allegiance to the United States of America, and [to] serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whatsoever, and observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States" [US Army Officer Oath, 1830-1862]. Preserving his southern honor was more important to him than fighting for the honor of ALL black Americans; In making his choice, no matter the reason, Lee attached himself to the southern cause of fighting to preserve the state's right to determine that black human beings were property rather than people.

Lee and his fellow Confederates, Generals and Privates alike (including my ancestor) deserve no reverence. No statues. No state holidays. No fanciful graveyard markers remembering "Our Confederate Dead". Their significance, not just to Virginians but to everyone in the United States, is to be consigned to the pages of history as an illustration that the United States does not tolerate seditionists and traitors, especially when their cause is to keep an entire race of people in bondage and slavery.

Removing monuments which should have never existed in the first place is not "erasing history" and the "heritage not hate" defense for their existence falls flat on its face when barely scratching under the surface of history illustrates the reasons for the Civil War were based entirely on ideals of supremacy and hatred wrapped up in pseudo-economic arguments.
